2010`Fall AAA REC (San Jose)

A/R-SJ Playoff Brackets

WED 11/24 (10:30PM) -- So by now we all know about the PHHS gym closure on 11/21 due to the power outage. All we can do is accept the cards that were dealt to us and try to move on. So, you can see that everything's pushed back one week, with the Championship on 12/19 (preceded by the Last Losers Bracket Game) and, if necessary, a Repeat Championship on 12/26.

In retrospect, because the A/R-SJ has 11 teams and is by that very nature a more complicated bracket, it would have been more beneficial to gym scheduling if I had not postponed A/R-SJ and postponed either AAA-SJ or 6FT-SJ instead. However, when the gym closure was reported to me, it was already too late. The gym schedule was not setup in a way where I could maneuver the chess pieces as far as best practices for league logistics. Typically in these situations, you want to try the all-or-nothing approach, so as not to stagger the remaining schedule and end up giving one team an advantage over another -- such as a Losers Bracket team that should normally be playing a doubleheader but due to gym closure, gets to split up its doubleheader. But I digress...

As of this writing, I'm not even sure a gym can be opened the day after Xmas, or even 1/2 (the day after New Years). So we just have to take it in stride and see what happens. At the same time, I've invited the highest remaining seed in the Winners Bracket, Thunderground, to partake in our "Superbowls" against A/R-SF or A/R-OAK at our annual SF Gold Rush Tourney on Dec 11-12, in which assuming they participated, they would have one tournament game already on 12/12. Well, I can't really move the tournament, so if they were to graciously accept, then assuming they survived in the Winners Bracket with only one league playoff game to play on 12/12, they'd actually have two games that day.

Thunderground has until Monday to decide, at which point I just go down the list and invite the next highest-ranked team. Incidentally all other A/R-SJ teams, alive or eliminated, are welcome to signup for the A/R division of the tournament.

So anyways, you can see we are running into some complications, but we'll deal with them as they come.

WED 11/17 (1:30PM) -- Latest and greatest for this Sun 11/21 is below. Remember that Sun 11/28 is Thanksgiving weekend and a league-wide bye. We pick right back up on 12/5. On Sat 12/11 and Sun 12/12 we have our Gold Rush tourney and I am thinking about having you play against equivalent teams from SF and OAK, maybe even somehow combine that with the tournament in case you wanted to play in the tournament too, but that idea is still in development as of this writing.

This is most unique early-round Losers Bracket I have ever done. First of all, please note that the goal is to reduce the Losers Bracket to two teams after this Sun 11/21, so that the two losers from the Winners Bracket can join them for a mini-Final-Four on 12/5, which will leave us with the requisite Final Three on 12/12.

We have 7 teams in the Losers Bracket and it was actually kinda complicated trying not to repeat the matchups that we already had in the first round (which would make things somewhat irrelevant this Sun 11/21 had we done so). So the 7 seeds that we had drop to the Losers Bracket were the bottom 7 seeds, starting with #5. Under normal circumstances we would have...
  • #6 vs #11,
  • #7 vs #10, and
  • #8 vs #9.
...but as previously mentioned, we just had these matchups. If we then goto the next high-low matchup, we would get #6 vs #10 instead of #11, but we would also get #7 vs #11 and #8 vs #9. Guess what, #8 vs #9 has already been played. So we are left with the only possible combination:
  • #6 vs #9,
  • #8 vs #10,
  • #7 vs #11.
And again, #5 Below The Rim is the highest seed right now in the LB so you could look at it as not having a #12 to play against in the LB this Sun, so they get to wait for the winner of a previous game. So here we have it...

A/R-SJ roadmap

Welcome to the 2010 Fall A/R-SJ division site. You may click on the SCHEDULE/SCORES, STANDINGS, or PLAYER STATS link in the lefthand navigation panel for the information from this division only.

You may also go back to the 2010 Fall weekly schedule. Please note that our new website is still undergoing migration from this old site. It will take a few more weeks.

Team Peter Su added, dropped

THU 10/14 (8:30AM) -- The A/R-SJ recently added teams Peter Su and Garage Kids, but then lost Peter Su. I had told Garage Kids that going from a 10-team to an 11-team schedule would be quite painful/impossible, so I asked around and the individual who was a scorekeeper with us the past few seasons said he would put his team in again. He committed to a slightly discounted team entry fee being at the last minute, plus working games as a scorekeeper again. Then, after the commitment which came last Wednesday, his team never showed up for their game on Sun 10/10 and despite repeated phone calls and emails, I have not heard from him since. For all I know, he got abducted by aliens.

Which means I now had to go from a 12-team schedule to an 11-team schedule. Now, I already mentioned that it was tough going from 10 to 11. Going from 12 to 11 was not as difficult, but it was still a lot of work. I had to force whomever was supposed to play Peter Su to be a bye, which means someone in the Eastern Conf will always take a bye each week. The Western Conference remains the same: 6 teams, play each other for 5 games, 6th game inter-conference against the East.

But to make it work for the East, I have installed a repeat-based-on-standings week for 10/31. Since the East has to take an extra bye each week, they are technically behind the West in games played. As such I've made the catchup date 10/31, so on Halloween the East will repeat while the West takes a bye. This should help out team Best Kept Secret.

Finally, this pushes the playoffs out to a Repeat Champ on 12/19, if there is one.

So anyways, next time a (reliable) team like Garage wants to join a 10-team field to make it 11, I have to remember to go from 10 to 12, then 12 to 11.

BYES: Byes are only allowable
under special circumstances.

If you have a bye later in the season
that is not a formally requested bye,
due to gym fluctuations and other
unforeseen circumstances, that bye is
not locked down; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled around
as necessary until you formally request
that week to be a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 7 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular
season games are usually encoded
as inter-conference or other
special type of matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week. But sometimes it
depends on if your opponent is
also stuck with a double-header.
