2010_Summer NL/AL (San Francisco/Oakland)

Last Updated 8/24 11:45PM

Welcome to the NL/AL division site. You may click on the SCHEDULE/SCORES, STANDINGS, or PLAYER STATS link in the lefthand navigation panel for the information from this division only.

You may also go back to the 2010 Summer season homepage for all of the league-wide information.

NL/AL playoff brackets

TUE 8/24 (11:45PM) -- Here's the latest and greatest. In the Losers Bracket we have a mini-final-four and because Hyphy has already played Good Sires, I will pit Hyphy against the next lowest-seeded team, which is Outkast. This is because having Hyphy vs Good Sires again, if it can be avoided and in this simple final-four structure it can, we would be repeating a game that was already played in the bracket, which would render the first game somewhat irrelevant. If there are other choices available and basically the situation is still pretty fair (to win a mini-final-four you still have to beat the winner from the other side), then we go with the other choice.

Hyphy and Outkast have both made 2 trips away out of 8. Meanwhile, the Eagles and Good Sires have not had an away game yet. Being that Outkast is still the only remaining Oakland team, mathematically everyone else will still have a higher probability of staying at home in SF. Also please bear in mind that logistically it's easier to put a mini-final-four bracket, as we have here with these four Losers Bracket teams, together in the same location. However, in this case it may still be possible to pull off an SF game for the Eagles vs Good Sires matchup. We'll just have to see as I iron out the schedule in the next 24 hours.

Again, I'm hoping we can have the Last Losers Bracket Game and Repeat Championship on 9/5. I will ask the surviving captains on Mon 8/30...

MON 8/16 (1:45PM) -- I have looked at the home/aways for the Outkast/Rangers/RedDevils triad and it is clearly evident that Outkast should get the homecourt. Therefore, the two games involving these three teams will be played in Oakland. The Rangers playing the winner of Outkast/Red must also occur in Oakland since we cannot predict if Outkast will win that one or not, so we have to plan that they might, plus it's easier to administer such a doubleheader in one location. Here are the games for 8/22...

p2-WB: #9 All Day (SF) at #5 Eagles
p2-WB: #3 Wildcatz at #2 Hyphy
p2a-LB: #8 Too Short at #7 Good Sires
p2b-LB: Winner-Too/Good at #1 Poordigies
p2a-LB: #10 Red Devils at #6 Outkast -- IN OAKLAND
p2b-LB: #4 Rangers at Winner-Red/Outk -- IN OAKLAND

MON 8/16 (12:30PM) -- We can now post the all-double-elim bracket for NL/AL...

In the Losers Bracket, we have 6 teams so we'll take the top 2 seeds and automatically advance them, meaning they will play the winners of the other four teams. The bottom four teams are #6, #7, #8 and #10. When scheduling, we take the best seed vs worst seed and have to assume that the seeds will hold. Therefore we take #6 vs #10 and #7 vs #8. The we assume that #6 and #7 will win, so we put #1 vs the winner of #7/#8 and #4 vs the winner of #6/#10. That means we will most likely have #1 vs #7 and #4 vs #6, which adheres to the high-vs-low-seed rule. It will be up to the lower seeds to break that expectation this Sun 8/22.

As for Outkast being the only Oakland team left and most likely at home (still working on this), that means the Rangers and Red Devils should expect to travel to BCRC for their "triad". Keep in mind that if either SF team wins (and eliminates Outkast), the rest of the road in the playoffs will be completely at SF.

Meanwhile, the Winners Bracket is pretty self-explanatory.

As far as beyond 8/29, we'll just have to play it by ear and check if the teams surviving up til then can play on the 9/5 Labor Day Weekend. Keep in mind that there's good and bad in everything. Many NL/AL players also play in either Vegas tournament on 9/12. One argument for playing on 9/5 is that there is consistency in playing instead of having a hiccup. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

NL/AL playoff matchups for 8/15

MON 8/9 (11:45PM) -- Remember, we have effectively split the first round due to the SF gym problems explained last week. So, here are our matchups for 8/15...

playoffs1: #5 Eagles at #4 Rangers
playoffs1b: #7 Good Sires at #2 Hyphy
playoffs1b: #9 All Day (SF) at #1 Poordigies
bye WB: #3 Wildcatz
bye LB: #6 Outkast, #8 Too Short, #10 Red Devils

I'll post the actual bracket next week. Please be reminded that all teams get double-elimination status, so as of right now everyone is still alive. We will seed the Losers Bracket by worst- vs best-seed, non-repeat.

NL/AL double-elim playoffs start 8/8

TUE 8/3 (11:15PM) -- Hyphy paid their forfeit and remaining fees, so they're back in. Here are the final seeds...
  1. Poordigies (5-1) -- won head-to-head vs Catz, won Western Conf
  2. Hyphy (4-2) -- won Eastern Conf
  3. Wildcatz (5-1) -- lost head-to-head vs Prdg
  4. Rangers (4-2)
  5. Eagles (3-3) -- tied common opp (2-2) vs Outk (Too/Red/Prdg/Rngr), 13.0 strength-of-victory
  6. Outkast (3-3) -- tied common opp (2-2) vs Eagl (Too/Red/Prdg/Rngr), 9.0 strength-of-victory
  7. Good Sires (2-4) -- won common opp (2-1) vs Too (Red/Rngr/Eagl)
  8. Too Short (2-4) -- won common opp (2-2) vs ADSF (Outk/Red/Hyph/Blzr), lost common opp (1-2) vs Good (Red/Rngr/Eagl)
  9. All Day (SF) (2-4) -- lost common opp (1-3) vs Too (Outk/Red/Hyph/Blzr), cannot finish higher than Too
  10. Red Devils (1-5)
Here are the interesting NFL wildcard tiebreaker analyses...
  • Hyphy gets the #2 seed over the Wildcatz despite having a worse record, due to winning the opposite conference, per old school NBA rules.
  • The Rangers would have lost any tiebreaker due to forfeiting a game, but a tiebreaker did not happen for them.
  • We reverted to the NFL's "strength-of-victory" tiebreaker, which Dream League interprets as point differential in games won.
  • There is a cap of 20 points in blowouts when calculating point differentials in Dream League.
  • The Eagles vs Outkast came down to strength-of-victory, since there were no head-to-heads and common opponents W-L were the same.
  • In the NFL, you determine the top team in your conference first, then compare outside of your conference.
  • As a result the Good Sires lucked out by edging Too Short, which edged All Day. Thus, a comparison of Good vs ADSF, which Good would've lost, was not needed.
Remember, with 6 regular season games done, we enter the playoffs this Sun 8/8 with all double-elimination status. The lower seeds will have to advance via doubleheaders in the first round.

The home/away balancing is also in full effect. Outkast has already traveled twice to SF, so they get the homecourt in the first round. Incidentally, expect them to get a lot of homecourts now that the Blazers, the only other remaining Oakland-based team, are expelled.

Here are the matchups for Sun 8/8...

playoffs1: #5 Eagles at #4 Rangers
playoffs1: #3 Wildcatz at #6 Outkast -- IN OAKLAND
playoffs1a: #10 Red Devils at #7 Good Sires -- 2-point decision last time out!
playoffs1b: Winner-Red/Good at #2 Hyphy
playoffs1a: #9 All Day (SF) at #8 Too Short
playoffs1b: Winner-ADSF/Too at #1 Poordigies

NL/AL season roadmap

FRI 7/30 (12:30PM) -- Pinned matchups for 8/1 based on standings. Remember that the Wildcatz and All Day (SF) wanted a bye on 8/1, so I was forced to match them up and play a doubleheader on 7/25. That's why we must skip those two teams when matching up for 8/1 based on standings, or as best as we can per current rankings.

FRI 7/23 (12:30PM) -- Updated the roadmap. Blazers have been put on indefinite suspension, which left us with 10 teams for the schedule on 7/25...

BYES: Byes are only allowable
under special circumstances.

If you have a bye later in the season
that is not a formally requested bye,
due to gym fluctuations and other
unforeseen circumstances, that bye is
not locked down; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled around
as necessary until you formally request
that week to be a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 7 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular
season games are usually encoded
as inter-conference or other
special type of matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week. But sometimes it
depends on if your opponent is
also stuck with a double-header.

TUE 6/29 (8:00AM) -- Blazers have reported that their homecourt can be SF, so we will make that adjustment, which should make the majority of SF teams happy.

TUE 6/22 (11:15AM) -- You know how the saying goes: seasons change. Last season, long-time NL franchises like Game Time won the championship and sailed off into the sunset. The East Bay Cardinals coach reported that it was getting harder to keep the core together, and the previous champion Wildcatz were losing some of their big men. Meanwhile, the upstart Hyphy squad showed flashes and gained a lot of experience in the relinquishing of the Winners Bracket stranglehold.

This season, the cornerstone players of Game Time sought out new challenges and reformed with MoneyTree to take on the eight-team Open division, which is now run by TripleDoubleSports. This new Open division, complete with pictures, video, and a DJ (Boogie Productions), also now features remnants of Dream League's old Open League participants as well as some new blood.

Back to the new "NL/AL", in no particular order, we have 11 teams comprised of who's left from last season's NL/AL-O and AL/AAA-E...

Poordigies -- offshoot of the AL champions led by Sean Caiola.
Rangers -- same as last season's AAA-E team but with a few additions, led by Mike Hicks.
Eagles -- same as last season's repeat AAA-E champion but slightly taller, led by James Aragon, Dennis Alaba, and Jordan Davis.
Wildcatz -- same as last season's NL team but slightly smaller, led by Ross Hiroshima and Alvin Lin.
Good Sires -- same as last season's AL/AAA-Open team but slightly bigger, led by Tye Phillips
All Day (SF) -- offshoot of previous All Day team, but mostly unknown as I haven't seen them yet
Outkast -- offshoot of Ballaz 4 Lyfe AL-O team from Oakland two seasons ago
Red Devils -- same as champion AL-O Red Devils team from 2 seasons ago, led by Jon Law and John Wihtol
Hyphy -- same as last season's runner-up NL/AL-O team except slightly bigger, led by a whole host of up-and-coming young talent like Rhodel Andres and Joerdan De Guzman, but also now anchored by Joe Santos in the middle.
Blazers -- similar to last season's team but perhaps with upgrades (haven't seen them yet)
Too Short -- same as last season's AAA-E regular season 1st place finisher, led by BJ Kang down low.

Because eleven is a rather odd number to have for a division, because any of these 11 teams can beat any other team on any given Sunday, and because some teams were slow to get off the ground, to finish the league up in time before the September Vegas tournaments, all 11 teams will get double-elimination status for the playoffs, but we will all play a 6-game regular season.

That means you still get the guaranteed 8 games played, minimum.

To make it easier to schedule, I have divided the 11 teams into two conferences, one with six teams and one with five teams. There are two teams from Oakland (Outkast and the Blazers). They are in the six-team conference. In the five-team conference, one team will take a bye each week.

I've actually grouped all the teams that were ready to start on 6/13, together in the five-team conference. The ones that weren't ready to start on 6/13 got grouped in the six-team conference. In essence, the six-team conference got out to a later start, but that evens out because one team always has to take a bye in the five-team conference.

The first four regular season games will be against in-conferences foes. The fifth game will be against the other conference and based on standings (top teams play each other). The sixth game will also be another standings-based cross-conference game.

There's a catch on those last two weeks. With an odd number of teams, we will require one team to do a doubleheader on one of those last two weeks, and sit one of those last two weeks. I have decided that the team playing the doubleheader will be the first-place team from the six-team conference.

We will not repeat any regular season matchups in the 5th and 6th games (it doesn't happen in the first four games, either).

The two Oakland teams will play at least the first four games at home in Oakland. That will result in two travel dates to Oakland for each of the other four SF-based teams in the six-team conference that the Oakland teams are in.

However, by the time we hit the 5th and 6th games, as well as playoffs afterwards, I'll make sure to balance out the home-away tallies.

In early August, we will hit the ground running with an 11-team double-elimination playoff tournament, with the low seeds (#6 thru #11) playing a doubleheader to advance in the first round of the Winners Bracket.
