2010_Summer AAA-6FT (San Jose)

Updated 8/25 12:45AM

Welcome to the 6FT-SJ division site. You may click on the SCHEDULE/SCORES, STANDINGS, or PLAYER STATS link in the lefthand navigation panel for the information from this division only.

You may also go back to the 2010 Summer season homepage for all of the league-wide information.

6FT-SJ playoff brackets

WED 8/25 (12:45AM) -- In the Lower Single-Elim Bracket, we are finally at our one-and-done Championship: Gotm vs Ath1ders...

...oops I just realized it says "Winners Bracket" in the middle of the above. Just a copy/paste error. Obviously it was just one single-elim bracket, no Winners or Losers Bracket as you would see in a double-elim format.

WED 8/25 (12:45AM) -- In the Losers Bracket of the Upper group, there are actually no changes to the structure and #3 will still face #4 because #2 and #5 dropped to join them and the highest seed continues to face the lowest seed. There's a mini-final-four such that we're left with only three teams after the battles this Sun 8/29 take place. Then, we will try to have the Final Three on 9/5 with a possible Repeat Championship on 9/12...

MON 8/16 (2:15PM) -- We have 8 teams in the Upper double-elim bracket and half of them lost on 8/22, so those will be in the Losers Bracket. The four that won remain in the Winners Bracket, obviously, and will play on 8/22, but the two teams that lose and drop to the LB as a result of 8/22 will then join the two remaining teams in the Losers Bracket for a mini-final-four that helps whittle the LB to the appropriate amount of teams as we near the end of the bracket.

We'll have to play it by ear in case any teams are going to Vegas 9/12, while scheduling the Last Losers Bracket Game, Championship, and potential Repeat Championship...

Here are the matchups for 8/22 (Upper Bracket only)...

Upper-p2-WB: #5 Running Rams at #1 GTL
Upper-p2-WB: #6 SikNTired at #2 Defense
Upper-p2-LB: #8 Fresh Coast at #3 In10City
Upper-p2-LB: #7 B-Team at #4 In It To Win It

The Lower Bracket is pretty straightforward and looks like this. We will definitely crown the 6FT-SJ Lower Bracket champion on 8/29...

Here are the matchups for 8/22 (Lower Bracket only)...

Lower-playoffs2: #5 Ath1ders at #1 Rhino
Lower-playoffs2: #6 Team Mata at #2 Gotm

6FT-SJ playoff seedings

TUE 8/10 (3:45PM) -- Remember, we are splitting up the 6FT-SJ into an all-double-elim Upper bracket and an all-single-elim Lower bracket. This may cause some problems in terms of scheduling, because the 17 teams were originally split for the regular season by morning and afternoon availability, but we'll make the best of it. Again, I think the competitiveness/parity is more important than the difficulty in tipoff timeframe conflicts.

There are exactly 8 teams that finished above .500 and will go into the double-elim Upper. The remaining 9 went under .500 and will go into the single-elim Lower...

UPPER BRACKET (DOUBLE-ELIMINATION)
  1. GTL (7-0)
  2. Defense (6-1) -- tied common opp (6-1) vs In10, won s-o-v (16.3) vs In10/IITW
  3. In10City (6-1) -- tied common opp (6-1) vs Def, lost s-o-v (14.2) vs Def, won s-o-v vs IITW
  4. In It To Win It (6-1) -- lost strength-of-victory (14.0) vs Def/In10
  5. Running Rams (5-2) -- no head-to-head/common vs SikN, won strength-of-victory (15.0) vs SikN
  6. SikNTired (5-2) -- no head-to-head/common vs RRam, lost strength-of-victory (9.2) vs RRam
  7. B-Team (4-3) -- no head-to-head/common vs FrCo, won strength-of-victory (16.5) vs FrCo
  8. Fresh Coast (4-3) -- no head-to-head/common vs B-Tm, lost strength-of-victory (8.0) vs B-Tm
We use the NFL's wildcard tiebreaker rules, which start with head-to-head matchups, then record against common opponents, then "strength-of-victory". We had many instances where there were no head-to-heads due to the morning/afternoon split, of which there were very rare common opponents as well, so we often resorted to strength-of-victory, which Dream League interprets as point differential in games won. We also cap blowouts at 20 points.

Incidentally, with four separate conferences (in the NBA, they're called "divisions" but we use "division" to describe our different levels of competition), under old-school NBA rules, we give the top four seeds to the winners of each conference. As it turns out, they're the top four teams anyways.

In the tiebreaker between the three 6-1 teams, we do what the NFL does. They determine the winner in a common grouping first, then compare across the group, when there is no combined head-to-head or common opponents from which to determine the top team out of three. With Defense and In10City in the same "group" we compare them first, then compare the winner of that tiebreaker directly with the team tied from the other group, then on down to the next team.

So we found that the Defense vs In10City tiebreaker came down to strength-of-victory, which Defense won. That leaves IITWI to be compared against Defense. IITWI loses the tiebreaker to Defense as a result of strength-of-victory once again, so that leaves the final comparison against In10City. There, IITWI barely loses the tiebreaker again, and so we have IITWI as the lowest 6-1 team.

Here are the seeds for the Lower Bracket...

LOWER BRACKET (SINGLE-ELIMINATION)
  1. Rhino (3-4) -- tied s-o-v (12.0) vs Gotm, won pt diff (+4.3) vs Gotm
  2. Gotm (3-4) -- won h2h vs Ath1, tied s-o-v (12.0) vs Rhin, lost pt diff (-0.6) vs Rhin
  3. Stop N Pop (2-5) -- won strength-of-victory (13.0) vs Rite, "won" Southwest Conf
  4. RiteNaow (2-5) -- won head-to-head vs Mata, lost s-o-v (8.0) vs Stop, "won" Pacific Conf
  5. Ath1ders (3-4) -- lost h2h vs Gotm, cannot finish higher than Gotm
  6. Team Mata (2-5) -- lost head-to-head vs Rite, cannot finish higher than Rite
  7. Young Money (1-6)
  8. Purist (0-6) -- won pt diff (-13.1) vs FnF
  9. F'n'F Warriors (0-7) -- lost pt diff (-19.9) vs Puri
To understand the Lower Bracket tiebreakers, you must read the Upper Bracket explanation above. Again, we go old-school NBA and give the top four seeds to the four "winners" of each conference. Here, they're not really winners so much as the under-.500 leaders. I still believe in the NBA rule because a team in an otherwise really strong conference could get victimized by the other strong teams in that conference, resulting in a worse overall W-L record. I'm sure there will be dissenters to this, but again I disagree especially when it involves conferences that potentially have never faced each other.

So, here's how things were determined. Rhino, Gotm, and Ath1ders all tied for the best record at 3-4. Per the NFL rules above, we start with the teams in the same conference: Gotm and Ath1ders. Gotm won the head-to-head there, so Ath1ders gets dropped to no better than Gotm, which in this case is no better than the 5th seed per the previous paragraph.

Now we'll compare Rhino with Gotm. Amazingly, both teams tied with the NFL's 3rd tiebreaker, strength-of-victory. So we go to yet another level, which Dream League has as straight point differential instead of just in games won. Rhino wins that comparison and therefore gets the #1 seed.

RiteNaow, Stop N Pop, and Team Mata are all tied at 2-5, so we first figure out the ones in the same conference and we find that Rite beat Mata head-to-head. Then we compare Stop to Rite and Stop has a better strength-of-victory.

Finally, with Purist and FnF stuck with 0.000 winning percentages, we check their point differential as well, since there's no victory to compare the strength of. Purist wins the point differential comparison.

Actually, I'm not sure we've ever had a situation where we compared a zero-win team and had a different number of losses! It's actually a moot point as we're talking about the #8 and #9 seeds, who play each other to advance anyways (winner plays #1).

As such, we'll have these matchups this Sun 8/15 in the opening round...

The decision: combine AM and PM for playoffs

WED 8/4 (1:15AM) -- In Dream League, often times I need to make decisions that make the majority of the masses happy, always resulting in at least a handful or more of dissent. Today, I'm making another one of those tough decisions.

I look at the standings and I see a lot of good cream-of-the-crop teams. But that's not who I'm most concerned about. Those teams will keep winning as it were. The teams that I'm most concerned about are the cellar dwellers. I want to make sure they have the best experience possible, too. And quite frankly, if you look at the 8-team AM/PM splits, I don't think any of those middle- to low-hanging teams have any chance against the more dominant teams in the AM or PM, specifically.

As such, I'm combining all the AM and PM teams that will finish below .500 (probably nine teams) into one playoffs, albeit single-elimination.

In doing so, this forces me to combine all the top AM and PM teams that finished above .500 in a massive 8-team double-elimination playoffs. But before you top teams start to complain about being grouped with other top teams, just remember: we've done it this way since Day One, anyways.

If we could go back in time and re-stratify all the teams, I'd create a 6FT-Elite and 6FT-Premier division and we'd separate the cream of the crop from the cellar dwellers. This is the one thing we can do in Dream League that cannot be done, unfortunately, in the NBA. Still, it would be cool to see the bottom teams in the NBA duke it out in a single-elimination consolation bracket, wouldn't it? Again, this reinforces my decision.

So that means the roadmap will get altered a bit, but I won't be updating it until next week. So, all the PM Southeast and Southwest Conference teams get a bye this Sun 8/8 as the AM teams finish out their 7-game regular season.

As I just emailed all the captains...
Doing so will present some tipoff timeframe/overlap challenges, but I think the COMPETITIVE aspects of my decision outweigh the LOGISTICAL aspects. That said, expect to play one or two hours outside your comfort zone, to make all this happen.

Doing so also will most likely force us into the championship on Labor Day Weekend 9/5 and possibly the week after 9/12, which also happens to be our Vegas tournament, although we usually don't have many SJ teams represented there, so I'm not too concerned about an overlap then.

I know that some of you may already have plans for Labor Day, but we will approach this playing it by ear. After all, by then, we should only have at most a handful of teams left.

Keep in mind, if you survive that deep into the playoffs, you will be expected to play on 9/12 if you are not already attending our Vegas tourney. But that is still many weeks away.

And finally, there will be no byes in the playoffs, unless by the slimmest of chances your opponent actually wants to take a bye along with you and make it up with a doubleheader -- assuming it is mathematically possible -- the following week. In short, don't go anywhere if you want to advance in the playoffs!
Of course, this is all subject to avoiding the proverbial wrench coming in from left field. But this is the plan, so far.

6FT-SJ season roadmap

WED 7/21 (8:00AM) -- Looks like the Purist/Gotm matchup on 7/25 needs to be nixed so that we end up with Gotm having 7 regular season games like everyone else, and Purist having only 6 games since they are the odd-team-out and they signed up last. So, they will get a pro-rated refund. The roadmap below has been updated.

TUE 6/22 (10:00PM) -- We've had our first roadmap modification. Stop N Pop wanted to play this Sun 6/27 instead of take the bye, so in doing that, we restore their IITW vs Stop game to 6/27 but now we move IITW vs Rhino to 8/1. That way, IITW is never forced to do a doubleheader.

TUE 6/22 (4:30PM) -- We have another massive 17-team 6FT-SJ. However, I decided to segregate it into a "pm" group and an "am" group. The morning group has 9 teams, the afternoon-evening group has 8.

With a 7-game regular season, if you have an odd number of teams such as the "am" group with 9, one of the teams can only play 6 games. This team will be Purist, which joined the season late. They will receive a pro-rated refund at the end of the season. The good news for them is, they only need to go 3-3 instead of 4-3 to qualify for double-elimination status in the playoffs.

The big question is, what do we do for the playoffs? Because what we'll have is about half the teams from each "pm" and "am" finish above .500 and half below .500.

The whole premise for going with pm vs am was that it was just way too complicated to schedule a team that normally wants 5pm or later against a team that wants 1p or earlier. What I'll do is, at the end of the regular season (due to Purist only having 6 regular season games, both the "pm" and the "am" end on the same week even though the "am" has 9 teams compared to 8), I'll look at both scenarios and if the scheduling is just too much of a headache, I'll keep "pm" segregated from "am" even in the playoffs.

In other words, we'll kind of do the playoffs by ear, and it will be strictly logistics-based -- just so you know for sure that I play no favorites (in fact, I don't get down to SJ that much, so I wouldn't even know whom to favor even if I *did* want to favor someone!).

BYES: Byes are only allowable
under special circumstances.

If you have a bye later in the season
that is not a formally requested bye,
due to gym fluctuations and other
unforeseen circumstances, that bye is
not locked down; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled around
as necessary until you formally request
that week to be a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 7 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 1 or 2 of 7 regular
season games are usually encoded
as inter-conference or other
special type of matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week. But sometimes it
depends on if your opponent is
also stuck with a double-header.
