AAA-North Upper Playoff Brackets
AAA-North Lower Playoff Brackets
AAA-North playoffs underway: Upper, Lower

MON 4/13 (7:15PM) -- Without further adieu, let's dig into the playoff seedings. The Upper division consists of all the teams that finished .500 or above and therefore earned double-elim playoff status. There are 11 such teams. With Sickwidit Crew joining the rec-oak playoffs, that means we have 6 teams remaining to play in the Lower single-elim bracket.

Each Upper and Lower bracket has its own championship t-shirts because had we had a crystal ball to predict how teams would do, we would've cut the 17-18 teams into two divisions anyways. Running gigantic divisions is not something I like to do, since the parity isn't quite always there (you could have the 1st place team end up playing against the 18th, 17th, and 16th, who knows). It's much easier to manage the playoffs of a smaller group. Plus, bigger groups tend to drag the playoffs on, as the 11-team bracket will show.

Here's the Upper Bracket. Remember, in the NBA where they have 3 divisions per conference (dreamleague uses reverse terminology: we have 3 conferences in the the AAA-N "division"), they take the top 4 teams according to record and seed accordingly, however, our 3 conference champions MUST be in the top four seeds...

1. Colossal (8-0) -- best record, won Eastern Conference
2. Neighbors Next Door (7-1) -- won Northwest Conference
3. Bombers (6-2)
4. Crusaders (5-3) -- won Southwest Conf, tied 1-1 head-to-head vs BSqA, 4-0 common opp vs BSqA (Puri/Mopd/SFFD/Fire)
5. Squadron (5-3) -- won head-to-head vs CKs, 2-0 common opp vs BSqA (ACI/Crus)
6. Bomb Squad AAA (5-3) -- tied 1-1 head-to-head vs Crus, 2-2 common opp vs Crus (Puri/Mopd/SFFD/Fire) so cannot finish higher than Crus, 1-2 common opp vs Sqdr (ACI/Crus), 2-0 common opp vs CKs (ACI/BOC), won head-to-head vs BOC
7. BOC (5-3) -- lost head-to-head vs BSqA so cannot finish higher than BSqA, won head-to-head vs CKs
8. Cereal Killers (5-3) -- lost head-to-head vs Sqdr so cannot finish higher than Sqdr, 2-1 common opp vs BSqA (ACI/BOC), lost head-to-head vs BOC so cannot finish higher than BOC
9. Rebels (4-4) -- no head-to-head vs Mopd, tied 1-1 common opp vs Mopd (Puri/Colo), 13.67 strength-of-victory vs Mopd
10. Mopeds (4-4) -- SFFD fft tiebreaker, no head-to-head vs Rebs, tied 1-1 common opp vs Rebs (Puri/Colo), 8.25 strength-of-victory vs Rebs
11. SFFD (4-4) -- Forfeited regular season game 4/5 so they forfeit all tiebreakers

The tiebreakers are all pretty self-explanatory. Due to the rash of forfeits on 4/5 and in general this season, I decided to use that as a tiebreaker, which hurt SFFD's seeding but certainly made it easier for me to figure things out.

In the NFL, when they figure out wildcard race tiebreakers, they first determine the tiebreaker between teams that are within the same group. That determines which teams simply cannot finish higher than other teams. Then they look at region-by-region if you will. So that's how you figure out which teams to compare in the first place. For example, if you see Squadron and Cereal Killers tied in one conference, while Crusaders and Bomb Squad are tied in the other, and all of these are tied with each other, the NFL says you must first figure out if the Cereal Killers are dominated by Squadron and if Bomb Squad is dominated by the Crusaders. Then you go cross-conference after comparing the teams that "won each region tied at that spot", so to speak.

The only really interesting tiebreaker went to the Rebels over Mopeds on strength-of-victory. In the NFL wildcard race, this is the tiebreaker that comes after no resolution on head-to-head and common opponents. The NFL purposely keeps "strength-of-victory" somewhat vague, so dreamleague has always adapted the definition of point differential in games won for this. I think it makes sense because you are comparing yet another set of parameters against as many samples as available. For example, if you take straight point differential head-to-head or against common opponents, I think that's not a broad enough sample.

In the Lower Bracket, here's what we got...

1. Asian Community Influence (3-5) -- no head-to-head vs Puri, 1-1 common opp vs Puri (Rebs/BSqA)
2. Purist Knights (3-5) -- 2-0 head-to-head vs Fire, 0-2 common opp vs ACI (Rebs/BSqA)
3. Fireballerz (3-5) -- 0-2 head-to-head vs Puri (cannot finish higher than Puri)
4. Full Tilt (2-6) -- won head-to-head vs Indoballers
5. Indoballers (2-6) -- lost head-to-head vs Full Tilt
6. FR (1-7)

If you read the explanation on NFL tiebreakers above for Upper, then you can figure out how ACI finished ahead of Purist which finished ahead of Fireballerz. Interesting for the Full Tilt vs Indoballers tiebreaker, Full Tilt beat the Indoballers 55-54 during the regular season. But alas, that tiebreaker really doesn't matter as #4 plays #5 in the first round! In this case, it may be better to be considered the underdog, pyschologically speaking. Otherwise there's no real difference in finishing 4th or 5th in a 6-team bracket.

WED 4/8 (10:00AM) -- Final standings thru 4/5. I'll talk about tiebreakers and the separate Upper and Lower brackets shortly. Meanwhile, the matchups for first round playoffs are up, see roadmap below. See Playoff Brackets links in righthand table.

WED 4/1 (2:15AM) -- See update below pertaining to FR... TUE 3/31 (8:45PM) -- Here are the scores from 3/29...

aaa-n: boc 53, full tilt 52 -- Looks like my pre-season prediction that Full Tilt could hang in AAA-P and not AAA-REC was incorrect. That's my bad. They will definitely have the option of moving back to AAA-REC if they want, although I still don't think there's much to prove in that division, albeit I'm not sure they've won those championship t-shirts. In my mind, it's just a t-shirt though. They move the ball around well and they shoot well. Maybe not this season, though. I haven't seen too much of BOC yet, but they have double-elim status so they're in good shape.

aaa-n: cereal killers 43, aci 38 -- Big middle-of-the-pack game. Now ACI must win on 4/5 vs (gulp) Bomb Squad, not an easy chore.

aaa-n: colossal 49, squadron 44 -- I'm not sure what to make of this. Colossal dominated until a run in the end by Squadron. Does that mean Squadron should've played better from the outside or Colossal can't close out games? I don't know. Anyways, Colossal is looking great and the main reason why is that there's nobody else in AAA-N who is as athletic as Chris Yost.

aaa-n: crusaders 50, bomb squad aaa 37 -- Wow, the Crusaders are now 5-2, so either they picked up someone from when I know them way back, they are finally gelling and playing up to potential, or all of the above. I'm not sure if Bomb Squad had all their guys or what-not but a 13-point win over Bomb Squad is quite impressive.

aaa-n: Indoballers 59, FR 33 -- Depending on the numbers, I might also move FR along with Sickwidit Crew to the REC division for playoffs. I'll worry about this next week. I have determined that we'll need FR to stay in the Lower Bracket. Yes, I know FR lost here to the Indos by 26, but they also beat Sickwidit by 10 in an extremely low-scoring game (i.e., 30-something to 20-something is a wider margin than 110-100). Also, the rec-oak is more ready to accept another team in the playoffs than the rec-sf, which is where FR would go. Assuming FR stays here in the Lower Bracket, they'd probably be the #7 seed out of 7 teams that didn't make it to the double-elim Upper with .500-or-better records. So FR would end up playing a high seed that would probably have a 3-5 record, one-and-done for all in the Lower.

aaa-n: neighbors next door 70, TL Bombers 65 -- I know that NND is a strong team with solid players (who ought to be playing in AAA-E!), so the fact that TLB only lost by 5 is a good sign for TLB.

aaa-n: Purist Knights 71, Fireballerz 40 -- No idea how Fireballerz lost by 30 here. They've beaten some quality teams this season. The Purist Knights are a clear-cut favorite to win the single-elim Lower Bracket consisting of all teams under-.500.

aaa-n: sffd 60, mopeds 52 -- Even though the Mopeds lost, they still clinched double-elim status with 4 wins previously. SFFD's in good shape.

aaa-n: rebels 2, sickwidit crew 0 (fft) -- Scheduling issues here. Rebels need 1 more win to clinch double-elim status. They are certainly of that caliber, they just need better organization and people to show up. Sometimes you get lucky and play in a division that's a little bit weaker and qualify for the playoffs (happens in the NBA every season). The Rebels are that team, but then again if all their players are present they are legitimate championship contenders.

So here are the matchups for 4/5 based on standings, but the fact that we had to match Mopeds with Colossal means that some of the teams underneath Colossal are actually maybe playing a slightly tougher equivalent team from the Mopeds' conference. There is no other way to do it. Also, see roadmap below...

inter3: Colossal at Mopeds (ALREADY HAPPENED ON 2/1)
inter3: Crusaders vs Squadron
inter3: SFFD vs Cereal Killers
inter3: Bomb Squad AAA vs Asian Community Influence
inter3: Rebels at Purist Knights @ RWC
inter3: Fireballerz vs Sickwidit Crew
inter3: bye: entire Northwest Conf, Colossal, Mopeds

...We're having gym issues on 4/5 so I'll have to figure out final homecourts for 4/5 soon. Once things go back to normal in the playoffs, I will remember who was at home for 4/5 and even it up as best as I can.

TUE 3/24 (12:30PM) -- I'll post info about 3/29 later. I need to get all the other standings up before 1pm today.

TUE 3/17 (12:45PM) -- No recaps from 3/15 yet. No outlook beyond 3/22 yet.

TUE 3/10 (9:30AM) -- Outlook past 3/8...

aaa-n: bombers 65, indoballers 49 -- The Indoballers are now 1 loss away from being shut out of double-elim status for the playoffs. But their next 3 games are all based on standings and therefore winnable.

aaa-n: cereal killers 64, aci 37 -- The Cereal Killers now need just 1 more win to clinch double-elim status. Certainly do-able since the next 3 games are based on standings.

aaa-n: crusaders 49, purist knights 46 -- The Crusaders just clinched double-elim status and maybe these dreamleague veterans are finally poised for a championship run in the playoffs. The Purish Knights must now win out to clinch double-elim status and it's certainly do-able with 3 straight games based on standings.

aaa-n: fireballerz 58, sffd 53 -- Like the Purist Knights I just discussed above, the Fireballerz need to win out to clinch double-elim status. With the scheduling change described in the roadmap, they'll have a bye on 3/15 first before they embark on the 3-game set to close out the season.

aaa-n: mopeds 67, bomb squad aaa 49 -- Both teams are in good position to clinch double-elim status. The Mopeds get a chance to clinch versus the reeling SFFD on 3/15.

aaa-n: rebels 45, squadron 35 -- Squadron needs just 1 more win in the next 3 games to clinch double-elim status. The Rebels are way better than their record indicates, as they started the season with a patchwork lineup. Their being currently ranked 4th in their own conference with Sickwidit as the 5th is the very reason why I have switched around the schedule for 3/15 -- see roadmap.

AAA-North season roadmap

TUE 3/31 (9:00PM) -- Matchups for 4/5 determined based on standings.

WED 3/11 (8:00PM) -- Had to change up matchups for 3/15 due to tipoff conflicts.

TUE 3/10 (9:30AM) -- This Sun 3/15 was supposed to be an intra-repeat week, but with Sickwidit Crew not really even belonging in the AAA-N, I didn't think it was fair to have the wolf-in-sheep-clothing Rebels go up against them with only 2 more wins for the Rebels needed to clinch double-elim status. So I swapped 3/29 and 3/15, which allows FR (0-5) to face Sickwidit (0-5). In fact, I think the Indoballers (1-4) now have it rough with the Rebels (2-3), based on standings, since the Rebels lost earlier in convincing fashion to ACI (also 2-3). This also means the entire Southwest Conference, except for the Mopeds vs SFFD makeup game, has a bye now on 3/15. I am unlikely to change this strategy because, like I requested earlier in the season, no one "locked" the byes down for 3/29 or 3/15.

TUE 3/3 (12:30PM) -- Locked 3/22 bye for ACI/Eastern... SAT 2/28 (8:45AM) -- Realized and moved 1/25 Mpds/SFFD to 3/29...

BYES: If you have a bye later in
the season that is not a formally
requested bye, due to gym
fluctuations and other unforeseen
circumstances, that bye is not
locked down
; that week's block
of games can still be shuffled
around as necessary until you
formally request that week to be
a bye for your team.

GROUND RULES:
1. Please make sure the number of
red rows (games moved from) equals
the number of green rows (games
moved to).
2. Make sure you have 6 regular
season games listed with your
team name.
3. The last 2 of 8 regular season
games are usually encoded as inter-
conference or other special type of
matchup.
4. The playoffs are pretty much
nailed down, barring unforeseen
circumstances (i.e., no byes!)
5. Any special late bye requests at
this point will require permission
from other teams to shuffle them
around.
6. Special late bye requests can
*usually* be accommodated if your
team plays a double-header some
other week.
