NL Playoff Brackets (FINAL)

5 Wins, 6 Losses = Championship!

JANUARY 30, 2008 (8:00PM) -- MoneyTree became the first dreamleague team in recent memory -- probably EVER -- to win a double-elimination playoff bracket with an overall losing record, beating Game Time this past Sunday by 5 points. The victory also prevented a four-peat by Game Time. More details and team photo forthcoming. More details to follow as we catch up on stats, scores, and recaps.

Matchups for 1/27 posted

JANUARY 23, 2008 (9:30AM) -- Looks like EJ still has my PHRC binder and the one with all the stats from last week, so I can't update the bulk of the scores from either 1/13 or 1/20 yet. Matchups for 1/27 have been posted on the Bird's Eye page.

Weak sauce running rampant (UPDATED)

JANUARY 23, 2008 (9:30AM) -- UPDATE: The Bay Function captain chimed in to say that he felt Greg Hom wasn't a ringer in the sense that he's played 3 regular season games, but my point was that Hom, who can hit treys and drive to the basket at will, probably shouldn't be playing in the REC. However, this is probably Hom's first season in the league, so he wouldn't have really cared which division he played in.

Incidentally, if anyone objects to being called "weak sauce", by all means email me and I'm happy to post your rebuttal... More info

#1 Kidz and #2 UIS sent to Losers Bracket

JANUARY 15, 2008 (8:00AM) -- Playoff brackets have been posted at the above link and you can tell who plays who next on 1/20. The Losers Bracket games will be doubleheaders for the survivors and probably at Sequoia. More to follow in the next couple days.

Recaps from 1/6, Susanto leads Game Time

JANUARY 12, 2008 (8:00AM) -- Here are quickie recaps from 1/6...

GmTm d. Hot: Locked up at halftime 41-39 in favor of GmTm, then after the break Yih-Wei Chien got an and-one and Johnny Liu hit a trey, followed by 6 Hotshot turnovers in the 3rd and that was the difference. Chris Mendoza was getting the ball stolen while trying to make post moves and surprisingly Joel Sales Jr. and Vince Encelan got a little careless with the ball. Maybe due to fatigue as Hot only had 5 guys while GmTm had 6. Angelo Munagorri only got 2 shots off in 2nd half after scoring 8 pts in 1st half. Encelan went a quiet 6-for-8 from downtown for 20 pts. When not turning it over, Mendoza went 10-for-14 down low for 15 pts, with 5 ast but only 4 reb and 9 turnovers. GmTm got hot again: Ryan Susanto 31 pts including 5-for-5 to start the game, total 11-for-15 on a variety of midrange shots plus 5-for-8 downtown which means his only 2 missed shots were inside in the arc. Chien 13 pts 8 reb, Liu 21 pts... Catz d. Tree: Greg Walder 14 pts 7 reb 3 blk. Sunny Margate playing on bad ankles yet still leads team with 17 pts 15 reb 2 blk, Gene Cleghorn 16 pts... Kidz d. UIS: Kidz 11-for-13 1st qtr to take early 26-7 lead. Steve Chang 17 pts, Josh Tsutsui 16 pts. Karl Gusner 36 pts (27 of them in 2nd half) to try and make up for absences of scorers Vince Chooi and Glenn Perseveranda

Delivery of remaining t-shirts

JANUARY 11, 2008 (2:30PM) -- Happy Friday! First off, my plan is still to do some recaps from last week's playoff games. Now, most of the t-shirts have already been distributed. If your team has not received your t-shirts, please email me to arrange my drop-off of them next Thursday. I plan to get in my car as early as someone will see me, go burn some ozone layer, and drop off your t-shirts to wherever you are, be it at home, at work, or eatin' lunch somewhere. Get this thing off my plate, you know.

So first thing you gotta do is make sure your team is supposed to get t-shirts by double-checking the Payment Registry. Players or roster slots listed in bold mean they have already received them (and then some, meaning some of the not-bolded ones have also received them already). Then email me your situation. I will make sure my records don't indicate that we already gave them to someone at your team before some game in the past several weeks. If everything checks out, then I will reply to get your address of where you will be and I'll see you Thursday. CAVEAT: I will not be able to drive to San Jose; only Oakland or SF.

Playoffs start 1/13; UIS, Hot, Kidz pay 1 slot

JANUARY 10, 2008 (8:00AM) -- Tipoffs for 1/13 have been posted. Click on the Bird's Eye link above.

JANUARY 8, 2008 (4:30PM) -- First off, don't forget: Up In Smoke, the Hotshots, and the SJ Kidz still need to pay for their 8th roster slot as we head into the 8th game of the season, which is the first round of playoffs. If your team is planning to carry more than 8 into the playoffs, you will need to pay for that 9th slot. The 10th slot is at a greater-than-50% discount in case you need to go in with a bigger roster.

The playoff field has been set and you can find the seedings on the STANDINGS/TEAMS page (lefthand nav column) and the matchups on the Bird's Eye page. The games are basically structured as such: the #6 seed plays the #3 seed and the winner plays the #2 seed whereby all games are on the homecourt of the #2 seed, and the #5 seed plays the #4 seed and the winner plays the #1 seed whereby all games are on the homecourt of the #1 seed. The two winners of the #3 thru #6 seeds will obviously play a doubleheader. If this was not the case, then we would have had to force the #1 and #2 seeds to wait another week to play.

As far as homecourt this week, it just turned out in favor of the high seeds this week. Normally, it's difficult as it is to ask the SJ teams to travel further than they already do to Sequoia. My goal this season is to make the mileage as fair as I can.

That means at any given point from here on out, while you may own the higher seed, you might still travel to the home of the lower seed. During playoffs in previous seasons, we did not pay any attention to mileage over the course of the whole season, but we do now. Opening your travel outside a 15-mile radius of your home ensures a better chance to play against similar high-quality teams. That's the trade-off of dreamleague and what makes our league different. At the same time, you still should have ended up with more than 50% of all your games at your specified home.

Superbowl Sunday 2/3 scheduling

JANUARY 3, 2008 (8:00AM) -- Check your Season Schedule article. If your team gets far into the playoffs, chances are you will need to play on Superbowl Sunday 2/3. On that day, the Superbowl will kickoff around 6pm. That means our last tipoff would be at 4pm. Please do not schedule any festivities prior to Superbowl kickoff on 2/3 -- if you are going to party, plan to do so afterwards.

The only way I will avoid scheduling on 2/3 is if I can utilize 2/10 without any more games mathematically possible after 2/10, i.e., 2/10 is the drop-dead date to get everything done.

Last regular season games on 1/6

JANUARY 1, 2008 (5:00PM) -- HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!! The 7-game regular season will come to an end after this Sun 1/6. All teams will get double-elimination status in the playoffs, but seeds #3 thru #6 will have a play-in game for the right to play against #1 and #2. One of the top two seeds is still up for grabs between the Kidz and Wildcatz. I haven't yet decided if the #1 and #2 teams will start next week 1/13, which if they do, means a doubleheader for the winners of #3 thru #6. Be prepared for the worst, esp. if you are also playing in another division (where there could be doubleheaders!).

I also haven't yet decided how to determine homecourt, as my goal is to make the traveling even across the board for all teams, but if all things were equal, then this weekend's winner between the Kidz and Up In Smoke would theoretically win homecourt for the time being.

The Kidz, Up In Smoke, and Hotshots all need to pay for at least 1 more spot before tipoff. The 8th roster slot is due before tipoff on 1/13 and will again be subject to $1 per week late fees.

Teams need to be fully paid before playoffs

DECEMBER 13, 2007 (7:00PM) -- The Payment Registry (link is above) has been updated and the following NL teams need to get fully paid by tipoff of 1/6: Hotshots, Up In Smoke, and SJ Kidz (all 2 slots paid each before 1/6 tipoff).

Remember, there are 7 regular season games, but each team needs 8 roster slots paid for. Playoffs will be double-elimination for all teams, thereby guaranteeing at least 9 games played.

I will not begin scheduling the playoffs if an unreasonable amount of teams are not fully paid (do not risk pushing back the NL even further because Superbowl is 2/3 and I plan to skip 2/17 NBA All-Star Weekend). If you're the only team that hasn't paid, then we will proceed forward without you and have no choice but to count your game as a forfeit.

Next games on 1/6, playoffs start 1/13

DECEMBER 11, 2007 (7:00PM) -- A poll of captains earlier this week has led to postponement of the previously scheduled games for 12/16 to 1/6, as 12/30 was requested to be an official holiday and on 12/16, members of MoneyTree, the Wildcatz, and Up In Smoke will be representing Dream League Bay Area in the Gotham Games in NYC (well, Princeton, NJ to be exact)... More info

The Season Schedule article has been updated with this new development.

Swishes & Bricks from 11/18

DECEMBER 11, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Just got done with the 3rd annual Gold Rush James E. Love Memorial Tournament this past weekend. Thanks to all the NL and AL players that played (too many to list here), plus the guys on AAA's Ballin', Poorcats, Ryusei, Bomb Squad, Lions, and Trybe. Bay Area Select, South Bay Shootout, Super Bad, the Warriors, and even the champion Delano Renegades had a player or two or three from dreamleague Bay Area leagues make at least a cameo appearance. About half the teams paid us a visit from out of town or outside the usual leagues.

The Payment Registry will be updated later this week and I sure hope all the teams approaching playoffs this Sunday 12/16 are paid up in full. While I get the scores from 12/2 and requests for 12/16 up, please enjoy Vinsanity's latest Swishes & Bricks from way back on 11/18. I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving was hardly the time to catch up with work (I tried and so did Vinsanity, but just couldn't get it done). That holiday was more like a time to catch up with family. Hopefully during the December holidays we'll have more easy-going days to catchup on dreamleague scores and stats. Without further adieu, here's Swishes & Bricks from 11/18... More info

No games this Sun 12/9 due to Gold Rush

DECEMBER 4, 2007 (8:00AM) -- There are no games this weekend due to our annual Gold Rush tournament (good luck Up In Smoke, Dream League Bay Area team, and Hotshots). Payment registry will be updated again early next week and the schedule for Sun 12/16 will go up as usual by Thu 12/12. Any tipoff requests for 12/16 should be emailed in ASAP. Scores from 12/2 will be up soon as well as Vinsanity's Swishes & Bricks from 11/18.

UPDATE ON T-SHIRTS: Remember, t-shirts are given out to players who paid early and via online so as to save us the hassle of collection and going to the bank. Most of the t-shirts have now been passed out (at PHRC on 11/18 and IJRC on 12/2). If your team has not received its t-shirts, know that we will try to coordinate logistics for 12/16 and so forth until all t-shirts owed are passed out. If somehow you can pick them up at commish's garage too, that would be preferred, as I'll be out of town on 12/16 and logistics will be difficult (although I'll try my best to have my staff come through).

NL schedule pushed back due to Fairfield

NOVEMBER 28, 2007 (11:00AM) -- I just updated the Season Schedule article (see link near the bottom of the righthand table) and would like to note these things...
  1. Wildcatz vs MoneyTree needs to be rescheduled away from 12/16 due to half of MoneyTree representing dreamleague at the NYC Gotham Games tourney (wish them luck!). I've already contacted the Wildcatz captain to find a solution (Thursday night sometime between now and 1/6)?

  2. Regarding 12/30, there's a realistic possibility that Up In Smoke could win the West and the Wildcatz the South. These two teams are the ones that have voted down 12/30. So if they finish #1 and #2 and no other team objects to playing on 12/30, then theoretically we could get #3 thru #6 started on 12/30 if Wildcatz and UIS finish atop their divisions.

  3. If 12/30 is a wash, then I might need to impose a doubleheader on the #3 thru #6 teams in the first round (1/6).
NOVEMBER 28, 2007 (10:00AM) -- Due to many teams affected by the Fairfield tourney, we will push back the NL one week. Since next week is Gold Rush tourney, that means the end of the regular season will occur on 12/16. However, there's one glitch in that MoneyTree has 3 players going to the New York tourney on 12/16, so we may have to schedule the remaining Wildcatz vs MoneyTree game for a weeknight.

Thus far, two captains have voted down playing on 12/30. That means the playoffs would start on 1/6. That also means the remaining Wildcatz vs MoneyTree game merely needs to get done sometime between now and 1/6. I'll be in contact with those captains. Meanwhile, the other 4 teams should expect to get done on 12/16, barring unforeseen circumstances.

We could also play some makeup games on 12/8 or 12/9, during or after the Gold Rush tourney, because we do have a lot of gym space that weekend (probably more-so on late 12/9).

Swishes & Bricks from 11/11

NOVEMBER 24, 2007 (10:00AM) -- In this edition of Vinsanity's Swishes & Bricks, Jay Pattugalan probably (?) set a dreamleague record with 12, yes TWELVE, three-pointers made in a game, and this: "Among the dazzling performances of the weekend, some teams simply stunk it up shooting-wise. And I'm talking about not being able to buy a basket, period."... More info

Mullin, McHale and Ainge (and t-shirts)

NOVEMBER 21, 2007 (4:30PM) -- Today the Golden State Warriors take on the Boston Celtics -- what a way to enjoy our Thanksgiving break! Many, many years ago (twenty?) the Warriors visited the Celtics as they always have. Except on that night, there were three players who would eventually shape the very league that they play in from an executive level... More info

Btw, we started passing out t-shirts last Sunday at PHRC, SQHM, and SQHX. We will be at BCRC and IJRC on 12/2 and hopefully you'll get yours. Any issues, email me. And if you want to come by my house anytime to pick them up over here 2 blocks from PHRC, that would probably be the best way to ensure receipt of your t-shirts.

Happy Thanksgiving: no games on 11/25

NOVEMBER 20, 2007 (10:30AM) -- There are no games scheduled for 11/25. Have a happy Thanksgiving weekend. On 12/2, we're back at it (PLEASE SEND IN TIPOFF REQUESTS FOR 12/2 ASAP). Then on 12/9, there's another leaguewide bye due to the annual Gold Rush Tourney.

ALL ROSTER SLOTS MUST BE PAID BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS START. If not, then it makes no sense for me to schedule you in. Case in point for the Perpetrators of the AAA-Elite, who have not returned my phone call after 2 straight forfeits. They are on the hook for the remaining 3 roster slots, as well as the $50 forfeit fee unless their opponents in those forfeits are willing to waive the fee and shrug off the $25 each.

IF YOU GO INTO THE PLAYOFFS WITH 9 PLAYERS, ALL 9 PLAYERS MUST BE PAID. Only players who have played 3 regular season games are eligible for the playoffs and they must occupy a roster slot, of course. All players who play for you in the playoffs must occupy a paid roster slot, with a minimum of 8 roster slots paid per team. The rosters are set and cannot change once the playoffs start.

THE PAYMENT REGISTRY WILL BE UPDATED LATER THIS WEEK. I still do not which team to allocate the roster slot payment for...
  • Inigo Palileo (RWC)
  • Suryo Senduk (OAK/SF)
  • Christopher Romero (OAK/SF)
The teams of these players are all at risk of becoming delinquent on their payments. 411, please. And for those of you who have not finalized your payments, please put your team name on the memo line of your personal check or put your team name somewhere in your order with Google Checkout.

Auto-forfeit warnings for 11/18

NOVEMBER 16, 2007 (5:30PM) -- Check the Payment Registry link. The following teams are at risk of auto-forfeiting this Sun 11/18...
  • Hotshots: 5 slots paid, 6th game on 11/18
  • SJ Kidz: 5 slots paid, 6th game on 11/18
  • Up In Smoke: 5 slots paid, 6th game on 11/18
Roster slot payments are now up to $90 for SF/OAK and $95 for RWC.

Tipoffs for 11/18 posted

NOVEMBER 15, 2007 (12:00PM) -- Well, tipoffs are almost posted. The Wildcatz won't know that time at or after 5:30pm they play until later today. I am trying to schedule the AL-E after that so as not to affect Mike Reding, but the whole thing relies on AL-E RReb (and to a small extent, REC-S RFOB) -- see Bird's eye page.

Payment registry has also been updated. Auto-forfeit warnings will be posted tomorrow.

Let's take a quick look at some of the games from last week...

Wildcatz 77, Game Time 68: Wildcatz scored 27 points in the 1st quarter, with Reding scoring 10 of his eventual 26...He was ultimately 4-for-10 from beyond the arc...Game Time only had 5 guys, with oldies Tom Chen and Ken Wan forced into the starting lineup in the absence of Michael Kraus, Johnny Liu due to being out of town, and Keith Wang, who is likely to miss much of the season due to the pending arrival of a new baby...Another good game for Ryan Susanto: 34 monster points, 6-for-6 from FT...Wan had game-high 11 rebounds...SJ Kidz 85, Hotshots 76: Hotshots without frontmen Ryan Cruz and Joe Santos, who had his appendix taken out earlier in the week...Tim Tully led with 26 points, 13 rebounds, on 10-for-18 from the field...4 Kidz in double-figures...Angelo whats-his-last-name of Hotshots scored 29 points on 11-for-14 shooting from outside, 5-for-8 beyond the arc...Up In Smoke 71, MoneyTree 69: MoneyTree played small ball and nearly pulled it off...Dan Matsumura led MoneyTree with 18 points...Vince Chooi with 19 points, all on treys...Ross Lim with 15-and-10, making first 7 shots from field...Most interesting stat has to be Sean Caiola with only 9 points, but 7 assists, yet they only lost by 2...You would've thought he'd have to hit at least 20 for MTP to have a chance.

Matchups (but not tipoffs) for 11/18 posted

NOVEMBER 14, 2007 (8:00PM) -- Check the Bird's Eye link above. More info to follow on Thu and Fri about matchups. Payment Registry to be updated Thu night.

Swishes & Bricks from 11/4

NOVEMBER 13, 2007 (5:00PM) -- Matchups might not get posted until late Wednesday because it looks like we lost a scoresheet binder and the shotclock laptop got stolen (our 2nd laptop that has met the same fate). If anyone has a cheap old laptop we can use and maybe buy from you, please let me know. The laptop must have at least Windows 2000 and a USB port. Also, if anyone has an old laptop bag too. Meanwhile, enjoy Vinsanity's latest Swishes & Bricks from 11/4... More info

Tipoffs for 11/11 posted

NOVEMBER 9, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Payment Registry page has been fixed and updated. The following teams are at risk of auto-forfeiting this Sunday 11/11...
  • Hotshots: 4 slots paid, 5th game on 11/11
  • SJ Kidz: 4 slots paid, 5th game on 11/11
  • Up In Smoke: 4 slots paid, 5th game on 11/11
Roster slots are now up to $89 for SF/Oak and $94 for RWC. Refs and scorekeepers have been instructed to accept only a minimum of $89 or $94 per roster slot and they do not carry any change.

NOVEMBER 7, 2007 (6:30PM) -- I love looking at standings and with MoneyTree's monumental blow-out upset of Game Time, it really looks like this season's NL is more up for grabs than in recent memory. Barry Lee and Sean Caiola apparently ran circles up and down the court. The Wildcatz beat the SJ Kidz on a buzzer-beater (I think) from Ross Hiroshima. And Mark Scates had 7 blocked shots to totally annihilate the Hotshots' imported frontline help of Ryan Cruz and Joe Santos. Vince Encelan was a DNP and it appears he will need to be at every game from here on out for the Hotshots. The Southern Conference is up for grabs and MoneyTree is hoping for speedy ankle recoveries for BOTH Sunny Margate and John Parsons. Good thing for them, everyone in this 7-game regular season gets double-elim status for the playoffs.

Swishes & Bricks from 10/28

NOVEMBER 7, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Check the Season Schedule article on the righthand table for matchups for 11/11. More to follow on that tomorrow should your division's schedule have quirks. Also, we're experiencing some problems with Google Docs, so the Payment Registry page will not be updated for a few days, but you'll know on Thursday night or Friday midday which teams are subject to auto-forfeits on 11/11.

Meanwhile, here's Vinsanity's latest installment regarding 10/28 stats (keep in mind NL had a leaguewide bye on 10/28)... More info

Auto-forfeits for 11/4

NOVEMBER 1, 2007 (5:00PM) -- Before each of their tipoffs this Sunday 11/4, the Hotshots and Up In Smoke each need to pay for 1 spot (3 slots paid, 4th game on 11/4).

Tipoffs for 11/4 posted

NOVEMBER 1, 2007 (5:00PM) -- So I managed to put the Hotshots vs UIS game back in Oakland, as suggested in the Season Schedule article posted way back when. Hotshots are living by their namesake. Hopefully they can get another big man because how are they gonna keep UIS's Dan Gusner and long-limbed Ross Lim (rhymes!) off the boards?

Back in the Bay, MTP asked for a game prior to its brethen AL-E Prodigies, but that just was not do-able due to scheduling issues, namely Game Time captain Ken Wan gettin' back 'cross the Bay from commish's AAA-V game. It's a repeat matchup of the first meeting in which John Parsons helped MTP take a lead into the 4th quarter, only to see it evaporate in what's becoming a trademark Game Time comeback. Will Parsons even be healthy from his ankle sprain this time around?

Finally another rematch with the SJ Kidz and Wildcatz. In the first meeting, the Wildcatz were manhandled with Mike Reding showing up late, Gary Chern not available, and none of the Catz 3 shooting guards there. Hopefully this time they'll have bodies to stop Lance Mune and Josh Tsutsui from outside. Good battle down low with Tim Tully and Greg Walder. When is Steve Chang gonna bust out for 30?

NOVEMBER 1, 2007 (2:00PM) -- Check the Bird's Eye link above. I'm gonna go eat some lunch now, so I'll be back later with some more tidbits about the difficulties of scheduling the 11/4 tipoffs, as well as some other stuff.

Swishes & the BRICK: ONLINE WAIVERS!!!

OCTOBER 31, 2007 (4:30PM) -- Matchups (but not tipoffs) for 11/4 posted on Bird's Eye page and Payment Registry updated (see links above). Also, Inigo Palileo, Suryo Senduk, and Wayne Bendebel need to email me so I know where to allocate their roster slot payment to. Not only did they fail to specify on the Google Checkout payment, but also they did not submit an ONLINE WAIVER, so I am unable to look them up in our player registration database to find out which team they're on.

While personally doing some online stats the other day, I noticed that dozens of you still have not filled out our ONLINE WAIVER, which serves many purposes. Not having you in our database to email you about our upcoming leagues and tourneys? Hey, I'm in over my head as it is, so no big loss, I can live with that. Playing on one of our courts without waiving your rights? OK, you'd be a fool to sue dreamleague and shut everything down for everybody else, so that one doesn't bother me as much either.

But not being able to look up your name to input your friggin' stats?! Bugger.

Please note, this is mainly for our newer players with whom we literally have no clue your full name or team because someone on your team botched your scoresheet one week. If you've never seen our ONLINE WAIVER page, then yeah you probably haven't ever filled one out, so go do it now. You can ignore the auto-generated error message -- haven't had time to fix that. First name, last name, team name, phone, address, email, click Submit. Simple.

So we're just gonna skip you if we can't find your name in the database. And we have to enter a whole team at once, so if we skip you, we skip your whole team. And once we skip your team, hell no, we ain't going back.

On another note, please enjoy Vinsanity's Swishes & Bricks from 10/21... More info

NL leaguewide bye 10/28

OCTOBER 24, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Due to an out-of-town tournament, we will take a league-wide bye this Sunday 10/28. Good luck to the East Bay Cardinals and Dream League All-Stars!

Code of conduct for spectators

OCTOBER 24, 2007 (8:00AM) -- In light of incidents involving spectators for at least the past two weeks, all spectators will now be expected to sign a waiver of liability form upon entry into any of our gyms. As has been dreamleague policy heretofore, spectators fall under the supervision of the teams they represent. Spectators will be ejected for any altercations they are involved in, whether they started it or not (like a double-technical). The teams they represent may be fined or suspended as well. You will be guilty by association. Therefore, eradicate your volatile spectators immediately, or else you are putting your own team at risk. You have been forewarned.

IF YOU ARE SPECTATOR, DO NOT TALK TO ANOTHER TEAM'S SPECTATORS. DO NOT TALK TO ANOTHER TEAM'S PLAYERS. DO NOT SAY ANYTHING DIRECTED AT THE OTHER TEAM'S PLAYERS OR THE OTHER TEAM IN GENERAL. DOING SO WILL PUT YOU AT RISK OF BEING EJECTED FROM THE GYM, AND YOUR TEAM OF BEING SUSPENDED.

Players banned for fighting

OCTOBER 24, 2007 (3:00PM) -- The paragraph below has been updated to reflect available information. There are claims that the Frosh Tryouts spectator may have instigated with a physical motion, which would suggest an element of self-defense on the part of Flores and Clayton. Also, the issues of suspensions are moving towards a reconciliatory path, which means all parties seem to understand what kind of environment dreamleague would like to promote. More informational updates will follow here if necessary.

OCTOBER 24, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Dexter Flores and Benjamin Clayton of the AAA-P SloJams have been banned indefinitely from dreamleague for entering the stands and fighting an opposing spectator. Flores's two sisters have also been banned indefinitely. The spectator representing SloJams' opponent, Frosh Tryouts, is suspended and cannot attend anymore dreamleague games for the rest of this season. SloJams may not replace Flores or Clayton on their roster for the remainder of this season.

I find it very disappointing that people still resort to violence to solve their problems, no matter how much verbal abuse you have taken. If you are one of these people who have even the remotest chance of crossing the line into physicality, who cannot walk away from a verbal attack, do us all a favor and don't play in dreamleague anymore. Don't come and watch our games. Don't visit this website. This is not the place for you.

For those of you who instigate with verbal attacks, it will not be tolerated AT ALL anymore. Anyone who instigates by verbal means will automatically be ejected, be it a player or spectator. The same goes for anyone who retaliates, even by verbal means. PLAYERS AND SPECTATORS WHO ARE EJECTED FROM THE PREMISES FOR THESE REASONS WILL RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC 1-GAME SUSPENSION, more if the league office deems necessary. If you don't like these rules, then please do not play in dreamleague.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE SITUATIONS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS. WE HAVE REFEREES AND GYM DIRECTORS WHO ARE FULLY QUALIFIED TO DIFFUSE CONFLICTS. OVERSTEPPING THIS AUTHORITY WILL LEAD TO EJECTION FROM DREAMLEAGUE.

Swishes & Bricks from 10/14

OCTOBER 22, 2007 (5:30PM) -- Dear Loyal Readers, yes, I'm talking to all of you, whoever you may be: captains, players, rabid fans, groupies (wait, do we even have groupies?). Please take the time to make sure roster lineups are filled in correctly. I can't stress how important this is to many of us here at Dream League HQ. To clarify -- by correctly, we mean a couple of things... More info

Tipoffs for 10/21, Risking auto-forfeits

OCTOBER 19, 2007 (8:00AM) -- See Bird's Eye link for 10/21 tipoffs. Scores from 10/14 have been entered.

So it goes like this: I call your ref before tipoff. If you haven't paid the scorekeeper what you owe by then, the ref proceeds to forfeit your game. So if you need to, bring your checkbook in case your teammate flakes. I don't care who pays your spots, but someone on your team's gotta pay 'em. The following teams are at risk of auto-forfeiting this Sunday...
  • SJ Kidz: 2 spots paid, 3rd game on 10/21, pay at least $91 before tipoff
  • Hotshots: 2 spots paid, 3rd game on 10/21, pay at least $91 before tipoff
  • Wildcatz: 2 spots paid, 3rd game on 10/21, pay at least $91 before tipoff
  • Up In Smoke: 2 spots paid, 3rd game on 10/21, pay at least $86 before tipoff
And don't forget, it's $91 for RWC teams and $86 for SF/OAK. Nothing more, nothing less (we have no change at the table). Next week, it goes up to $92 and $87.

Swishes & Bricks from 10/7

OCTOBER 16, 2007 (9:00PM) -- Going over the numbers from 9/30, I felt like I was in stathead heaven. Ballers dropping 30+ with ease, shooting ungodly percentages, ripping down boards like madmen and dropping dimes left and right...I guess you can say that this was a down week for the league. But that's not to say there weren't any bursts of brilliant play... More info

Late fees and auto-forfeits kick in soon

OCTOBER 15, 2007 (8:00PM) -- The payment registry (see link above) has been updated and now that most every team in the league has played two games and had a month to pay their roster slots ahead of time, the payment button will be updated within the next 24 hours with a $1 per roster slot per week late fee. Btw, t-shirts will then be ordered and any payments with late fees (or payments not made online) will obviously not get a free t-shirt. T-shirt orders are made to exact numbers from our payment registry.

Remember, any payments made by cash or check do not yield a free t-shirt because the whole point is to drive all payments online to minimize the work on my part after the fact. Also, if you are going to bring cash to a game, you must give it to a scorekeeper and have him/her write it down on your scoresheet. We do not give change at games, nor am I fond of keeping track of partial payments, so no payments except the exact amount will be accepted. Any partial payments will either be rejected or still incur late fees until paid in full.

All captains are expected to check the Payment Registry to see if their team is updated. Currently there are three players who have not stated what team they're on, nor have they submitted an ONLINE WAIVER (link is in the green part of the vertical navigation bar to the left) as we've instructed, so basically we do not know who these people are. Even though we are catching up on stats, we will NOT be publishing any stats for people who do not submit an up-to-date ONLINE WAIVER. Because of the risks posed to our gym directors, we reserve the right to kick any player out of the gym if they have not submitted an ONLINE WAIVER.

FAIR WARNING: from now on, if you don't have as many roster slots paid as the number of games played including the upcoming Sunday, your team will automatically forfeit unless the required payments are made before tipoff. This will be your only warning. I predict at least one or two teams will screw up in this regard. Prove me wrong.

Bay Area = mini-Milwaukee?

OCTOBER 13, 2007 (8:00AM) -- While Milwaukee introduces itself to Yi Jianlian, we ought to do the same here in the Bay, at Cal to be exact. Enter Max Zhang, who made a cameo appearance at an Asian tourney last year that we wrote about... More info

Update on suspensions

OCTOBER 11, 2007 (12:00PM) -- Just wanted to update everyone to basically say that I think a more positive spin should have come out initially below. Hopefully this update will make up for that. Although players will be suspended, Trybe and Kurruption are perhaps two of the senior teams in dreamleague who really "get" what we do. Unfortunately, they will have to sacrifice in this instance to make the league better. I thank them for that, although I still believe the suspensions are required... More info

Tipoffs for 10/14 posted, GmTm/MTP bye

OCTOBER 11, 2007 (8:00AM) -- Click on the Bird's Eye link above. Quick note: Payment Registry will be updated soon. Late fees kick in next Monday. Also, MoneyTree requested to swap the 10/14 and 11/11 blocks of games back... More info

24-Hour: $25/mo., no down, almost all clubs

OCTOBER 10, 2007 (12:00PM) -- While we finish up the scores (they're almost done, which means the STANDINGS pages are almost updated), Mark Scates of NL Up In Smoke and AL-E Rayguns would like to announce that 24-Hour Fitness has monthly memberships at only $25 per month, month-to-month, at any club except the big-ass one in San Ramon. This is a pretty good deal and signing up thru Scates helps him out too. His new job at 24 Hour is his second job. He just had a new baby recently.

Contact Mark at apehangin@comcast.net. I'll let you know when the scores and standings thru 10/7 are updated.

Poor Man's Commish on camera

OCTOBER 9, 2007 (8:00AM) -- While scores from 9/16 thru 10/7 get posted on into the night, and special requests for 10/14 get posted to the Bird's Eye page, let us pre-occupy your time with something else. This is a blogpost shown on the righthand table.

The folks at Bassett Productions (Tom, Sidney, and Andrew) recently made an incredible video about community basketball leagues. It was one of the most riveting pieces I have ever seen about basketball "for the rest of us"... More info

"Swishes & Bricks" from Vinsanity

OCTOBER 8, 2007 (3:30PM) -- Wow, is Vinsanity making a splash or what (see below)? Aside from providing you with some content to enjoy the day after 13 non-stop hours of dreamleague hoops at 4 different gyms, #1 on Poor Man's Commish's to-do list is getting all the scores from 9/16, 9/23, 9/30 and now 10/7 posted. Meanwhile...

Welcome to the first installment of my weekly column that takes a deeper, insightful and frequently irreverent look at the numbers the Dream League players put up every Sunday. Yes...it may seem daunting to pore through a copious stack of scoresheets from the 40 or so games that took place -- squinting hard to discern whether or not the scorekeeper’s hastily scrawled “R” (for Rebound) is actually a “B” (for Block) or in some cases, neither -— but it is something that I truly relish... Please fill in your team names or else

OCTOBER 4, 2007 (11:30AM) -- Now that we got Vince Morales doing some stat-mongering, it's becoming a bigger and bigger pet peeve when you guys don't fill in your team names (and FIRST AND LAST names) on the scoresheet.

So when you fill in your scoresheets every 4th quarter of the game preceding yours when you arrive at the gym before your game, be sure to fill in your first AND LAST names, as well as your team name. Otherwise, we will skip your team when Vince comes across your scoresheet to write a little sumthin-sumthin about it.

NL season matchups set

OCTOBER 4, 2007 (8:00AM) -- The season matchups for the 6 registered NL teams has now been completed. Any last-minute bye requests need to be submitted to me, like, yesterday. Right now, with an even number of teams, we have no byes except for Game Time and MoneyTree on 10/15 due to them starting off the league on 9/23... More info

We're hiring! Play for free! Help wanted!

OCTOBER 4, 2007 (10:30AM) -- Yup, I've finally got way, way, way too much stuff on my plate. I really gotta hand this stuff off to some people. And I'm willing to pay for good service. Over the years, guys have asked if we have jobs available and I've told them we had nothing that would be substantial, but now we do. Here's what help we need... More info
