OCTOBER 6, 2006 (12:00) -- WHOOPS! The #3 Boondocks actually beat the #1 Hustlers last weekend. Clerical error. We are currently working with captains to figure out tipoff and location.

Welcome to the Summer 2006 season (6/8)

OCTOBER 6, 2006 (8:00) -- Pure Foods has now forced both the #2 and #1 seeds to the Losers Bracket, but due to the scheduling difficulties, won't be facing them until 10/15.

That's somewhat good news for the #1 Hustlers and #2 Got-Em since they both avoid the doubleheader. However, it bodes even better for the Hustlers, who retain homecourt advantage this weekend 10/8 against Got-Em and in the morning to boot.

The morning tipoff was due to the heavy requests of the remaining teams at Potrero (see the Bird's Eye view). But let's not count out Got-Em. They've got a lot of heart, especially with the sneaky and gutsy play of floor leader Pin Chou and captain Jason Leong having a mammoth season on the boards. But the Hustlers have some weapons too, usually with their table set by the intense big point man Will Cheung, who is like Chou but scaled to 125% of Chou's size. Then there's small forward Russell Lew who seems to slice and dice his way through the defense, somewhat Chris Mullin-esque sans the downtown shooting, without the ball.

Should be a feisty matchup to start the day at PHRC.

Playoff Matchups for 10/1

SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 (2:00PM) -- The schedule is finalized because it is now on the SCHEDULE/SCORES page. Please see the bird's eye view schedule (link above) for the detailed explanation.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2006 (8:00AM) -- We're still finalizing the schedule and it should be up by today (Thu) afternoon. For now, check the bird's eye view (link is above) and the updated playoff brackets.

Playoff Matchups for 9/24

SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 -- The mucho-complicated playoff brackets have been updated. In the Winners Bracket, it looks like #7 Pure Foods is the team that has stepped it up while the #1 Hustlers, #2 Got 'Em, and #3 Boondocks have held form. Meanwhile, it is becoming a most treacherous path for the Losers Bracket teams.

Since we have so many Losers Bracket teams still alive and we need to whittle them down to one by the time the Winners Bracket survivor has been determined, we will once again take the lowest-seeded teams in the Losers Bracket and force them to play doubleheaders if they advance.

Under normal circumstances with the high-seed vs low-seed strategy, we would have had #13 ODB vs #11 LightsOut for the right to face #4 Kurruption, as well as #8 SFFD vs #9 Aball for the right to face #5 Rising Sun. However, #8 SFFD has already faced #9 Aball during the playoffs, so we will avoid the repeat matchup so as to give some meaning to their first matchup.

In doing so, we have for 9/24 the following in the Losers Bracket: #13 ODB vs #9 Aball, with the winner facing #4 Kurruption, and #11 vs #8 SFFD, with the winner facing #5 Rising Sun.

It does not get any easier for the survivors of those games. Because we will have two more teams join the Losers Bracket from the Winners Bracket after 9/24, we will once again re-seed on 10/1 in the Losers Bracket and four teams will become one. This means a doubleheader for those four Losers Bracket teams on 10/1.

Finally on 10/8 we have the standard "Final Three" of a double-elimination bracket, where the last two Losers Bracket teams face each other for the right to face the Winners Bracket survivor. If the Losers Bracket prevails on 10/8, then we would have a repeat championship on 10/15.

Playoff Matchups for 9/17

SEPTEMBER 13, 2006 -- Even heading into Round 2, the playoff situation is indeed complicated. First, we figured out the Hustlers were the #1 seed above Got 'Em and The Boondocks. This was based on the Hustlers being ahead of Got 'Em due to the strength-of-victory tiebreaker. And Boon couldn't finish above Got due their head-to-head.

When we tried to place #1 vs #8 in Round 2 just as you see in the NCAA brackets, we couldn't avoid #8 SFFD at #1 Hstl, which would be their 3rd matchup this season. To avoid excess repeat matchups, we instead reshuffled with high seeds vs low seeds and found that, while there are some repeat 2nd matchups, there are no 3rd matchups (at least we don't think so):

WINNERS BRACKET
#8 SFFD at #3 Boon (at SQHS)
#11 LOut at #2 Got (at Oakland)
#13 ODB at #1 Hstl (at SF)
#7 Pure at #5 RSun (at Oakland)

LOSERS BRACKET
#9 Abll at #6 Grey (at Oakland)
#12 WOGH at #10 TLB (at Oakland)
Winner-WOGH/TLB at #4 Kurr (at Oakland?)

In the Losers Bracket, we re-seeded. We need to start eliminating teams looking to the following rounds, so we maxed out on the games and that's why the winner of low-seeded WOGH vs TLB needs to play a doubleheader. The Kurr game might actually be in SF instead of Oakland since Kurr AL-Elite team is there, but it's still up in the air.

For the remaining 3 teams that struggled in the AAA-Elite: Mix (2-6), NRI (1-7), and AlBa (1-7), we will combine you with the 4 teams that struggled in the AAA-Premier and call that the AAA-Lower single-elimination playoffs. Let this be the advent of a new division in case we get the same number of AAA teams next season:

"E" = Elite, "P" = Premier
P#3 FAO at E#2 NRI
P#4 Frsh at E#1 Mix
E#3 AlBa at P#2 OSF
P#1 Grnd gets a first round bye

Even though we have Grnd setup for a first-round bye, we might combine the first two rounds into one this weekend 9/17, so we leave open the possibility that Grnd might still play on 9/17, with the 3 winners of the games above playing doubleheaders. This will depend on gym availability.

We'll probably put up a new league site (which means stats will start at zero) soon, just for this single-elim playoff bracket.

8/27 Playoff Picture

AUGUST 25, 2006 -- We finished the regular season with 13 of the 18 teams at or above .500 for double-elimination status... More info

Scheduling Notes and PREDICTIONS for 8/27...

T-SHIRT UPDATE: Superstar kid scorekeeper EJ and Commish spent 4 hours last night sorting out the t-shirts. All t-shirts owed should be passed out by this Sunday at your respective gyms. Please see a scorekeeper. Also, the quantities for the New t-shirts were messed up, so we gave the Circle or Gothic version to those of you whom we think have not been in the league as long as others.

Payment Auto-Forfeits as of 8/23

Excerpted from an email sent today to all captains with outstanding payments: YOU WILL ALSO FORFEIT THE ENTIRE PLAYOFFS. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO PAY. ABSOLUTELY YOUR LAST CHANCE, PERIOD -- NO MORE WAITING ON UNPAID PAYMENTS AFTER 8/27 ANYMORE AND I WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO BE THE BAD GUY AND CUT YOU AND YOUR TEAM OFF.

AUGUST 23, 2006 -- We will be calling refs on the spot to ensure payments have been made to ANY SCOREKEEPER prior to tipoff (not after). The following teams are at risk of forfeiting their next game:

FREE AGENTS OAKLAND: Only one left to pay is Ross Ignacio. Fee plus late fee is now $65. If not paid by 8/27, will forfeit rest of season (playoffs). If team wants to go into playoffs with 7 players, we need the $65 distributed amongst the 7 players. Note: this team is run at break-even, so it's 8 slots paid by 8/20 or bust.

LIGHTS OUT: 7 spots paid by Kevin (2), Louis, Corey, Norm, and Barry (2). $6 cash per player gym fee still needed. Went up from $5 per player since not paid before tipoff on 8/20. Forfeit if not paid by tipoff 8/27.
