Kurruption vs Carpet Depot Losers Bracket Game Moved to SF
MAY 20, 2005 -- By approval of both captains, the Kurruption vs Carpet Depot game has been moved to PHRC in SF, sparing either team from making the trek from IJCC. See schedule grid below...
Final Three Remain
MAY 19, 2005 -- BTR beat Purefoods, but then lost to Kurruption, while the Prodigies earned a huge Winners Bracket advantage by sending Carpet Depot to the Losers Bracket.
Yih-Wei Chien won the battle of the big men as BTR got revenge on Purefoods for their opening round loss. Chien tallied 20 pts 10 reb, with 16 pts coming in the 2nd half. Purefoods' big man Lucas Adra countered with just 11 pts on 4-for-19 from the field, but still grabbed 13 rebounds. This time Chien got support from the frequently absent power forward David Chou, who scored 13 points to go along with 13 boards. Rob Dhat led the way with 22 pts. Abellar led Purefoods with 20 pts while Enrico Thomas chipped in 18 in defeat.
Kurruption had the benefit of the higher seed as they awaited BTR to arrive in Oakland. Anthony Santos got off to a slow start with no attempts in the first and 0-for-6 through the start of the third, but then got hot, scoring all of his 15 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Kurruption overcame a 32-21 halftime deficit to scorch BTR 26-to-11 in the 3rd and 43-to-24 total in the 2nd half. They had the size and then some to matchup with BTR as Andre Lockett added 14 pts 10 reb 2 blk, F.Zakkak had 9 reb 1 blk, and Mark Skates rebounded from last week's shaky performance to post a 6 reb 5 stl 3 blk effort. Chien had 17 pts 13 reb in this one, but it was no cakewalk as he shot 8-for-22. Chou played spectacularly and led BTR with 19 pts 12 reb 6 ast 3 blk, but Dhat could only muster up 7 pts on just 3-for-7 shooting, with a shocking 1 field goal attempt in the entire 2nd half. Without the benefit of an eyewitness account, you have to wonder if Dhat got injured or something. It was Dhat's third game of the day (he plays on the NL Play Hard team).
In the Winners Bracket, the Prodigies had control of the game against Carpet Depot, although the final score was only two possessions apart, 70-64. Barry Lee led the quicker Prodigies with 24 pts. Rhodel Rosales added 22 pts 6 reb 7 stl, including a stretch in the 3rd quarter of 10 straight Prodigies points. He single-handedly kept the Prodigies from falling apart as they trailed after the 1st half with a 37-35 deficit and started the 3rd quarter going 0-for-6, then finally got going with Rosales' 10 straight points beginning at the 5:30 mark. Carpet Depot couldn't capitalize, finishing with just 12 points in the 3rd. Jon Reynoso led them with 26 pts 12 reb 5 ast including 6-for-10 from beyond the arc, but he also committed 6 turnovers. Nelson Cruz chipped in 19 pts on 8-for-14 from the floor. Carpet Depot didn't help themselves during the comeback attempt by committing a combined 6 turnovers in the 4th period alone.
Both Kurruption and Carpet Depot must now duke it out in the last Losers Bracket game to earn the right to face Prodigies. The Prodigies not only have home court advantage, but also a one game advantage on either opponent since the two will have already played a game at 10am in Oakland, then had to drive over the bridge for the championship in SF. Such is the nature of the beast in double-elimination -- other leagues would have already crowned the Prodigies as champion.
Unfortunately due to other playoff scheduling, there is no alternative in terms of the scheduling, unless both Kurruption and Carpet Depot want to move their 10am game from Oakland to SF to spare the commute after their last Losers Bracket game (captains and captains only must contact the commish ASAP if they want this).
