Pac Coast and Rayguns Vie for Driver's Seat

JUNE 9, 2005 -- Scores from the past few weeks, updated playoff brackets, and previews of this Sunday's matchups will be posted shortly...

Champs from Last Two Seasons Eliminated

MAY 19, 2005 -- Pac Coast Real Estate eliminated last season's champs Game Time while the Rayguns eliminated last summer's champs, the East Bay Cardinals.

Four of #4 Pac Coast's players scored in double figures as they edged #5 Game Time, 61-59. Karl Gusner led with 13 points, followed by Ryan Dunn with 12, Jimmy Luu with 11, and Chris Hong with 10. Game Time roared back from a 48-34 fourth quarter deficit with a 25-to-13 scoring outburst, with Hubert Liu scoring 10 of his 17 points. However, Liu tallied just 2 points on 1-for-8 shooting in the third period. Brian Liang finished with a game-high 10 rebounds but managed to score just 11 points on just 2-for-6 from the field to go along with 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

In the #2 vs #7 game, the Rayguns disposed of the Cardinals, 80-59, ending a painful season for the Cards who started the season without point guard and leader Johnson Bui and ended the season on Sunday without the services of star scoring guard Vannack Phann. Jeremy DelaCruz led the Rayguns with 22 pts 10 ast while Carlo Lacsamana connected for 18 points but went down with an ankle injury late in the game. The status of Lacsamana, who leads the Rayguns in scoring at about 18 ppg, for the remainder of the playoffs is unknown. Although the Cards were without Phann, the Rayguns did not have scorer Alvin Vinoya or star forward Al Yee available either.

Finally, the #3 Wildcatz eliminated #6 Play Hard, 64-48. Terraz Lee led the Catz with 17 pts 10 reb. Dave Hiroshima added 16 pts while Jeremy Brady chipped in 11 very athletic points. Play Hard was simply outscored by three to five points each quarter. Most noticeably they were plagued by 7 turnovers in the 2nd quarter. Play Hard was led by Jay Pattugalan and Manish Nandani with 14 pts each and Rob Dhat with 13 pts. Dave Chen had a strong defensive game with 4 blocked shots and 9 rebounds, but was 0-for-6 on the offensive end. Play Hard was without the services of all-star scorer Carlos Gacula, but the Wildcatz didn't have their star forward Will Wagner.

The upcoming round features no Losers Bracket games because with sub-.500 records, neither Game Time, the Cards, nor Play Hard were granted double-elimination status. The Bay Area HEADS face off against resurgent Pac Coast. The HEADS have the size advantage with Eric Heidler down low and can match up on the quickness of Pac Coast, which must rely on finesse and ball movement to free up Ryan Dunn and Karl Gusner. It should be an interesting matchup at small forward between non-ppg stat stuffers and defensive stalwarts Julian Ramos of the HEADS and Ross Lim of PCRE, although Lim is still recovering from ACL surgery.

On the other side of the bracket, another two teams that like to go up and down: the Rayguns and the Wildcatz. The Wildcatz are without the Ginobili-like Mike Reding and will need Hiroshima to stay hot from outside. The Rayguns hope to have Yee back, but he may not make a difference if they fall into their turnover-prone lapses.

STATS UPDATE: Stats are still being worked on slowly but surely. We do not know why some leagues have more stats done than other leagues. All we can say is that we remain committed to finishing them, so we advise for your own sake that you lower expectations on the stats to almost zero, as with 99.9% of the other leagues out there, and exercise extreme continued patience. Try to focus on the actual competition and format of the league. Do not let your love for stats ruin the essence of the game and the community that you have become part of.

To further exacerbate the problem, storing the scanned statsheets using Yahoo Briefcase has proven to be a waste of time. Yahoo clearly has an "undocumented feature" which prevents downloads up to a certain megabyte transfer limit. That's why most of the captains can't login and download. You'll have to ask Yahoo why they are in essence cannibalizing their very own service. Thus, Yahoo Briefcase is probably only good for downloading a little spreadsheet here or there. We'd love to just post PDFs on the website itself, but our site is so complex and database-heavy, there is no easy way to do this. So you'll just have to wait for the teenage statcrew to finish it's job.

It might please you to note that we are adding more stats people (kids/adults) next season. One problem this season is that our website is not entirely secure, therefore although we have gotten a handful of requests from players volunteering to input stats, we simply cannot afford to take those security risks right now. We must protect our investment, otherwise a breach of security could result in no stats for anyone past, present, or future. Still, we would like to thank those of you who volunteered to step up. 'Nuff said for now.
