Da Bien Clinches Bronx Conference Title in Drubbing of Run B&C |
| December 9, 2005 - New York, NY (DL) - December 8, 2005 - Da Bien would probably rather have Jeff Tu playing with them than yelling at them in street clothes from the sidelines with an injured ankle. “Scrub,” Tu chided when All-Star Kevin Park missed a free throw. “You guys are lucky!” he scolded as his side almost gave up a big lead late in the game.
As it was, Da Bien missed Tu and several others in name only as they only dressed five players for their intra-conference contest against a hot Run B&C side that was without backcourt jitterbug Eden Chuang. He was also in civilian clothes—coaching, cheering and taking his water in a Bud Light can thanks to a sprained ankle he suffered on Monday night tooling around with what Tu was calling his guys – scrubs.
What kind of a player smiles when a candid photo is trying to be taken? Hollywood, that's who. KP's from LA. It's in his blood. Always had it, always will. | “Man. I wasn’t even doing anything. I was tooling around with some people who don’t even play basketball and I came down funny when I tried to make a move on this guy who works as a high school geometry teacher. That’s embarrassing, eh?”
Eh? EC’s Vancouver roots still shine through.
Down the Killer Canadian, B&C otherwise had a full compliment of players, but it would still not be enough against the short-handed Da Bien.
They did match Da Bien in one department – that of fashion.
With Da Bien unveiling their new uniforms, this match-up pitted two of the League’s best dressed who recently turned in their old threads for something new. Due to a League error, it also created a game of white-on-white as both sides sported the home white look.
Proving that all Asians do not look alike however, with both sides dressed alike, the officials and the scorekeeping team were still able to call and track the game flawlessly.
B&C started the game competitively, but soon began to crack against Da Bien’s active zone. Early turnovers led to some easy buckets for Park and B&C played uphill the rest of the way. It was 11-5 at the end of the 1st quarter.
After an early surge from Milton Han that included a pull-up three and a patented “Milt Drop,” Da Bien restored order and built a 12 point lead at the half with stifling defense and blistering transition offense, which featured an acrobatic Park shovel dish to Virgilio Borbo. The trend continued and escalated in the 3rd as B&C committed turnovers like it was in fashion. (Uniforms, yes. Turnovers, no) Park and Borbo once again took advantage on the break, pushing the ball and creating scoring chances for De Los Reyes, Dan Hsu and Ed Lee.
Run B&C breaks a huddle. Not pictured: EC's Bud Light. Is that Marcus Camby to the right? | Han kept his team in the game, scoring all eight of their points in the 3rd as he gave a glimpse of the Han of yester-season we have come to know and love. But, the lead was fourteen to begin the 4th and B&C (3-4) would get no closer as they only scored 4 points in the final frame. Da Bien displayed a cold efficiency in closing out a demoralized B&C which finished the game sloppy and frustrated, but well dressed. The final score was 45-25 Da Bien (6-1).
B&C may have dressed sharp, but they did not play that way. In committing 27 turnovers and making only 9 field goals, to which 3 were assisted on, it was sorely evident that they missed Canada Kid’s ball control, scoring, and ball distribution abilities. He’s much better off to his team holding the rock than a can of Bud.
The number says it all. | Han led B&C with 13 points. Chris Milla cleared 7 rebounds and Henry Young provided 4 points, 5 boards, 2 steals, and a block but with him being the only player besides Han to make more than one field goal on the game, it was tough going for the improving team.
Da Bien was workmanlike and once again got a stocking stuffer performance – inside the win was a little bit of something from everyone.
KP led them with 13 points, 6 boards, and 2 assists and steals each. SDL had 12 points, 6 boards, 3 dimes, 4 steals, and a season high 5 swats. Borbo threw in 10 points and collected 2 assists while Lee and Hsu chipped in 5 points each while Lee also had 3 assists and Hsu 7 rebounds and 4 steals.
The win clinched another Conference title for Da Bien as they prepare for a difficult post season in search of their 4th League Championship.
Afterwards, B&C was clearly unhappy with their effort against the League’s best who give weekly clinics on how to play team basketball at the expense of Dream League’s best competition.
The Chippy Canadian said, “I’m going to find that geometry teacher and show him the underside of my foot.”
