Alex Cruz 56, CloseOut 42

Alex Cruz Rolls to 3-0 Start

MARCH 6, 2005 -- Alex Cruz continued their impressive AAA debut with a convincing win over CloseOut, 56-42. The lead switched hands several times during the first quarter as both teams were getting into the flow of their offenses and feeling out their opponent. Alex Cruz took control of the game in the second quarter by outscoring its opponents 16-8 to take a 30-19 halftime lead. CloseOut missed out on several key opportunities in this pivotal quarter with a variety of missed fastbreak lay-ups and traveling violations.

Virgil Taylor (15 points) and Joe Ruffino (13 points) once again led the offensive attack for Alex Cruz, initiating their half-court offensive sets and vaunted fastbreak attack. Ray Ruffino also contributed with strong inside play, collecting 7 rebounds and playing solid defense.

CloseOut, coming off a tough loss to Old Skool the previous week, played well for stretches of the game. CloseOut’s 3-guard rotation of Clarence Hu (6 points, 4 rebounds), Chris Chuang (6 points, 3 assists), and Mike Chui (7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) provided enough energy and hustle to help keep the game respectable throughout. Mike Ma (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Leon Tsui (7 points) complemented the guards with solid interior play. CloseOut must now win Sunday’s matchup with the 2-1 High-OcTane CPs to avoid starting their season 0-3.
