#9 Hi-OcTane Sends #20 WKYA Cinderella Home |
| DECEMBER 19, 2004 -- #20 WKYA's Cinderella season ended as the #9 Hi-OcTane CPs advanced one more step in the Winners Bracket. Premiere post player Dan Mok was unavailable for WKYA and Hi-OcTane took advantage with a convincing 60-46 victory.
Hi-OcTane used a balance attack of John Hsu (13 pts), Doug Murai (12 pts), and Jim Shen (12 pts) to post mini-surges in the 1st and 3rd quarters, stretching a 33-25 halftime lead into a 52-37 advantage by the start of the 4th.
In Mok's absence, Kai Hopton led WKYA with 18 pts while Chris Wong erupted for 14, but Thomas Ko couldn't get on track, going just 2-for-11 for 6 pts.
WKYA ended their season at 4 wins and 8 losses, despite a 1-7 record heading into the playoffs. The Hopton-Mok-Ko trio had always been potent, but for some reason the team couldn't get things to jive until the playoffs. First, they avenged a regular-season loss to DFB in Round 1. An hour after the buzzer ended for that game WKYA jumped on #4 Ryusei, avenging a regular-season 4-point loss, squeaking by with a 1-point overtime victory, and capitalizing on Ryusei's absence of captain, all-star, and leading scorer Jon Kwok. WKYA then mercilessly disposed of #5 Alum by 13 points, setting up the Cinderella matchup against #9 Hi-OcTane.
Hi-OcTane now is just one game away from reaching the coveted final, despite owning single-elimination throughout the playoffs. They face relatively low-seeded #6 Franchise, which still has double-elimination status. Hi-OcTane earned its stripes with the important upset over the #1 Flying Elephants, but they can't overlook Franchise, which begat #7 SFFD and #14 FA-P, which begat #2 BTR and #3 BTU, respectively. Despite the luck of the draws, Franchise still has been taking care of business.
It's going to be an excellent matchup between these two teams that have former AL players leading the way. Hsu, Murai, and Shen will have to contend with Galen Ma and James Tao of Franchise, two of the grittiest defenders in the league. But even though WKYA is now gone, there are still a few Cinderellas remaining. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
