#9 SF Tigers Eliminates the #5 Newcomers | Hong Sun of the SF Tigers grabs one of his 13 rebounds.
| | Hong Sun of the SF Tigers grabs one of his 13 rebounds. | DECEMBER 11, 2004 -- Devin Wong scored 16 points and tallied 7 assists, 4 of them in the 4th quarter, to lead the #9 SF Tigers past the #5 Newcomers. The Tigers used an 18-10 2nd quarter to build their lead to 33-22, but the Newcomers chipped away at the lead, bringing the score to 46-41 with 6:00 to go and 54-50 with 3:00 left.
But the Tigers' Hong Sun could not be stopped as he got his 10th point off his 13th rebound to give the Tigers the insurmountable 56-50 lead. Two free throws by Andrew Lee brought the Newcomers to their closest margin since the first quarter at 58-55, but a desperation three by the Newcomers' Blake Roy fell way short and the Newcomers' season came to a screeching halt with back-to-back playoff losses to Fob Five and now the Tigers.
Roy led the Newcomers with 16 pts but committed 9 turnovers. Pin Chou added 13 points and Kevin Lee grabbed 11 rebounds, but Andrew Lee, the Newcomers' only post threat, had just 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting. The Newcomers were also hindered by having only 5 players available for the game. Aside from Wong and Sun, the Tigers had Jon Lee with another solid 12 pts 9 reb. Scott Uyeda shot just 2-for-8.
The Newcomers ended their 5-and-5 season not being able to capitalize on their relatively high #5 seed. They could not get past the elite this season, with 7-point losses to the HEADS and Runnin' Rebels, before bowing out to the strong teams of the Western Conference in the playoffs. Re-alignment of the AL should help their cause, but the Newcomers still need to find a bonafide post player to complement Lee, as well as a sharpshooter to take some load off his shoulders.
Meanwhile, the Tigers now must continue on through the Losers Bracket. They are the lowest seed in the Losers Bracket and will need to face the highest seed to survive. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
