Alliance Avenges Critical Loss to Tigers with a Rout |
| DECEMBER 5, 2004 -- #9 Alliance took care of business by disposing of the #8 SF Tigers, 47-29, and exacting revenge on the 10-point loss to the Tigers in Week 7, which played a role in shoving Alliance down to #9 and out of double-elimination status. The Tigers were rumored to have a seriously depleted roster, although the scoresheet showed that their main pieces, Devin Wong, Scott Uyeda, and Jon Lee, were present. Maybe Wong and Lee were saving their energy for the NL playoff game, knowing that with the #8 seed, they still had one more life. This was a very uncharacteristically low-scoring output by the Tigers, not to mention the near 20-point deficit.
Eugene Chung led Alliance with 13 pts, while Wong was held to just 3 pts on 1-for-8 shooting. Uyeda led the Tigers with 10 pts, but only on 5-for-15 shooting, and Lee did not play in the 2nd half. All-star Donny Young did not play for Alliance.
The Tigers now fall to the Losers Bracket and draw the #5 Newcomers, since in the Losers Bracket, the highest-seeded team always plays against the lowest-seeded team if the two teams have not already played against each other previously in the playoffs. If the Tigers of old show up, then this will be a classic battle down low between Jon Lee of the Tigers and Andrew Lee of the Newcomers. Wong and Uyeda might just be a tad too quick for the Newcomers' guards, Pin Chou and Blake Roy. And the Tigers get the nod in terms of team chemistry. This could be the last we see of the #5 seed. Then again, the game's out in Oakland, home turf of the Newcomers.
Meanwhile, Alliance's playoff path gets no easier as they meet #1 Hoopwear for the third time this season due to (un)luck of the draw in the brackets and seedings. However, the game is back in San Mateo (or Belmont), which means Young will probably play and if they ever needed to get over the Hoopwear hump, the time would be now. They've got to stop three-point gunner Guy Kitigawa, but they can't afford to put pogo stick Gary Chern on him because Chern and power forward Jack Chin need to guard the bigger Shawn Wallace and Jon Chin of Hoopwear, respectively, down low. Wallace and Chin are going to be difficult assignments. With the assumption that ankle-breaker Josh Tsuitsui will be available for Hoopwear, Alliance might be better served going with a box-and-1 on Kitigawa, although Wallace and Tsuitsui are certainly capable of also hitting threes.
Because the Winners Bracket on 12/12 could result in no additional teams falling to the Losers Bracket, by this fortunate circumstance, the winners of the Losers Bracket games on 12/12 will not be required to play against each other until 12/19, in order to keep pace with the Winners Bracket. Otherwise, a double-header would have been in store for the winners of Tigers-Newcomers and Big Gamerz-Wildcards. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
