Weary Bears Wear Out Wounded Dragons |
| Having to play their 2nd game of a doubleheader on Sunday, the Gummi Bears had more than enough in the tank to put away the Wounded Dragons who also had to play their second game on the day after suffering a defeat to YTMT earlier in the afternoon. Fatigue was not a factor for either team as the Gummi Bears played their entire rotation meaningful minutes and the Wounded Dragons had an entire hour to rest their weary bones and muscles after their first contest earlier in the day. Behind Eric Wang's 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, the Gummi Bears defeated the Wounded Dragons (0-4) 51-17 and improved to 3-1 as they displayed themselves as a contender for the league title with Wang in the lineup.
Last season, the Gummi Bears were known as Maximum Output. This season, as an expansion franchise, they carried over many of the same players that were on last season's team. That team last season finished second to the eventual champions Da Bien, who with this season's realignment, are now in the Uptown Conference. They had defeated Da Bien in the championship round of the playoffs thus forcing a second and final determining game for the league crown which Da Bien ultimately escaped with. With Wang in the line up and Jiang Yu posting his usual double doubles, this team is as dangerous as it comes.
This season's squad features some new free agent signees including guard Jonathan Guilfoile who got the team off to a fast start yesterday with the team's first 2 baskets of the game. Despite his quick start, the Wounded Dragons held a brief 7-4 advantage after Kenny Zee drilled a three point bomb. That lead soon evaporated after Alex Lien hit a trey of his own from the top of the key to tie things up. From that point on, it was all Gummi Bears. Lien's personal 5-0 run continued after his trey with a steal and coast to coast lay-up. Derek Ting would hit the last of the Wounded Dragon field goals of the 1st half with a jumper in the first quarter. Zee's free throw in the 2nd period would be the team's only point of the frame.
Sputtering offensively as they had in their first game, the Wounded Dragons couldn't hit the side of a barn with their shots during the second. The Gummi Bears weren't much better though. They only managed 10 of their own points, most of them coming towards the end of the period as Wang hit a trey with 25 seconds left and then Guilfoile scored on a lay-up off an assist from Wang right before the half. The lead was 28-10 and that was all that the Gummi Bears needed.
The Wounded Dragons came out firing in the 2nd half and scored the first 5 points to mount a small comeback. John Roe hit a sky hook over Yu and then Donald Chan drained a trey to cut the lead to 28-15. But once David Lee scored on an inbounds pass from Mark Kiang, Yu swished a three, and Andrew Han scored on a coast to coast steal lay-in, it was 37-15 before Ben Wallace had a chance to tighten his 'fro.
The 4th quarter was a lot about steals and coast to coast lay-ups. Guilfoile harrassed Kachit Kitcharayothin into turning the ball over and took it in for a hoop with the harm. Guilfoile is quickly becoming one of the league's top defenders with his intensity and stick-to-it-ive-ness. Tom Le did the same as did Wang and the score was 46-17. The Gummi Bears' "36 Minutes of Hell" D was in full display. The Wounded Dragons scored just 2 points, on a pair of Kitcharayothin free throws.
Lien notched 9 points and 2 steals and Guilfoile had a near double double with 9 points and 8 boards. Zee led the Wounded Dragons with 4 points and Chan had 7 boards.
