Mo Betta Ballers 69, Tri-State InvAsian 62

Hsiao Simply Scinillating

Craig Hodges has been there. Drazen Petrovic used to be there. Trent Tucker would visit from time to time. This place? The Zone. Last night, Mo' Betta Ballers Danny Hsiao stopped in for 25 points on a sensational 9 of 16 shooting with 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. He also nabbed 9 boards and had 3 dimes to lead Mo' Betta (2-1) to a 69-62 win over Tri-State InvAsian (1-2) in a shootout that turned out to be the highest combined scoring game of the season in Dream League.

If it weren't for a botched time out call in the season opener that led to a tough OT loss to Gen X, Mo' Betta could be sitting undefeated. The suprise team so far this season, Mo' Betta looks like it could make a deep run in the playoffs if things are going right for them like they were last night.

Hsiao was quite simply put, unconscious. And while this was so, his team was absolutely very conscious. Conscious of the fact that last week Hsiao saw limited playing time and thus struggled to hang on to win.

"Man, who was that out there? Sean Perkins? That lefty three...his rotation on the ball...it just looks like he flips it up there without trying. Like Sleepy Sam," said Tri-State's guard Felix Shen after the tough defeat.

Thing is, the game didn't seem like it would turn out to be a close one after the first 6 minutes elapsed. Mo' Betta jumped out to a 12-1 lead as Yian Wang had a couple buckets and Hsiao hit his first three, which was a sign of things to come for him.

Tri-State climbed back in the first quarter as Marshall Cho heated up after a cold start and scored 8 points to eventually only trail 18-10 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Mo' Betta held on to its advantage and then some as Walter Ho scored 8 points and Mo' Betta led 35-26 going into the half. Just a couple days removed from his 30 somethingth birthday, Ho still has the legs and drive that you usually find in guys 10 years his junior.

Things really got heated up in the 3rd. We're talking EN FUEGO.

After Tri-State's Sabir "Swishy" Rassiwalla and Hsiao each hit a trifecta for his respective team to make it 40-31, Tri-State went on a blitz that was reminiscient of the Alpine Striders of LA blitzing their opponents and leaving them dazed and confused.

Cho stole the ball and took it coast to coast himself. Ray Lieu hit a shot underneath. Swishy hit back-to-back J's around a Mike Choi bucket and suddenly it was 42-39 and several of the fans had yet to return from their intermission bathroom break. After Wang of Mo' Betta hit a shot to staunch the bleeding a bit, Swishy hit a J and a trey to knot it all up at 44.

Mo' Betta countered with 5 straight points to take a 49-44 lead and then Swishy continued his hot hand by hitting his final J of the quarter before Cho converted two free throws to set up the final quarter at 51-48. Swishy had an entire game in the 3rd as he had 16 points on 7-10 shooting.

In the final period, the action was against fast and furious as Mo' Betta did just enough to hold off the spent Tri-State team. Each time Tri-State would make a little run, Mo' Betta would counter. If it wasn't Dean Shin on an up and under, it was usually Hsiao drilling his dagger three. He hit a pair in the 4th to keep Tri-State at bay, including his last one to make it 65-58. That was the proverbial nail in the coffin and for his efforts in this game, Hsiao was named the Take One, Inc. Player of the Week in the Uptown Conference.

Wang finished the contest with 18 points (8-17 shooting) and 4 rebounds and Ho had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Perhaps most impressive was his limited turnovers. Entering the contest, he was averaging 4 turnovers a game, but only had two last night. For Tri-State, Cho recorded 27 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Swishy, after a smokin' 3rd, had a quiet 4th and didn't score in the frame. He had 18 points on 8-14 shooting. Shen continued to drop dimes as he had 8 to go along with 7 points. He currently leads the league with 5.7 assists.

Notes: Rich Kim of Mo' Betta had to leave the game in the 2nd quarter with a cut above his eye. Bleeding was profuse at the time of the incident. Doctors tended to the injury and anticipate that it shouldn't hold him out that long...Swishy came to the game in violation of the uniform code and had to borrow a pair of shorts to play in the game. Surely, as his 3rd quarter outburst proved, the shorts don't hinder. Here's to hoping he remembers to bring his own each week...
