AUGUST 5, 2004 -- The tipoff times have been scheduled at Potrero, whereby we have been reassured that the scoreboard console has been fixed and will be available this Sunday. There is still a 1% chance that some of times could get shifted after 8am Thu 8/5 because the director has not called back to confirm everything 100%, but if this happens, all captains will receive a phone call from the league immediately. Meanwhile, here are previews for 8/8...
#2 Prime Time vs #1 Oakland Rams: Due to Touchless's advantage earned from last Sunday's toppling of the Rams, Prime actually has the "home court" since they belong in Touchless's conference...Prime seems a little under-sized and not quite as quick to rebound as you have the nimble Ross Lim and Jameel Uddeen crashing the boards for the Rams -- Prime's Gary and Kevin Liu have their work cut out down low, not to mention lack of height to defend Bill Truong...The ballhandling and shooting of Prime is as good as it gets, but Ross Hiroshima and Rob Shintaku have to continue to hit open threes, with Hiroshima also penetrating and dishing for them to have a chance...Scott Uyeda might be an X-factor as he grabbed 8 hustle rebounds against the Big Gamerz -- perhaps he can keep Lim and Uddeen at bay, but rumor has it he might not be in town...Without Uyeda, Prime will have a tough time.
Winner-Prime/Rams vs #3 Touchless: Anything can happen and we've certainly seen our fair share of Losers Bracket victors in the past, but mostly in the NL...The problem here is that Touchless is an up-tempo team and Prime or Rams will be tired from killing each other off...BTW, there is our AL 3-Point Shootout at 2pm plus a AAA semi-final which accounts for the 1.5-hour break in between; we recommend heading on over to Rustico at 300 De Haro Ave (cross street 16th St) for a little grub in between...Anyways, Prime's gas tanks will be more depleted than the younger Rams and Prime again is under-sized...Touchless's Dennis Yuen is out of town, but that doesn't mean they can't get it done with their usual hustle...Bernard Washington and Solomon Soo Hoo are the X-factors for Touchless...If Prime, they need to continue to shoot the lights out (tough to do)...If Rams, being one game down, it will be all heart from Lim and Uddeen and the rest need to ride their tide, e.g., Kevin Le scoring some points.
AUGUST 3, 2004 -- Recaps from 8/1...
#6 Big Gamerz 67, #4 Team Masterworks 54: Battle of depleted rosters...19-10 3rd quarter spurt was the diff. for Gamerz, otherwise a dead-heat...Jin Kim (B) 25 pts 11 reb, somewhat negating John Nguyen's (T) 14 pts 16 reb, Tone Sue (B) 22 pts on 6-for-12 from downtown, John Nasol (T) 18 pts 6 ast...Unsung heroes: Jeremy Lee (B) 12 reb, Fred Castillo (B) hitting two threes off the bench...Masterworks only had 5 guys again.
#2 Prime Time 59, #8 Pure Foods 49: Prime exploded in 4th quarter to outscore Pure 19-9...Ross Hiroshima (PT) 1st half: 2-for-14, 2nd half: 6-for-8, all told: 22 pts on 5-for-15 treys with 4 ast...Rob Shintaku supplied other Prime offense with 12 pts on 3 threes, Liu brothers combined for 23 reb, with Gary getting 14 of them...Jason Rivera (PF) held to 10 pts on 4-for-13 shooting...Lucas Adra (PF) 14 pts 16 reb, but shot only 2-for-6 in 2nd half...Pure combined for just 3-for-22 from beyond the arc...Enrico Thomas 11 pts on 5-for-13 shooting.
#3 Touchless 48, #1 Oakland Rams 45: Typical Touchless point distribution: Dennis Yuen 10 pts, Bernard Washington 10 pts, everyone else under 7 pts or less, but distributed...Yuen clutch baseline fadaway ball hitting every portion of rim and backboard as shotclock winds down for critical bucket late in 4th to give Touchless 47-43...With Kevin Le (O) not hitting (2-for-8 from downtown) and nobody else either (total: 2-for-14 on treys), Ross Lim took Rams on his shoulders in 2nd half with 8 of 14 total pts...Jameel Uddeen (O) held to 6 pts on 3-for-14 shooting...More stifling defense by Touchless: Rams' role-players Scott Narasaki and Jon Thai held to 2 pts on just 5 shot attempts -- they average 10 pts on 11 attempts/game combined...Bill Truong (O) quiet 13 pts.
#2 Prime Time 74, #6 Big Gamerz 48: Fast and high-stamina Prime guards too much for Gamerz...Gamerz shot just 5-for-27 in entire 2nd half while Prime blitzed on 15-for-36 including 6 threes...Ross Hiroshima (P) remained hot: 27 pts on 6-for-14 downtown, teammate Rob Shintaku: 18 pts on 4-for-10 downtown, Gary Liu 11 pts 9 reb, Scott Uyeda a Kidd-like 8 pts 8 reb 6 ast...Gamerz got 16 pts 6 ast from Jimmy Luu, but he only shot 6-for-21...Jin Kim (B) 11 pts 12 reb on just 5-for-18, Tone Sue just 2-for-11.
