Probable Switch Away from Visitacion Valley |
| APRIL 13, 2004 -- We have been informed by the program director at Visitacion Valley that Dream League cannot continue at the Middle School without formalizing exorbitant district facility usage fees. Dream League has thus far been run as a program of the Beacon Center, which is situated inside and maintains a symbiotic relationship with the Middle School, but Beacon programs on weekends were recently found to be outside the scope of the formal arrangement between the two entities.
Indeed, there was a mole within these organizations that paid no respect to how the league has positively influenced the lives of underprivileged youth in the direct community, such as teenager James Love getting off the streets and coming to our games to scorekeep your games each and every Sunday (and very slowly but surely getting those stats inputted online each Wednesday). In essence, a grinch at VVBC has stole Christmas.
As of this writing, we are working hard to secure either Palega or Potrero Recreation Center as the new and, barring unforeseen circumstances, FINAL site for the league. The address for Palega is 500 Felton Street, SF, CA (Map). The arrangement is expected to be finalized by the end-of-day Tuesday, April 13. We are targeting a "quick" switch on 4/18, moving all of the games from VVBC to Palega.
We understand that switching sites for the second time this season -- from Hamilton to VVBC, then VVBC to Palega/Potrero (tentative) -- can be very frustrating and may paint us disorganized misfits, but we ask that you please consider just how difficult it is to secure a gym at a reasonable cost in SF on a weekend. We've really been snake-bitten this season.
Dream League has explored and leveraged almost every connection we have in the city, and we will not give up until we find a permanent home for many seasons to come. We do have an advocate in the higher-ups of the SF Rec & Parks Dept, so we hope that you can hang in there and that the pending change does not affect your passion for basketball too greatly and we thank you for being so flexible.
Please check with your captain. Your captain will be responsible for voicing concerns and preferences on behalf of your entire team. Your team will need to decide on the following:
- If Palega or Potrero is secured in time for the 4/18 games, are you ready for the switch?
- If we *cannot* secure Palega or Potrero for 4/18, would you be OK with postponing the 4/18 games to 4/25 (or possibly later), which means that the playoffs and championship would be moved back accordingly?
- Is your team committed to coping with these changes? It is understandable if your team has had enough of the gym problems and does not want to continue. Please note that we have had problems like this before with our other leagues, yet the other leagues continue to thrive to this day.
- Hamilton Rec Center is still available at 9am and 10am. While these two time slots are not enough to support the entire league, does your team want any of those time slots? Please note that it will be less complicated for the league to schedule adequate scorekeeping staff if all four games each week are at one location such as Palega.
Again, thank you for your patience and keep checking this page for updates. Your captain will be informed by phone if changes are not confirmed with the facilities, as well as acknowledged by the captains via email, within 48 hours of tipoff.
APRIL 8, 2004 -- The league would like to thank everyone for their patience as we have dealt with so many gym issues this season. We know for a fact that we may seem disorganized or not offering the best parity amongst the Women's teams, but please bear in mind that we are doing our best to service the demand out there for weekend women's basketball, in which we are all fortunate that there is enough demand. People not as dedicated to women's basketball would have already given up and cancelled the league. I'm sure it was equally difficult when the NBA or even the WNBA first started out, trying to stand on its own two feet.
Sure, there are leagues like the SF Parks & Rec Dept at Eureka Valley and Upper Noe, but again they are unable to offer something for weekend warriors and of course they are in a better position to offer stable gym situations, at least on weeknights. On the contrary their nestled locations with hard-to-find parking spots at night do not necessarily make it convenient for women across the Bay Area to attend after work, either. Also, please note that their internally sponsored weekend indoor soccer league has prevented us from using their gyms since December and ongoing through May.
Then we've been snakebitten by the VVBC situation, which is urgently being resolved by school officials as we speak (as of this writing, there is no change to the upcoming 4/18 schedule). While we understand any frustration you have gone through as a basketball player, the only thing we would like to say is that despite all of this, we are still genuinely doing our best to keep the women's basketball community alive. We hope that this dedication will soften the blows you have taken. We truly believe that your contribution and commitment this season is helping to setup a foundation for women's basketball that will slowly but surely thrive as more seasons go by...
By the way, some of the game stats are now up, but the PLAYER STATS page is obviously incomplete. We're continuing to work on this with the help of James and EJ, kids who keep score with us at VVBC.
