TRI-STATE OPENS PLAYOFFS WITH CONVINCING 10-POINT WIN OVER NYC GRITTY COMMITTEE |
| NYC Gritty completed their regular season campaign with and identical record (5-3) as defending summer season champions TSIVOS, including a thrilling buzzer-beater win over Old School, but due to league seeding tiebreaker rules they found themselves suffering the indignities of a #7 seed while Old School received the #2. But true to their team personality, NYC just put their collective heads down, strapped on their hard hats, and went to work. After dispatching GNB with ease in a play-in game, they found themselves matched up against Tri-State for the right to face the surprising Shanghai Surprise in the quarterfinals.
Without the long distance plan provided by multitalented big man and service provider Chris Youn, who hit 4/4 treys against Old School in their regular season meeting, the Gritty Guys found offense a lot harder to come by. Shooting only 32% as a team from the field (2/12 from beyond the arc), NYC was only able to post 30 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. Kyu Lee struggled through an unlucky 0/13 shooting night, including a few gimmes that he simply yipped. John Park was refused to quit as he dished out a game-high 9 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds, swiped 3 steals and chipped in 6 points to boot. NYC Gritty was led in scoring by a strong performance by big man Vic Chia, who had a nice game with 14 points and 12 boards. Kwon Lim made his presence felt with 13 points and 4 boards.
On the Tri-State side, things were also a bit rusty offensively for anyone not named Felix Shen or Vegas Dave Wong. While the rest of the team struggled through a 10/32 fg performance (and an atrocious 5/21 from the line), Shen was the very definition of opportunistic efficiency with 4/4 treys, one in each quarter, and each one near the expiration of the shot clock. Vegas Dave Wong was his slithery old self, snaking his way to the basket for 18 points. Big men Marco Palacios (12 boards) and Arif Ansari (11 rebs) anchored the Tri-State defense that yielded only 47 points.
If NYC Gritty Committee is to get themselves back into the fray, they’ll have to do it the hard way now, through the loser’s bracket. Their first hurdle with be Rob Schopen’s GenX. Tri-State moves onto a matchup with the hottest team in the league, the commissioner’s own Shanghai Surprise. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
