Bearmen Buckle Down, Get by Gritty | Bearmen Set to Meet TSIVOS in Finals
| January 14, 2010 – New York, NY (DL) – Yes, someone had to win and someone had to lose and for that, the League apologizes.
If a semifinal could send two teams to take on an awaiting team in the AAA Finals, let it be this one.
TSIVOS will meet the Bearmen 2.0 next Thursday in potentially two games in the championship, but if everyone agrees and thinks that the NYC Gritty Committee should be allowed to play in the finals as well (every team takes each other on once? The B-Men play TSIVOS in the 1st half and Gritty gets TSIVOS in the 2nd half?), surely no one would complain.
The way this game went, a 64-59 B-Men decision, either team would be a worthy opponent for TSIVOS.
Gritty’s size might give TSIVOS problems, as it did to the B-Men in this one.
Big Bada Hong boxed the B-Men out on his way to 24 points and 12 boards in a monster game. He had 8 in Q1 to set the Gritty tone as they went up 21-15. Kash Miah nearly matched him with 7 solo points for the B-Men, but the B-Men bigs took a beating although Ricky Vein scored twice from within. Dennis Liu, picked up 3 quick fouls in the 1st, and all things indicated that the #1 seed would be flexing their muscle tonight.
The Bearmen’s speed might give TSIVOS problems, as it did to Gritty in this one.
While Bada continued to eat Bearmen for dinner – he scored 14 of Gritty’s 26 points across the 2nd and 3rd – the B-Men utilized their quickness to their advantage.
Miah had plenty to give, Mike Chin started to motor, and the Men were in business.
Wilson Lew was off, and after a Kwon Lim (11 pts, 5 rbs) and 1 with 3:31 left, Gritty held a 9-point advantage, but from there on out, it was all Men, all the time.
Playing without their defensive demon Danny Chin, the B-Men swarmed on defense and slayed on offense.
How Kyu Lee goes is often how Gritty goes and he was bothered in this game to a 1/13 outing, finishing with just 4 points on 1/10 from the arc. The B-Men recognized that and got out on him. (Probably why life was so nice and cozy inside for Hong and Vic Chia who finished with 10 pts, 11 rbs, 4 assts, 2 stls, and 2 blks.)
So, while the B-Men’s back half defense was better (John Park couldn’t get any clean looks either and finished with 8 points and 8 assists, but shot 1/7 from downtown and the team was 2/20), their offense in the 4th, was divine.
Trailing 47-40, the B-Men opened the 4th with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 49-47 as Chin reeled 7 straight points and Miah, normally an outside shooter extraordinaire, started asking for the ball in the post, showcasing his versatility. (Vein, who finished with 13 and 6 was likely wondering what Miah was doing in his area.)
With but a couple minutes left, the B-Men worked themselves into the lead as Lew tapped in a miss from an impossible angle. The lead bounced back and forth a couple of times from there with Miah’s (25 pts, 9 rbs) and 1 and his and Chin’s (17 pts, 8 rbs) free throws at the very end salting it away.
The game was taught, tempers flared. In the end, only one team was left standing. But if TSIVOS shows up next Thursday and sees two teams waiting for them for the Finals, don’t tell you we didn’t warn you. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
