 1/2 Man, 1/2 Crazy 40, Dynasty 37 |
Practice (No Matter How Late Or Little) Makes Perfect |
| January 31, 2008 – New York, NY (DL) – Honestly, it probably helped.
At least one would like to think so.
Just minutes before the game between 1/2 Man, 1/2 Crazy and the Dynasty began, Team Half was cramming in a last second run through with a simple offensive set so that at least all 5 men on the court sorta knew what general direction to go in when the ball was in a certain place.
The players running the set seemed disinterested at best, but if there was any ounce of knowledge that somehow oozed into their brains from it, you bet it probably helped Half to their 40-37 win.
Okay, a tweaked foot Dynasty’s Min Park suffered in the 2nd half may have helped as he could have very well shot Dynasty to victory, but the game is what it is and behind Reza Zarnegar’s 11 points and 7 boards and John Lee’s 10 points, 10 boards, 4 dimes, 2 steals, and 1 block, Half took it.
The 5 minute pre-game practice actually didn’t help at the start of the game for Half as they spent more time running into each other than to the right spots. As a result, they fell behind 12-7 after one and then 19-11 at the half.
Kwon Lim was afire for Dynasty as he had 11 1st half points to match Half’s total alone. Vic Shin kept Half conscious as he scored all 6 of his points in the 1st half, but things didn’t truly take a turn for Half until the back half.
Like a good steak that needs to be marinated, time allowed the play sets to soak into Half’s mind, body, and spirit, and in the 2nd half – they came to play.
Running crisp sets - and often times running period – helped as Half made the 2nd half look like day to the opening half’s night.
On offense, they found their groove with Zarnegar hitting shots down low, Choi hitting the glass and scoring around the tin, and Benny Suh doing damage with two shots and his dimes (4 assists.)
Half opened the 3rd with an 8-2 run, Park went down with his foot sprain, and by the end of the quarter, Half tied it up at 26-all.
The 4th was broken up into three phases.
The first 3 and half minutes was the radio silence phase as both sides came up empty, shooting blanks as if it were going out of style.
The next 4 minutes saw the ice capades end and both sides suddenly got jiggy with John Lee, Lim (game high 15 points, 2 blocks), Kyu Lee (8 boards, 10 turnovers), Zarnegar, Choi, and Brian Kim all trading points from all over the place to result in a 34-33 Half lead with but a minute and change left.
In the final phase of the quarter, despite a Brent Morita (7 pts, 9 rbs, 4 stls) to put a scare in the team, Half executed their half-court set to perfection to claim the game.
Choi (8 pts, 12 rbs) moved to the basket for a strong shot and John Lee, who is looking as smart as any player around, got his due by patiently playing Half’s game and getting to the line twice where he converted 4 free throws late to put a cap on it.
Practice. Look at what it can bring.
