Fury Clinch Double Elim Slot |
| October 10, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – Each time Shawn de los Reyes flirts with a triple double, it’s never a good thing for his opposition.
With a 14 point, 8 rebound, 7 assist (not to mention 3 steal) effort, SDR rendered the X-Men powerless and led the Fury to a 57-40 win in which they pulled away with a 32-14 2nd half. The X-Men managed just 5 total field goals in that half, going 5/16 and dropped their sixth straight game to fall to 1-6.
The Fury (5-3) clinched a double elim spot for the playoffs with the victory and while SDR helped them handle it with ease, it also is rumored to possibly be his final game with the team this season.
What???
Yea, SDR is out for the season finale next week against TSIV due to vacation – and he may miss the playoffs if this vacation goes that well. (Damn, that’d be some kind of vacation!)
Well, while the Fury worry about that when they cross that bridge, on this evening, they watched as SDR sparkled.
He opened the game by hitting his first three shots and his compatriot Chris Youn also scored 6 in the 1st, but the Fury found themselves on the shorter end of an 18-16 score as the X-Men came out firing on all cylinders – something they would eventually lose sight of in the 2nd half.
Gene Kim (13 pts, 7 rbs, 4 stls) deposited 8 points in the 1st and Elitar Kim dropped 5 as the X-Men fought back from a 14-5 deficit as they went on a 13-2 run to close the quarter.
With a quick 6-2 run to open the 2nd – and an overall 19-4 run going back to the 1st – the X-Men scooted ahead 24-18, playing up to the potential that they have, but have rarely maintained in a rough season.
The Fury, however, got back on track and scored 7 unanswered to reclaim a one-point lead that would be what the X-Men ultimately held, 26-25, after Clem Lee scored his third basket of the half before intermission.
It was at this point that the X-Men basically got X’d out.
The Fury fired up their offense as SDR made a couple of athletic buckets, Youn dropped 5, and their rookie Harris Chung, who if he could play the requisite 3 games (but can't) to be playoff eligible would really deepen their bench, dropped a J as a sign of things to come.
The scored stood at 38-31 headed towards the 4th and though that deficit seemed manageable for the X-Men, it was really the beginning of the end.
By amplifying their defense – as well as having SDR rebound, dish, and steal - the Fury forced a flurry of turnovers to start the 4th that broke this game wide open.
A 9-0 blitz with four highlight reel shots – a Youn (17 pts) triple, an SDR MJ-like hanging shot, a Chung (14 pts, 4 stls) steal and score, and then a thunderous dunk on the break by the same man - left the score at 47-31 and the X-Men looking bewildered.
Back-to-back triples by Chung (man got game inside/out) and Peter Song boost the Fury lead to 20 and SDR, who if indeed this was his last game of the season, could walk away knowing his flirting wasn’t done in vain.
There’s a sense, however, that he ain’t done flirting. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
