Cruisers Clinch Double Elimination Card | Chu Brothers Go 2-0 On The Day
|
October 4, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – With not a minute to spare, Cheng, Yeung, Chu, and Chu slapped on the Cruiser threads and lined up for another jump ball, this time, against the fearsome Fury.
Well, maybe the not as fearsome Fury.
No Phil Moon. No Jeff Moy. No Christian Stevens. No Chris Youn.
The Fury’s left over players for this game were hardly anything to sneeze at, but against a Cruiser collection (who was missing Stan Yeung), it wasn’t enough.
With everything on the line (the Cruisers had to win at least one more game to clinch double elim), RL (5-3) ran off with a taught 61-53 victory to secure a double E nod and keep the Fury (4-3) from clinching a slot of their own.
First things first, the four fellows we’re following – Cheng, Yeung, Chu, and Chu combined for 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 7 steals – about what they had in their AL game collectively.
Only thing was, Yeung didn’t see a minute of game-time action, opting instead to mysteriously sit on the sidelines the entire game.
Cheng contributed a couple rebounds and verbal tactics and so it was that the Chu brothers took their winsome ways from the previous game and brought it to this one. But unlike their last game, they had much to say in this one.
Leon and Howie were the first Cruisers to score and they set the tone (not Tony Hu tone) for the game as it was frackentastic basketball early on.
Shawn de los Reyes scored 10 opening period points and Tone (as in Tony Hu Tone) and George Chan combined for as many as the Fury held a 2-point lead after the first.
The Cruiser D limited the Fury to a 2/11 2nd and on their own end, fed Howie for two scores that would help take them to a 25-24 lead at the half.
And speaking of feeding Howie, he was fed once again – along with the other Cruiser bigs – T&G – as 10 of their 11 3rd period points came from the paint and put them atop 38-32.
SDR (20 pts, 13 rbs, 3 stls, 2 blks) and Roger Redhead (14 pts, 7 rbs) were valiant in the 4th, but the Fury just could not keep up.
Just when they thought they had to pack it in as Hu, Chan, and Howie started to take over the game, along came CB Liu (9 pts, 3 stls) with a 3-pointer to open up the lead to 45-39 and then Leon followed with a steal and take that was extra impressive for the way he managed to get it in before a swooping de los Reyes sent it into the 8th row.
T&G kept it real by mixing in some moves from the post some more and then CB and Chan iced the game from the line by hitting a combined 12 of 14 free throws towards the end.
Chan led the Cruisers with 21 points and Hu had 18 points to go with 13 rebounds, but could you count out how important Chu and Chu were to this win with the way they got warmed up just an hour before?
It’s a question as important to them as whether the Hypebeasts will go 9-0. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
