Ren's "Fury" KO's Gen-X |
| September 13, 2007 - New York, NY (DL) - Things sure did not look good for Gen-X as the game started. With only four guys dressed, and none of them named Brandon Chock, it was sure to be an uphill battle against the star-studded New York Fury. Shawn De Los Reyes was missing in action for the Fury...but then again, does it really matter when you have a million other guys on your team who can do just as well? Playing 5 on 4 to start out the game, the Fury surprisingly took a relaxing stance...as if they feel bad for actually having to play 5 on 4. Either that or they thought it was going to be a cakewalk. However, it was actually the opposite...as Gen-X proved to be no easy feat even though they were undermanned. It got to a point where Ren Hsieh just shook his head and screamed at his guys, "Come on, we're playing 5 on 4!" - referring to his team only holding a slim lead even with a man advantage. Eric Chang of Gen-X finally showed up to the game near the end of the quarter and big man Varun Bhartiya quickly followed suit. At near full strength (remember, no Brandon Chock), Gen-X really gave the Fury all they could handle. What had initially looked like doom and gloom for Gen-X, things suddenly started to brighten up. Although guys like Phil Moon (10 pts, 5 rebs) and Christian Stevens (12 pts, 7 rebs) were dominant once again, the combination of Sung-Mo Cho, Danny Hsiao, and Danny Wang brought Gen-X back into the game and even overtook the lead by the end of the third quarter. At this point, Ren was furious...and he clearly showed his frustration on the court. Ren illustrated why he's captain of his team by almost single handedly taking over the game at the end and nailing key jumpers and clutch baskets, including 2 treys in the 4th quarter. But his heroics really showed with his team down by one point in the final seconds of play. Under 10 seconds to go, Ren drove to the hole with the long arms of Robert Schopen draped all over him and eventually converted a difficult double-pumped layup with 0.3 left on the clock. It was a knife in the heart of Gen-X, who had fought hard to get back into the game. A failed "David Lee" lob to Bhartiya for the tip-in was intercepted and the Fury held on to win by the slimmest of margins. But it was probably Ren's "fury" that made the difference. Maybe that's why they're called the Fury? Maybe he should get mad more often... | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
