This One Was For Alfred | Corlears Move to 5-2
| September 27, 2007 – New York, NY (DL) – Alfred Ha, the Corlears’ rookie swingman was so looking forward to this day.
In an expressive moment an hour leading up to the game, Ha told teammate Brian Yang how happy he was to be playing against some of the guys he has looked up to for so long over the seasons as he’s sat side by side to them, helping keep track of stats and the score.
Guys like Jae Ha Hwang, Jerry Tanaka, and Mike Owh.
Well, unfortunately, so it was that come game time that Ha was crushed when he found out that Owh, who has in recent times, gone AWOL, was once again going to be a no show.
And so, he let it be known to his team that they had to crush Bonzai for this and so it was that the Corlears did what Alfred told them to do.
Getting out to an early 17-8 lead in the 1st quarter, the Corlears rode that home to win this one 57-40, winning their fourth game in a row and second of the season against Bonzai (3-3).
Rick Wong got the Corlears off to a hot start with a pair of Wongball specials in the 1st and 2nd quarters each – he wound up with 5 in total for 16 points – and Bonzai was bounced.
With a healthy of mix of Wong outside and Jeff Tu (14 pts, 6 rbs) and Brian Yang (12 pts, 8 rbs) inside, it was all Bonzai could do to plug all the holes that were springing a leak in their defense.
Whether Owh’s frantic perimeter defense might have helped to save the day for Bonzai is entirely unworthy of thinking of. To Alfred, it was simply bush league. All season, he’d waited for this rematch, and for it to be less than what it was billed as, was devastation to him.
And so each of Drew Chen’s 9 points and 4 assists was for Alfred.
Each of Dan Hsu’s 5 steals was for Alfred.
Each time Cliff Su knocked a player down with his huge arms, it was for Alfred.
Mark Kiang played valiantly with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but by the 4th, with Bonzai down 49-34, he was too fatigued, as was the team, and Bonzai could only muster 6 points, practically begging for the referees to end the game 8 minutes early, so listless were they.
When you don’t have your talkative floor general present, that’s what happens.
When you have Alfred mad at you, that’s what happens. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
