| Sean Odou (#40) lit up the Dream League Bay Area All-Stars (DLBA) for 29 points, leading the Tigers Red to 5th Place in a field of 12 in the top AA division at the 32nd Annual Tiger Tournament. DLBA's Nick Wong (#20) broke out of a slump and scored 26 points in defeat. Behind the offense of Wong and Ryan Cruz (#13), DLBA took a 40-37 lead into halftime over the Tigers Red, who came out and shot some blanks before finally heating up. Odou was saddled with 2 fouls early on and had to come out with double digit minutes remaining in the 1st half. Sunny Margate (#72) was doing a good job getting Odou in foul trouble. But in the 2nd half, Michael Hamner (#44) and Tejas Gala (#35) asserted themselves down low, finding out that our interior post defense was not nearly as physical as erroneously reported in the tournament booklet, and certainly not as much of a wall as the Hawaii Chosen Few. Erich Chung (#10) lit it up from outside and had 14 of his eventual 16. Backcourt mate Sam Kumagai (#4) got the ball to the right guys with 4 assists in the 2nd half alone and Odou made his foul shots. Meanwhile, DLBA committed an astounding 13 turnovers in the 2nd half, with Margate ending up with 6 (he had 9 in the previous game). Statistically, it was another decent game by DLBA, but on the court, they just weren't patient enough again. Fatigue had a factor as well. With two 2-guards coming off the bench, I just wasn't able to get a feel for this team this weekend in terms of substitution patterns. We lacked depth and maybe we should have played more zone. But credit Odou and his 29 points. He gave us matchup problems. No one on our team was a good fit to guard him. He was too quick off the first step against the taller Mark Scates (#1) or Margate and he was too tall over Cruz. We had Cruz on him most of the 2nd half. We even had Torrent Lee (#21) on him for a stretch, but he was too tall. It's too bad we are nowhere near in a position to slap a 1-3-1 matchup zone like the Alpine Striders. Against this team, you just have to come with more horses. If not, then you better play ultra-patient offense. We've already learned that twice now being victims to Odou. |
