South Bay Shootout 53, Sugar Beats (Oakland) 44

Sugar Beats Baptized by Shootout in Brickfest

December 15, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Shootout baptized Sugar Beats into the national Elite tournament field, although it was a brickfest for both teams.

The first quarter was marred by 16 total turnovers, 8 by each team. Shootout's JoJo Pierce (#8) got the mortar attack started with a 1-for-6 clanger from the charity stripe, but Shootout held onto an early 11-10 lead. Meanwhile, the Sugar Beats' point-shooter Vince Chooi (#00) committed 3 turnovers, on pace for 12, but he ended up with only 5.

The second frame was a battle underneath as Andre Lockett (#9) of the Sugar Beats grabbed 5 of his 11 rebounds, but Shootout's man in the middle, TJ Hawkins (#7), countered with 2 blocked shots. The Sugar Beats took a 21-13 lead before a bucket by Ryan Mateo (#22) of Shootout. Shootout would then outscore the Sugar Beats 9-2 to head into halftime with the Sugar Beats up 23-22.

In the third, Shootout pulled ahead on two successive runs and never looked back, while the Sugar Beats shot an abysmal 3-for-17. Shootout got off to a 9-0 start on baskets by Pierce and Dennis Jimenez (#20), to lead 31-23. After Lockett cut the lead to 31-25, Shootout went on another 7-point run on a patented Payton-to-Harrison touchdown by Jimenez-to-Mateo, Pierce again, and a trey by seldom-used Leo Garcia (#5). Pierce paced Shootout with 7 of his eventual 17 points.

In the 4th, the Sugar Beats went on their own 7-0 burst with unlikely buckets from center Ken Chen (#00), strong guard John Nasol (#4), and power forward Mark Scates (#11) to cut the lead to 41-34. The closest Sugar Beats got was 42-36 before Mateo connected from inside and outside the arc to give Shootout a more permanent cushion of 46-37.

Rodney Campbell (#44) did his best to lead a Sugar Beats comeback, but shot just 1-for-5 in the 4th, finishing with a subpar 8 points on 4-for-14 shooting, although he pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Pierce regained his touch with 4-for-4 from the line, scoring Shootout's last 6 points to close it out.

The Sugar Beats did not have the services of sneaky inside rebounder Nelson Cruz (#7) or leading scorer David Torres (#0), probably due to work reasons. Shootout had a shortened bench as well, as guard Bobby Hernandez (#24) and 6'5" backup center Archie Sumala (#31) were also unavailable.

Ryan Mateo (#22) tied Pierce with game-high honors with 17 points to go along with 5 steals. Chooi was the only player on the Sugar Beats to reach double-digits with 12.

Pierce had an impressive final line of 17-and-11, but it certainly won't be remembered as one of his best performances, as he shot an uncharacteristic 5-for-12 from the free-throw line and 2-for-8 from downtown. Had he made, say, one more trey and half of his missed throws, he would have had something like 23-and-11.

The win put Shootout in position to win Pool X, while the Sugar Beats would need to beat Ballerz Inc. to have any hope of landing in the top 4 or 5 for the Elite double-elimination playoffs.
