It's So Hard to Repeat |
| LA Showtime Up-ends Shootout's Bid for a Repeat in Vegas
Shootout's Dennis Jimenez at the line late in the 2nd quarter. Seems like Showtime continually held a 7- to 9-point cushion against Shootout. | September 10, 2006
LAS VEGAS, NV -- The young LA Showtime squad led by coach Romeo Convento and his son Lance (#1) at the point held off the volatile streak-shooting South Bay Shootout, 69-60, to win this year's Asian American National Championship in Vegas, preventing Shootout from repeating as champions from last year's cut-throat Vegas foray.
Showtime took a slim 34-28 lead into halftime, despite committing five turnovers compared to only one for Shootout. Shootout's Ryan Mateo (#22) was struggling from the field, going just 2-for-11 on 1-for-8 downtown.
But Lance Convento already had 7 assists by halftime. Forward Ryan Sinson (#44) and big man Scott Domingo (#9) each had 8 points, while guard Kevin Sohn (#21) had 12 going into the intermission.
Shootout narrowed the lead to 48-46 at the end of three quarters, as Showtime committed 6 more turnovers and Mateo and backcourt mate Seve Nocon (#21) hit some threes.
At the start of the 4th, Showtime jumped out to a 56-48 cushion, led by Ryan Reyes (#10) and Domingo. But free throws by Shootout's small forward Jojo Pierce (#8), center T.J. Hawkins (#7), point guard Nocon, and big forward Dennis Jimenez (#20) cut the lead to 58-54.
Unfortunately for Shootout, that's the closest they got. Showtime's youth, athleticism, and height took over. Domingo led the way with 8 of his game-high 21 points, with Reyes scoring 7 of his 18 points, and Convento reaching his tally of 11 dimes in the final frame.
Shootout's Bobby Hernandez (#24) just could not get on track, missing another three treys to end up with a forgettable 1-for-9 from beyond the arc. Yet, despite Shootout's horrific shooting, in which they combined for a paltry and very un-Shootout-like 2-for-13 in the quarter, they still were within reach late in the game.
Shootout's guards, like Seve Nocon, usually are a blur when they attack, but Showtime's effective containment (Ryan Reyes as Kevin Sohn looks on) kept them at bay. | In the absence of outside shooting, Hawkins was still managing to get to the line, with 5 of his 7 rebounds in the 4th alone, but with 40 seconds to go and down by 7, he couldn't connect on the first of two free throws. With 31 seconds left, he was fouled again and missed both from the charity stripe.
The long-armed Rich Cole (#32), who swatted away with 3 of his 5 blocked shots in the deciding 4th, kept the Showtime fans nervous by missing both of his free throws after Hawkins' misses and the ensuing "automatic" foul by Shootout, but the 7-point cushion stayed pat. Sohn sealed the deal with some more free throws in the end to close it out at 69-60.
The championship game revealed that Showtime is one of the few teams that has the height and athleticism to defend against the potential of Shootout's strokin' it from outside, especially with taller guards and Cole behind them. At the same time, Showtime has the patience in ballhandling, balanced by the post moves of Domingo, and capable scorers at nearly every position so that when Convento can go 0-for-6 with only 2 points, he can also dish out 11 assists.
Showtime started the AANC with a 57-46 win over San Diego, then an 80-45 drubbing of the Hawaii Phenoms, followed by a 14-point loss to Driven. Then on Sunday they were the fortunate recipients of a free pass into the quarterfinals thanks to a forfeit by Jumpmen, which they parlayed into a buzzer-beater against the Las Vegas Aces. Then came the impressive close out of 3GS in the semifinals. Their #5 seeding for Sunday is a testament to the caliber of the AANC.
For Shootout, it was still an impressive run in a field they rarely see. Coming off a Filipino championship at Raffy's 13th Annual Walnut Creek tournament and a surprise appearance and awe-inspiring "shootout" against a reloaded Setai Cossa, Shootout had entered the AANC with an estimated 8 straight tournament wins.
After typical double-digit pool play disposals of the West Coast Stunners and Jumpmen, Shootout faced its first test of adversity against the steamrolling 3GS squad from West Covina, which they lost in double overtime. In the quarterfinals they took care of business against an undermanned Dream League All-Stars and reasserted their control over Driven in the semifinals.
So when all was said and done, Shootout has recorded about a 12-2 record over the past three tournaments, with one of those losses in double overtime.
They'll be remaining at the top of the rankings despite not winning this particular championship.
NOTES: Showtime actually committed 10 more turnovers than Shootout, 15-5, but Shootout was outrebounded 40-24...Shootout shot just 31% from the field and a very uncharacteristic 23% from downtown...Both teams were in foul trouble in the 4th and neither team really won the free throw contest as both teams missed a total of 7 from the line.
