Driven Wins Wild Overtime Battle Against Catz

May 21, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Driven won a wild sudden death overtime battle against the Wildcatz to earn a trip to the championship and stun the Catz, preventing them from vying for their third straight NL title.

The Wildcatz were in control in the 3rd quarter with a 40-30 lead, but Carlo Lacsamana scored 8 consecutive points for Driven and teammates Ryan Cruz and KJ Rosales added some more to cut the lead to 43-40.

In the 4th, Sean Caiola finally took a couple shots for Driven and made 2 treys, followed by a couple more Lacsamana threes and a critical field goal by captain Sunny Margate. For the Wildcatz, it was Will Wagner leading the push and a clutch shot by Gary Chern, but Wagner would commit his 6th personal foul with about a minute remaining. Dave Hiroshima made the Wildcatz last two points as the game went deadlocked 67-67 into overtime.

Rosales got a steal and layup to start things off for Driven in the first OT while the Wildcatz' Teraz Lee also got on the board. With just 10 seconds remaining and Driven up 63-61, Margate, who had already missed two free throws, made 1-of-2 from the line to give Driven a 64-61 lead. Chern came back on the other end and got fouled, but he would also miss 1-of-2 and Driven was again up two, 64-62. The Wildcatz immediately fouled Margate again, who this time would atone with both made free throws to widen the lead to 66-62 with 0:09 left on the clock. Lee would then make the first of two heroic three-pointers, which cut the lead to 66-65 with 0:05 on the clock. Caiola was fouled on the inbounds and missed the first free throw! He made the second to put the lead at 67-65. Chern then came down the lane and made an amazing runner at the buzzer to send the game into double-OT.

In the 2nd overtime, Chern got the tip to teammate Jeremy Brady, who then got fouled on a layup attempt. Brady would miss both free throws. This time, Driven went to their rising young all-star Ryan Cruz, who would draw fouls on Chern and Hiroshima. Driven was up 70-67 with about 5 ticks left. The Wildcatz, who had saved up their timeouts and still had 1 remaining, called timeout and moved the ball up to halfcourt. Lee inbounded and got the ball back, immediately hitting the trey from the NBA stripe with 0:03 left on the clock. Lacsamana missed the desperation trey in return, and Lee's 2nd heroic shot from downtown sent the game into triple overtime.

In the sudden death triple OT, Caiola got past a defender and dished to Margate, who got off his patented quick layup to end the game. With Wagner on the bench, there was no weakside interior help on the play. Also, curiously for the Wildcatz, Mike Reding had no shot attempts in all three overtimes and was held to just 12 points.

The triple overtime was the second in a row on Championship Sunday, May 21. The Wildcards had beaten the Sugar Beats in the AL-Premier sudden death just prior to this game.

It was the first time an NL game had ever gone into triple OT. In its four years of existence, Dream League has only had a handful, probably four, games decided by the third sudden-death overtime.
