Driven 72, Play Hard II 57

Re-Inspired Play Hard Runs Out of Gas

May 7, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Following its stunning defeat of Game Time earlier in the day, Play Hard entered the 4th quarter against Driven down only 48-44, but then didn't score its first field goal of the final frame until 3:50 remaining. By then, Driven's Sunny Margate and Ryan Cruz had put the game out of reach.

Cruz led all scorers with a dominant 13-for-16, 30-point game. Margate actually missed his first 7 shots, including two free throws, as he entered halftime scoreless, but he was unstoppable in the 3rd and 4th quarters, racking up all of his 15 points after the break.

The lone bright spot for Play Hard was center Yih-Wei Chien, who went 8-for-8 including a three-pointer as the shotclock wound down, finishing with 20 points. Later in the week following the game, Chien disclosed that he was recruited by Game Time to join their squad. It should be a good fit as Game Time lacked the inside presence, yet still managed to post a decent regular season showing, with less than a full squad available in the upset loss to Play Hard in the playoffs.

Play Hard sharpshooter Jay Pattugalan went down with a sprained ankle in the Game Time game. Meanwhile, Jeremy DelaCruz and Carlos Gacula had subpar shooting. Gacula was just 6-for-14 for an uneventful 12 points. DelaCruz had a Jekyll-and-Hyde effect from the earlier triple-double performance against Game Time. He scored just 2 points on 1-for-14 shooting and 0-for-8 from downtown.

Driven's starting point guard Sean Caiola was also out with a sprained ankle.
