| DelaCruz Triple-Doubles Play Hard Past Game Time
May 7, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- With the last few triple-doubles in Dream League featuring players who just barely got 10 assists or rebounds, Play Hard's Jeremy DelaCruz smashed the triple-double barriers with 27 points, 11 assists and 13 rebounds to lead his team to an unlikely playoff win over Game Time. Play Hard center Yih-Wei Chien also added 26 points on 9-for-13 from the field.
However, it was DelaCruz, Carlos Gacula, and Jay Pattugalan who led the way what would become the decisive 2nd quarter, when Play Hard outscored Game Time by 10 points to take a shocking 42-30 halftime lead. In that quarter, Gacula scored 9 of his 19 points, DelaCruz dished out 5 of his 11 assists, and Pattugalan connected on 2 of his 4 three-pointers.
Still, Game Time managed to cut the lead to 49-41 at one point, despite starting the third quarter 0-for-5 through the first two minutes. Johnny Liu, Mike Kraus, and Ryan Susanto fired salvos of shots and posted impressive numbers, but it was Chuck Leung who kept Game Time in the game. At one point, he made 5 straight treys to help Game Time cut the lead to 79-76.
In the end, DelaCruz and Chien combined for all 29 of Play Hard's 4th quarter points. Game Time simply could not adjust to the one-two punch that took Play Hard 7 previous games to finally exploit.
Alas, Game Time will get the last word. Later in the week following Play Hard's eventual loss to Driven, Chien was recruited to play with Game Time, marking the second time Game Time has benefitted from the commissioner's "expansion team" plans. Last season, Susanto was picked up for Dream League's traveling All-Star team (which, incidentally, won the Sacramento Barons tournament behind MVP Kraus earlier in the day) and subsequently recruited by Game Time for this season. The league office is, however, pleased to see NL-caliber talent stay nurtured in the NL, even if that means creating expansion teams when needed to keep the boat afloat.
Meanwhile, with more NL teams returning for the summer session, Play Hard and the Rayguns will likely regroup and merge. Surprisingly, both teams combined for 5 players in the top 10 in scoring, rebounds, and assists, along with the top 2 spots in field goal percentage, steals, and blocked shots. The cellar dwellers have realistic promise. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
