| Lacsamana Guns Down Play Hard
April 23, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Carlo Lacsamana went 6-for-10 from downtown, including 15 of his 30 points in the 3rd quarter as Driven edged Play Hard, 89-87, in the play-in round of the NL playoffs.
Play Hard, which was without the services of off-guard Chris Hong, couldn't rotate in time as the quicker Driven found Lacsamana open, who came through in spectacular fashion.
Still, Play Hard had a chance to tie in the end, spearheaded by a rally led by Jeremy DelaCruz, who hit 3 treys and dished out 3 of his 10 assists in the final 6:00.
With less than 2 minutes to go, DelaCruz got a long rebound and stepped back to hit a one of his patented threes with no one under the basket to cut the lead to 84-81. After a made field goal by Driven's Dan Matsumara, who stepped up in the supporting role with 15 points, DelaCruz launched another trey that was an airball, but center Yih-Wei Chien got the putback to make it 86-83 in favor of Driven. DelaCruz then inadvertently fouled Driven point guard Sean Caiola, not knowing Play Hard was in the penalty. Caiola made one of two and with another one of several made jump shots by Play Hard's Carlos Gacula followed by two free throws by Lacsamana, Play Hard had the ball with about 8 seconds remaining trailing 89-87.
As the primary ballhandler, DelaCruz was the go-to guy on the final play. He managed to weave his way around for a three-point attempt, but drew iron. Power forward Dave Chen got the rebound, but his putback banked off badly and Driven escaped with the win.
After a season in which they struggled to make some games simply competitive, DelaCruz's spark of energy had to be huge ray of hope for Play Hard, which still has one life remaining in the double-elimination brackets. They will await the highest seed that will eventually fall to the Losers Bracket (unless it is Driven again, in which case we would rotate the matchups), to be played on 5/7.
Notes: Driven shot 16-for-18 from the line...Caiola missed a double-double by 1 assist...DelaCruz missed a triple-double by 3 rebounds and actually led the team with 7 rebounds, a relatively low number probably due to their good shooting (55.2 percent)...Play Hard didn't attack the rim as much, leading to the huge disparity in free throws despite the small difference in fouls committed...Play Hard's Jay Pattugalan was 7-for-10 on treys...From downtown, it was basically Lacsamana and Caiola (10-for-17) versus Pattugalan and DelaCruz (12-for-20), a formidable matchup that Lacsamana/Caiola won in terms of accuracy and putting the pressure on the other team to answer back...DelaCruz also opened the game up down low for Chien, who was a solid 8-for-13 in the post...Play Hard should actually go small from here on out if Hong returns to the lineup, to match up against guard-heavy teams like Driven (Matsumara took advantage of Play Hard's forward-on-guard defensive liability), Game Time, and the East Bay Cardinals -- they could also matchup big against the Wildcatz assuming the frontline of Teraz Lee and Will Wagner starts...Gacula went 9-for-13 for an almost effortless 19 points, but just 0-for-3 from beyond the arc...A multi-talented and long speedster, if Gacula could just figure out what he wants to do each time down the court, he would be a perennial MVP candidate...Sometimes he stops and dishes down low, only to have the ball tipped away by Chien's defender, or he will defer to DelaCruz or Pattugalan...Once he figures out he can change the game with his talent and athletic ability, he should take more stop-and-pops (the way his midrange was going, he should have taken 26 shots instead of 13 and probably would have ended up with around 37 points) or just draw fouls with pump fakes, and ditch the unreliable three-point jumper. | Score by Quarters | Team | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 | OT | Total |
