| Playoffs Get Underway 4/9
APRIL 6, 2006 -- We had a three-way tiebreaker in the South to determine the first round matchups. Skillz That Killz won the head-to-head tiebreaker with a combined 2-1 record against both Aball and the Boondocks. Aball was next with a 1-1 record, while the Boondocks were at 1-2.
Therefore, the Boondocks were saddled with the S#4 seed which requires them to face the N#5 seed (the Hustlers), with the winner advancing on the same day for the right to play against N#1 (the Piston Hondas). Unfortunately for the Boondocks, the location of the game was dictated by the #1 seed, so they are actually playing on the Hustlers homecourt. Even if the Boondocks lose, they still have double-elimination status.
On the other side of the bracket, neither the N#4 T.L Bombers or S#5 San Jose Vikings have double-elimination status, so the loser will go home and the winner will face S#1 Ryusei. Unfortunately for TLB, the location of the game was dictated by the #1 seed, so they are actually playing on the SJ Vikings' (but also Ryusei's) homecourt.
In other Round 1 games, Skillz That Killz draws SFFD while Up In Smoke draws Aball. Here are some previews:
Boon at Hustl: Boon needs c Alvin Lomotan for rebounds, otherwise it's too much for the scrappy Eric Collado to handle all by himself. Boon's shooting pct is not that good, so rebounding is essential. May simply come down to which team's guards turn the ball over the least. Winner-Boon/Hstl at Pstn: sf Junius Ho and pf Jerome Velasco clean up the boards down low and sg Howie Dee is scoring at a consistent pace from outside, so all cylinders are humming for Piston, who look very tough to beat right now. TLB at SJV: Both teams struggling at shooting outside and finishing down low all season long, but SJV struggling more than TLB. TLB guards might be a little too scrappy for SJV. SJV has to hit from outside and limit turnovers. Winner-TLB/SJV at Ryu: pf Jon Kwok has been lighting it up all season long from outside. Neither TLB or SJV really has anyone to defend him, but if somehow Kwok has off night or is able to be contained, Ryu would be forced to 2nd and 3rd options, which they are sometimes not comfortable with. sf Jimmy Hom has had better seasons, but if he steps up for Kwok where needed, Ryu can go deep into brackets. Abll at UIS: Aball might be better than their record indicates, with 2-point loss to Ryu and 4-point loss to Piston, but they lost to UIS in a head-to-head by 6. UIS sg Gerrick Ong has been the catalyst all season and his physical play could bother Aball's leader Mark Fang. UIS a bit stronger from outside with Lloyd Aguirre and Brian Velasquez, but Aball support players better down low with Josh Lim and Doug Murai. Mirror opposite teams, evenly matched. Both may be stronger than the STK/SFFD matchup. SFFD at STK: STK like Jekyll and Hyde, with losses to Boon, TLB, and mere 4-point win over SJV, while SFFD has two wins over last-place SJV plus 11-point win over STK on 3/26. Flip a coin. SFFD bigger inside, but STK has more mobility.
