Payments, Scheduling, Theft, T-shirts, Stats
MARCH 8, 2006 (9:00AM) -- We are currently awaiting gym confirmations for 3/12. Speaking of which, here's how the process goes and why we've been saddled with week-by-week scheduling -- it has pretty much become a fact of life with Dream League, but the good news is, we've usually been able to accommodate each team's tipoff requests. It usually takes about 24 hours to compile a draft of what the schedule might look like in terms of known gym, scorekeeping, and referee availability. It then takes about 24 hours to confirm the gym, another 24 for scorekeepers, and another 24 for referees. During this time we may get several tipoff or bye requests that can alter the structure of the schedule, which could add 12-24 hours more. Basically for each week of games, it takes about 3 days.
Let's keep in mind the big picture. With 64 teams spread across a variety of geographies and talent levels, this is not your garden-variety league. We have made things more complicated for us because we are striving to have as much parity as we can in each division, limiting each to about 8 teams, which means comingling teams from different regions, which means coordinating multiple locations. Based on past observations of our playoff contenders, we think this strategy has worked. The only times when it hasn't were when new teams we've never seen before either wanted to be or were placed in the wrong division -- usually unavoidable in any league, even the NBA (perhaps worst in the NBA, if you think about it!). This is still happening even now, but the cream of the crop still seems to make our playoffs more exciting than the average league.
Team Payments. FEBRUARY 24, 2006 -- Team payments have been updated. Captains have been advised to let their teammates know that unpaid fees will continue to go up by at least $1 each week. The minimum number of roster spots paid must equal at least the number of games played, otherwise the team will automatically forfeit that game. Remaining Season Scheduling. Aside from any inter-conference or similar weeks where matchups are based on standings, we are already underway with finishing off the tipoff times for 3/5 and onward. Every week, we seem to get a handful of last minute requests, usually requests that are too late to accommodate. TO ALL PLAYERS, PLEASE BE A LITTLE MORE PRO-ACTIVE: Help your team out by checking your calendar now and seeing which weekends and tipoff times don't work for you. Letting your captain know at the last minute is only hurting yourself and your team. All requests to the league must come directly from captains. Safety and Theft. If you haven't noticed, our gyms are mostly located next to lower-income neighborhoods. We have already had two reports of theft from stray kids in the gym or car windows being broken. At BCRC, we have added a security person when the gym director is not there. You must be vigilant and use common sense when in such areas. Don't learn the hard way. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN CLEAR SIGHT AT THE GYM. KEEP YOUR GYM BAG CLOSE TO YOU AND YOUR TEAMMATES AT ALL TIMES. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES SHOWING IN YOUR VEHICLE. PARK AS CLOSE TO THE GYM AS POSSIBLE. T-Shirts. FEBRUARY 22, 2006 -- The Dream League braintrust just got back from an fun-filled all-star weekend (and tournament) in Houston -- should be an absolute blast next year in Vegas! Back at home here in the Bay, t-shirts for this season will be delayed by 1-2 weeks as we catch up on recording all team/player payments. Stats. Special thanks to Mark Chin of Grey Goose (AAA-Elite), who will be heading up our newly revamped teenage and player volunteer online stats crew. Contact us if you want to help out. Stats should be getting up here and there within the next week or two, which means we are about 3-4 weeks behind. Sorry about that! |
