2008__Summer/Fall AAA REC (Oakland/SF/Peninsula/SJ)

A/R-SFJ season schedule roadmap

11/5/2008 2:30PM

A/R-SJ PLAYOFFS

(scroll down for A/R-SFRWC playoffs)

WED 11/5 (12:30PM) -- In the A/R-SJ Playoff Bracket, #1 Make It Rain is the survivor of the Winners Bracket and has a one-game advantage (in the double-elim format) over the eventual survivor of the Losers Bracket.

So the Last Losers Bracket Game occurs on 11/9 with #3 SJ Jollybee vs the #2 Benchwarmers. The winner of that will advance immediately to face #1 Make It Rain, also on 11/9. Here it is for 11/9...

sw-p4-LB: #3 SJ Jollybee at #2 Benchwarmers
sw-p4-Champ: Winner-SJJB/Bnch at #1 Make It Rain

Should Make It Rain lose on 11/9, we would come back with a Repeat Championship on 11/16.

Don't forget that we'll try to have a "Superbowl" of sorts with additional games against the champions of the SFRWC and OAK. This may occur on 11/6 as the back-end of a doubleheader. Remember, these are "bonus" games. And I need to finish up the season before the gyms close.

A/R-SFRWC PLAYOFFS

WED 11/5 (2:30PM) -- I just calculated the commutes for Encore, Highlife, and Full Tilt, who are now stuck in the same bracket. It turns out that Encore has had the most average miles per game, so we will play these games at SQHM on 11/9, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Here are the results by week. Note that Encore has only played in 9 games whereas High and Tilt have played in 10. Also, it's 26 miles to get from SF to SQHM (and vice-versa). We do this like how the IRS calculates commute mileage: your homecourt commute is zero. Encore had to travel to CSM from their usual homecourt of SQHM one time...

Encr 26, 10, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 26, which equates to 6.9 mi/wk
High 0, 0, 26, 0, 0, 26, 0, 0, 0, 0, which equates to 5.2 mi/wk
Tilt 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 26, 0, 0, 0, which equates to 2.6 mi/wk

WED 11/5 (12:15PM) -- In the A/R-SFRWC Playoff Bracket, the lower-seeded L'Unis and Wolverines advanced to a Winners Bracket survivor showdown on 11/9. I heard that A/R MVP-candidate (well, if we had such an award!) Derek Lau was not there for Highlife in their loss to the Wolverines, which pretty much shows you how important he is to the team. Duane Bell stepped up with 30+ pts in his absence, but the Wolverines managed to send Highlife to the Losers Bracket.

In the Losers Bracket, #1 Full Tilt is the highest seed, so they get to wait for the winner of #5 Encore vs #2 Highlife. Right now, it looks like the game will be played in SF due to overall season commute (I don't really go by high seeds anymore, so I need to doublecheck that this is the right thing to do -- still, we might be over-capacity at SQHM which would make it a moot point).

So the Losers Bracket survivor from 11/9, be it Full Tilt, Highlife, or Encore, will then face the loser of L'Unis vs Wolverines on 11/16. Then the winner of that will play the winner of L'Unis vs Wolverines in the championship, still on 11/16. That's the advantage of surviving the Winners Bracket. Should the winner of L'Unis/Wolverines lose on 11/16, we would have a Repeat Championship, due to the double-elim format, on 11/23.

So here's what we got for 11/9 in the A/R-SFRWC...

p-p3-WB: #4 L'Unis at #3 Wolverines AAA
p-p3a-LB: #5 Encore at #2 Highlife
p-p3b-LB: Winner-Encr/High at #1 Full Tilt

WED 10/29 (12:30PM) -- In SF/RWC, the only team in the Losers Bracket is Encore, so they will take a bye on 11/2 and await two more teams from the Winners Bracket to fall. On 11/9, the three Losers Bracket teams will become one, with the lowest seeds playing each other first, then the winner playing the highest seed out of the three.

Mathematically, Encore will have the lowest seed in the Losers Bracket on 11/9, therefore they should know that they will have a potential doubleheader on 11/9. So anyways, we'll have one team left in the Losers Bracket.

In the Winners Bracket, we will also have one team left after 11/9. So on 11/16, the team that got knocked out of the Winners Bracket from 11/9 will face the survivor of the Losers Bracket from 11/9. The winner of that will then have the right to face the Winners Bracket survivor in the championship, also on 11/16 -- i.e., the Losers Bracket survivor will have played a doubleheader. Should the Winners Bracket survivor lose that game, then we will have a repeat championship on 11/23.

WED 10/29 (12:15PM) -- In SJ, what we'll call the Southwest playoffs, we have 3 teams in the Losers Bracket, so the highest seed, #3 SJ Jollybee, gets to play the winner of #6 Underworld vs #4 Mojojojo. I'll have the brackets up soon so you can visualize this. In the Winners Bracket, it's simple: #2 Benchwarmers vs #1 Make It Rain.

Next week on 11/9, you will see that the loser of Benchwarmers vs Make It Rain will play the survivor of Underworld, Mojojojo, and SJ Jollybee. The winner of that will then face the winner of Benchwarmers vs Make It Rain in the championship.

If the Losers Bracket survivor should defeat the Winners Bracket survivor on 11/9, despite having played a doubleheader, we will have a repeat championship on 11/16. So we might very well wrap up by next week.

TUE 10/21 (9:45PM) -- Before I talk about the matchups for 10/26, let me reiterate what happened last week that resulted in my decision to split the A/R-SFJ into San Jose and SF/RWC. We basically had too many games to schedule in RWC, the neutral site between SJ and SF. That also left the SJ gym practically barren. It wouldn't have been logistically feasible to put my scorekeeping staff in RWC, and it wouldn't have been politically kosher to reserve the SJ gym for only two games. This, I could not foresee. So here were are.

SouthwestWLPCTGB
Make it Rain701.000--
Benchwarmers430.5713.0
SJ Jollybee430.5713.0
Mojojojo430.5713.0
Raging Rickshaws250.2865.0
Underworld070.0007.0
In the Southwest, we had a 3-way tiebreaker at 4-3 between the Benchwarmers, SJ Jollybee, and Mojojojo. We found out that in the head-to-head combined record involving all three teams, the Benchwarmers beat SJJB and split with Mojojojo to go 2-1 in the head-to-head, SJJB beat Mojo but lost to Bnch for a 1-1 record, and Mojo split with Bnch and lost to SJJB for a 1-2 record.

That was a pretty significant tiebreaker for the Benchwarmers because it afforded them a first-round bye as the #2 seed.

On 10/19, as #1 MIR and #2 Bnch sat idle, the higher seeds of the remaining "play-in" teams held form as #3 SJJB beat #6 Underworld and #4 Mojojojo beat the #5 Raging Rickshaws.

So, with all 6 teams entering the playoffs with double-elimination status, we have this for 10/26...

sw-p2-WB: #4 Mojojojo at #1 Make It Rain
sw-p2-WB: #3 SJ Jollybee at #2 Benchwarmers
sw-p2-LB: #6 Underworld at #5 Raging Rickshaws

Note that the loser of Underworld vs Raging Rickshaws, being in the Losers Bracket, will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Btw, much like the 6FT-SFJ, I am still planning a "Superbowl" of sorts between the 3 champions: SF/RWC, SJ, and OAK. Subject to budgetary concerns, it will either be a 2-game or 3-game set to determine the "Superbowl" winner. And it's for pride. I do not have the budget to create a unique championship award. In fact, I effectively increased the award expenses by splitting the A/R-SFJ into segregated SF/RWC and SJ championships.

The 8-team Pacific Conference consisting of just AAA-REC teams from SF and RWC is pretty straightforward. Last week for the 8th and final regular season game, we simply repeated matchups with the 1st- and 2nd-place teams, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th, and 7th and 8th.

All tiebreakers were determined by head-to-head matchups. Highlife gets the nod over the Wolverines, L'Unis over Encore, and the Eagles over SFFA.

So the matchups in Playoffs Round 1 for the SF/RWC teams are as follows...

p-p1: #8 Bayside Tigers at #1 Full Tilt
p-p1: #7 SF Free Agents at #2 Highlife
p-p1: #3 Wolverines AAA at #6 Eagles
p-p1: #4 L'Unis at #5 Encore

I still have yet to set the homecourt for the Eagles and Encore games in stone. Quite frankly it depends on the unusually barren situation in SF. Otherwise, all things being equal, here's how the commutes have looked...

Wolverines: 2 trips to RWC, 6 at home
L'Unis: 3 trips to RWC, 5 at home
Encore: 1 trip to SF, 7 at home
Eagles: 1 trip to SF, 7 at home

If SF has enough gym space available, I will probably keep the Wolverines and L'Unis at home.

WED 10/15 (6:45PM) -- Matchups for 10/19 have been pinned.

THU 10/8 (10:45PM) -- Pinned matchups for Southwest for 10/12. Mojojojo gets to try and clinch double-elim playoff status with a win over 5th-place Raging Rickshaws. Same thing with SJ Jollybee against 6th-place Underworld. But then the Benchwarmers already clinched with a big win last week vs Mojojojo.

THU 10/1 (8:45AM) -- Pinned sw 1st thru 6th for matchups based on standings.

TUE 9/9 (9:45AM) -- Here's the season schedule roadmap for REC (finally!). See the Legend, Ground Rules, and Team Lists on the right as well. Email me with any questions...
