2008_Spring/Summer REC (SF/Oakland)

REC Cheep Thoughts from 4/13

4/16/2008 8:00AM

Remember Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey from Saturday Night Live? Well, here's the Bay Area dreamleague's weekly version: Cheep Thoughts. A collection of my thoughts on each game as I go thru the scoresheets and post scores on the website. One-plus minute per game multipled by about 45-50 games and I can knock this beast out in an hour -- yeah right, it always ends up being double. The idea here is that I do not spend hours upon hours of time coming up with game articles...

REC: For like the third straight week, we had a team score only 2 points in the opening quarter and win. Wow. This time it was ACGT, but they only trailed 8-2 after one, so maybe it doesn't really count as a "wow". Jimmy Tran had the opening field goal for ACGT and, 5 periods later in double OT, had the winning field goal to give ACGT a 41-39 victory over the Spartans. Am I reading the scoresheet correctly in that nobody scored anything in the first OT? Philip Bangloy led all scorers with 17 for the Spartans. Tran led ACGT with 10. John Giang with another big day underneath for ACGT with 5 blocked shots... Pete Chong scored 16 points on 7-for-13 from the floor and Ethan Quoch added 17 including 5-for-6 from the FT line and 4 blocked shots as the Warriors routed Bay Function, 45-24. Joe Cheah had 18 points including 2 treys, which might explain why he had the three-point attempt in the AAA-REC game mentioned in the AAA-R Cheep Thoughts (he was feeling it!). The Oakland Warriors got out to a 14-2 1st quarter lead and never looked back. Bay Function was 1-for-13 in the 1st quarter and 3-for-13 in the 2nd, for a combined 4-for-26 (15%) shooting in the first half... What Would Wat Do is back on the winning track with a 53-47 win over Technics. Mualimu Collins once again paced WWWD with 15 points. Who's this Ramsel Ruiz? The newcomer added a quality 9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 blocked shot. Somebody with the first name of "Francis" led Technics with 19 points, a whopping 17 of them in the 2nd quarter alone. I wonder if WWWD employed the Greg Hom rules (hey Greg, it's a compliment -- think "Jordan rules"!!!) and somehow stopped this Francis from much of anything afterwards. Sean Rivera posted 13 points and Michael Tangi, our new scorekeeper btw, added 10 rebounds. WWWD used a 15-8 4th quarter surge to pull away... The SF Warriors used a 21-7 1st quarter to help them beat the Wolverines, 59-50. Joel Villareal had all 12 of his points in the pivotal opening frame... MSG held Faded to just 3 first quarter points and held on to win, 39-30. Tony Chiu with 12 points for MSG. Faded had atrocious shooting: 11-for-59 or just 18% at first glance... Dunjoz demolished The Triple Singles, 47-26. 14-4 after one, 26-8 at the half and that's all she wrote. Brandon Chu with 17 points... So after two straight weeks of ranting and raving about Derek Lau and suggesting that teams somehow go box-and-1 on the guy, absolutely, positively, categorically, catastrophically, hmmm, what's the word? NOTHING changed as Lau hit 10 of his 14 points in the first quarter to help Highlife go up for good 27-7 en route to a 58-29 thrashing of the SF Free Agents. But first things first. At least SFFA had 7 guys and the 8th guy turned out to be injured. So SFFA now has a foundation established. Now they can just go play without having 5 guys go all 36 minutes, or fewer than 5 guys for that matter.

STANDINGS WATCH: Well, sir, I'll tell you what Wat would do, he'd go out and have a beer because What Would Wat Do has officially clinched double-elim status for the playoffs! Then we've got a nice showdown between undefeateds, Dunjoz and SF Warriors, but lo and behold, Dunjoz wanted a bye on 4/20 due to lack of players and with the schedule as tight as it is, I'm unable to grant that bye, so I guess the SF Warriors are huge favorites to win that one. Not that it matters, because both have also clinched double-elim status. Still Ballin's at 2-2, but unfortunately they have to face the mighty Highlife this weekend. Looking ahead, on 4/27 we have the East repeating matchups based on standings, and an intriguing Northwest-Southwest block of games, also based on standings. On 5/4, the five Northwest teams plus the bottom Southwest team face the East, largely based on standings. Then a similar thing happens on 5/11, except it involves the five Southwest plus the bottom Northwest teams. In each of those weeks, the remaining Southwest (on 5/4), then Northwest (on 5/11) teams face each other for an intra-conference repeat based again on standings. We should have top seeds vetted out pretty thoroughly by the start of the playoffs on 5/18. With 16 teams, of which maybe 6 or 7 will have sub-.500 records and thus single-elim status for the playoffs, we might go ahead and proceed with a 16-team bracket. If we have 8 teams under .500, then I'd probably split the brackets up. I'm not sure yet. I think it will depend on gym capacity for June. If gym capacity is not really an issue, I'd probably lean towards the 16-team bracket if we have 7 or less teams with single-elim status, because it's just not as fun a bracket -- in the lower bracket in this example -- if you only have 7 teams, not 8. On the other hand, sometimes it's not fun being #16 and having to face #1, so I might just leave it to a vote of the sub-.500 teams.
