2008 LA Showcase Tourney INT (Los Angeles)

Matchups for INT on Saturday 3/1

2/27/2008 11:00AM

FEBRUARY 27, 2008 (11:00AM) -- We've figured out the gym for INT for Saturday. It will be Bishop Mora Salesian. I can't look it up on the map right now, gotta go take my daughter to the hospital for an appt, but wanted to let you know asap.

FEBRUARY 27, 2008 (8:30AM) -- Welcome to Hollywood! Alright, it's really not so much Hollywood, but LA. Alright, it's really not so much LA, but the West Covina area. Depending on our gym situation, it could even be Pomona or Bell Garden if you're in the 6FT or INT divisions (see the 2/27 posting on the LA Showcase info page.

For the INT division, I have actually finished the schedule for the 2-pool-game format on Saturday (read on or scroll down). But I'm not gonna post tipoffs until the gym situation is resolved.

Btw, because it is harder to run dreamleague's NBA-style format and I only have a couple scorekeepers coming down to LA with me, we will be going with PacRim rules for 6FT (and INT), which is basically 20-minute running halves, college rules, and stop clock in the last minute. There is no shotclock in PacRim rules. Oh yeah, and no individual stats.

There are 2 pools, one which has 3 teams, one which has 4 teams. So that means we have 7 total teams. Bomb Squad (SF) dropped out on Monday. And with the gym situation, it's actually better we have 7 teams because that makes scheduling easier on Sunday.

In the pool with 3 teams, it's easy to come up with the 2 pool play games: just have each team play each other. In the 4-team pool, we will have a mini-final-four so that in the 2nd pool play game, the winners of the 1st games play each other. Likewise with the losers.

Here are the matchups for Saturday, listed in chronological order. I have left tipoff times out pending the gym situation. This could all get blown up if we can't get enough gyms for Saturday, but assuming we can...

Pool V : Implosion (SF) at DreamKillaz (SJ/LA)
Pool U : The 818 (LA) at PacRimJr (LA)
Pool V : WalnutJL at Implosion (SF)
Pool U : West Covina Stunnas at JBallers (LV)
Pool V : DreamKillaz (SJ/LA) at WalnutJL
Pool U : Winner-Stun/JBlr at Winner-818/Pac
Pool U : Loser-Stun/JBlr at Loser-818/Pac

I tried my best to keep familiar teams in different pools, but it was hard because of the special tipoff requests. So here are the special tipoff requests which forced me to put certain teams in the same pool...

Implosion =earlier
Dream Killaz <<4p
The 818 =earlier
WalnutJL =11a-5p

On Sunday, we will have a straight single-elimination 8-team bracket. Actually, it's only 7 teams, so the #1 seed gets a bye the first round. With the 6FT having 14 teams, they will get started early in the morning on Sunday and the INT division will fill in the games in between. Here's how the schedule for Sunday looks (games alternate between 6FT and INT so as not to have back-to-back games)...

play-in-6 -- early in the morning
quarter-Int -- in two different gyms simultaneously
quarter-Int -- in two different gyms simultaneously
quarter-6
semi-Int -- in two different gyms simultaneously
semi-6
champ-Int

Next up: check all rosters for non-Asian names. If your player has an Asian-sounding name but doesn't look Asian, you should email me about that. But quite frankly, I don't expect any glaring issues. I'll post any potential issues here later...

Implosion: three players half Filipino, half white: Mike Salamin, Matt MacDonald, and Josh Beloy. Everyone else is clearly Chinese or Filipino.
