The short answer is because this is what we do.
It’s come to our attention recently that for some weird and mysterious cosmic reason, the month of February is turning into one of those wonky months in which the balance of the DL universe is getting thrown off-kilter a bit.
There seems to be an inordinate amount of so-called holidays going on this month that are interrupting the flow of the league as well as may of the teams’ flow to play with their rosters in full.
Unless you're actually going to be in Arizona, please don't tell us you can't play. |
We’re getting hammered over the head with schedule requests not to play or to move games for the following reasons (or told we should shut down in entirety because):
1) The Super Bowl is this Sunday.
Okay, fine. Hey, we love to watch those commercials as much as anyone else, get together with friends for pizza and beer to fart around, hunker down for a game of poker or Rock Band (who actually pays attention to the game unless it’s their team in it?) But, c’mon folks, the Super Bowl is not like the King’s birthday in Thailand. No need to spend the entire day exalting its virtues. Last we checked, the game isn’t on until 6pm at night. We’re not living in Hawaii. DL games are from 12:30-4pm. If you can’t make your way over to your Super Bowl party by 6pm, you must live in Philadelphia.
2) It’s Lunar New Year on Thursday.
Okay, we give you this one in a big way. A really big way. We’re as Asian as the next guy. To honor and respect familial traditions is completely understandable. Why, then, are we holding games on Thursday?
Year of the rat, yo. |
Well folks, if the NBA has a doubleheader special on Christmas Day, if the NFL has a triple slate of games now on Thanksgiving, if MLB holds 1pm games on Labor Day around the country, the Dream League can hold a tripleheader slate of their own on Lunar New Year!
Notice we didn’t say Chinese New Year. Let’s get with it people! Korean and Vietnamese culture celebrates this holiday just the same as the Chinese do. In Korean, it’s called Sol and in Vietnamese, they celebrate Tet. Interestingly, the Japanese don’t celebrate Lunar New Year as they adopted the solar calendar system in the late 19th century.
So we know what you’re thinking. Schedule the NL’s Super Soul Sonics already! Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, this NL team isn’t playing this season. One of their best players returned to Japan and it was the beginning of the end for them. At least until next season.
3) It’s Valentine’s Day!
Ya’ll are lucky! You better make the most of this. Coincidentally, our gyms are closed the week of this national holiday due to school breaks, so with this, you best get your groove on and impress your honey bunny to no end. If you need a little reminder as to how to treat your gal this year, refer to this article to see how she’s been treating you.
We still ball during leap year. |
4) It’s President’s Day on February 18th.
Gyms are still closed that Sunday, so hey, go off and honor our presidents like there’s no tomorrow.
(Incidentally, if you’re wondering why there is a long lull in your schedule, it’s because of this Valentine's/President’s Day week. With all gyms being closed, it pushes things back, so this is not actually a bye week – everything is just going black for a bit – it only feels like a bye week.)
5) It’s Leap Year this year!
Folks, do you see why we’re getting white hairs?
The Super Bowl, Lunar New Year, Leap Year, we’re troopin’ through ‘cause this is what we do.
Step on or get off. Whatever you do, please don’t make us give you a forfeit. We hate that.
** We had one request for a change due to the Lost season premier, but since that falls in January, we held off from listing it here. Three letters for you buddy: D-V-R.** |
