Bucketz held off ZerOne 46-40. Mitchell Fong led a comeback in the 4th quarter, scoring 10 of his 21 points in the pivotal final frame. ZerOne shot just 4-for-19 in the 4th.
Kurruption defeated the Rising Stars 76-60, holding the Rising Stars to just 7 second-quarter points to build an insurmountable 39-20 halftime lead. Derek Finney tallied 24 points, including 3 treys, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots. Brennan Fong added 11 and Deep Basra collected 10 rebounds and dished out 4 assists in the victory. David Hui led the Rising Stars with 19 points and Alex Mao had 16. They each had 4 three-pointers.
The T.L Bombers defeated TheOcho, 41-32. The injured point guard leader for TheOcho, Scott Kyono, went 0-for-5 from downtown and 0-for-7 overall and finished with just 2 points on free throws and an astoudingly low 2 assists. Delbert Tsoi was the unlikely leading scorer in defeat for TheOcho, with 10 points. Joe Momand scored just 7 points as he missed 6 trey attempts, but still collected 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Kerwin Uy once again led TLB in the scoring column with 20 points and Mike Siv added 14.
San Miguel rudely sent Grey Goose to the Losers Bracket with a 75-44 wallop. It was just 30-21 at halftime when RJ Flores went on a tear and scored 9 in the 3rd and 11 in the 4th, not missing on 7 straight attempts, to finish with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. With his tall, skinny stature, I've said many times that he's the Kevin Garnett of the AAA! Everett Fujii added 17 and Dante Henderson continued his struggles with field goal percentage, going just 4-for-17, although he did grab 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots. Sean Philipps added 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 more blocked shots. Grey Goose would only score 6 points in the 3rd as Dante Riley couldn't hit anything inside, going 2-for-7 after hitting his first 3 buckets going into halftime. He also missed all 3 free throws and finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Sherman Lee also caught the free throw bug, going 0-for-4 from the charity stripe as Grey Goose combined to go 0-for-8 on free throws in the 3rd, as well as just 3-for-13 on field goals. They were outmuscled inside as well with the triumvirate of Flores, Henderson, and Philipps. Mason Chin likewise had a rather subpar 6 rebounds, although he did get 4 steals.
Ballin' kept things rolling with a 64-59 defeat of San Miguel. Ballin' has a high-powered offense, but played without streak shooters Nic Vu and Mike Vu. Still, Shin Iwata led Ballin with 27 points, including 5 treys. Jimmy Yung added 14 points and 8 rebounds, Cam Tran had 13 points, and Steve Trinh added 8 boards. San Miguel kept pace with 20 from RJ Flores, including 4 treys, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks; 16 points and 4 assists from Everett Fujii; and 14 points and 7 rebounds from Sean Philipps. But Dante Henderson couldn't get on track, going just 2-for-15 from the field, despite 6-for-8 from the line.
The Untouchables held off a resurgent Boondocks, 80-75, to advance in the Winners Bracket. Vince Chooi led the Untouchables with 29 points, including 6 treys. James Manalang added 17 and Paul O'Connor had 13, including 4-for-4 from the line in the 4th. Andrew Kim led a valiant Boondock comeback attempt with 11 of his 32 points in the 4th and Tim Villarruz added 12-and-8, but Philip Quitoriano, Puma Phan, and Orville Bagood combined to go just 9-for-31 in defeat, with Quitoriano responsible for a subpar 2-for-11 from the field, 0-for-5 from downtown, and 1-for-3 from the charity stripe. Ryan Barrera had 5 assists for the Untouchables.
Rising Sun outlasted the Barrio Boys, 40-38. The two teams traded bricks in the 1st, as Rising Sun took a laughable 3-2 lead into the 2nd quarter. The 2nd quarter got a little bit better, with a still-laughable 11-10 Rising Sun halftime lead, but things got really interesting in the 3rd and 4th. The Ron Quimel versus Ross Lim show finally got underway, with Lim, after an 0-for-6 performance, scoring 9 points and collecting 5 rebounds. Quimel answered with 5 points. It was 20-20 heading into the 4th. Lim got even hotter in the 4th as he scored 13 more to finish with 22, to go along with 10 rebounds. Quimel scored 11 of his eventual 20 in the 4th. Neither Lim or Quimel really got support from their teammates, although Alex Baumgartner chipped in 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to go along with 2-for-11 from the field. For the Barrio Boys, Joseph Ehling and Sam Kim took turns shooting bricks, as Ehling finished 0-for-6 and Kim just 2-for-9, including 4-for-8 from the free throw line. But it was Chung Vuong who would finally make a difference for Rising Sun, closing out the game with 2 field goals in support of Lim. However, Vuong shot just 4-for-12 overall.
RNG made clutch free throws in the 4th to hold off Fortune Crew, 53-49. RNG had a buffer of 26-17 at the half, which Fortune Crew narrowed to 38-34 at the end of the 3rd, thanks to a buzzer-beater trey by Paul Chea on an assist from Randall McKinney, but missed out on key opportunities in the 4th. Early in the 4th, James Le hit a shotclock-beating three-pointer to cut the deficit to 39-40. With under 2:00 to go, Chris Tran was at the line for Fortune Crew, but missed one of two free throws that would have cut the lead to one possession. Fortune Crew made a couple of NBA-format mistakes in the closing minute. They called college after-made-basket timeouts, but in the NBA, you foul after a made bucket because the clock stops on a made basket (well, okay, sometimes our scorekeepers don't get this right and you should make sure the ref enforces it to the max of his ability even though he's not at the scoreboard controls, but if you see Commish at the controls, by all means you should adhere to the NBA format!!!) and use the timeout to advance the ball to halfcourt on the ensuing possession, thereby saving at least 5 seconds apiece for not having to dribble the length of the court. Brent Natsume made a living at the line for RNG, going an NBA-like 16-for-17, totaling 28 points. Chea led Fortune with 17. Ultra-quick point guard Bryan Nguyen added 13, but missed his last 6 attempts from the field. Tran led Fortune with 13 rebounds, 7 of them in the 4th.
The Colonizers sent Frosh Tryouts 2007 to the Losers Bracket with a 56-49 victory. Bao Le spurred the Colonizers in the 4th with 8 of his 10 points. Vince Lau led them with 22 points. Mark Pasadilla led Frosh with 15 points and 8 rebounds. James Aragon added 15 in defeat, although he shot just 7-for-22.
