How To Get Your Stats by Each Thursday

JUNE 21, 2006 -- The league office has announced that players who stay after their game and help us compile stats from their game will get their stats up within 3-and-half days instead of the standard 6 or more days (see Scheduling FAQ: "How long does it take for you to post game stats?").

Special thanks to Mark Chin, who has been managing Dream League's postgame statcrew, for giving the green light on this "project".

HERE'S HOW TO GET YOUR STATS BY THURSDAY INSTEAD OF SATURDAY:

(1) Play in your regularly scheduled game.
(2) Take a 15-minute rest after the game or however long it takes you to wind down.
(3) Approach the scorekeeper's table and ask to compile the stats from the last game.
(4) The head scorekeeper will show you how to do it, probably at the 1st-quarter break or halftime.
(5) Put your name in the upper right hand corner of the statsheet.
(6) Any blatant stat discrepancies shall be noted by you in the margins.
(7) All statsheets must be 100% complete for us to give it higher priority.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How hard is it compile the stats?
Not hard at all. The most difficult thing is knowing that a three-pointer attempted is also, by definition, a field goal attempted. If you already knew that, then you're pretty much qualified as long as you know how to count and write.

How long will it take me?
Maybe 20 minutes if you're brand new or 10 minutes if you become good at it.

I'm pretty tired and sweaty after a game. How do you expect us to do this?
That's why we have Step #2 above: Take a 15-minute rest after your game or however long it takes you to wind down. If you really can't help us out post-game, then don't worry about. There is no obligation. You can only help your stats get online, you can't hurt the process.

So if I do this, when will my stats get posted?
By Thursday instead of Saturday. Normally, stats are entered onto the website in somewhat random fashion. Sometimes there are bigger problems and stats get delayed even further. Now, we'll take a look at which stats are already pre-compiled (by you) and move those to the head of the line.

What if my opponent has already volunteered to compile stats after the game?
Then you're in luck. However, one of these weeks, your opponent probably won't be able to do it. Also, if you haven't done one in awhile, maybe you want to tap the guy on the shoulder and see if you want to give him a break by doing them this week. Basically, this is a community-oriented thing. Let's help each other out when we can. It's like filling out your lineup before the game -- everybody pitches in for the greater good.

Aren't you worried about people fudging their stats?
Not really, because...

(a) you have different handwriting than the scorekeepers,
(b) you'll have a different pen than the scorekeepers,
(c) it's impossible to fudge points scored in our system,
(d) our system employs checks and balances on all stats, and perhaps most importantly
(e) a couple of assists, missed free throws, turnovers, or rebounds WILL NOT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE WHEN THE STATS ARE CALCULATED OVER THE ENTIRE SEASON.

How does your system have checks and balances to prevent fudging?
It goes something like this: Our system of tallying points is nearly foolproof, which means our system of tallying shots attempted is somewhat foolproof, which means rebounds and assists can't really be fudged because the total number of rebounds cannot exceed the total number of shots missed and likewise the total number of assists cannot exceed the total number of shots made. Steals and turnovers can also be extrapolated to a certain reasonable degree of accuracy. Blocked shots might be harder to ascertain, but luckily we usually remember who are the league's great shotblockers anyways.

What if I really had two assists and I swear to God that the scorekeepers missed them?
Hey, this is a great way to encourage you to compile your own stats postgame, huh? Well, if you're adamant about those two assists, then write something in the margin of the scoresheet and we will consider researching your claim. That's the best you can hope for at that point. There are few things to understand as we research a claim:

(a) don't forget what you're saying at this point is, your memory along with everything else that is going on during the game (physical and mental) should over-ride what someone else is watching with pen, paper, and an objective eye,

(b) if you did not fill out your lineup to perfection, you only have yourself to blame for any faulty stats,

(c) if you had any players without legal jerseys (even one player with an illegal jersey can cause a chain reaction of faulty stats), you have only yourself to blame, and

(d) keep the big picture in mind: points scored are nearly foolproof and a couple of wrong stats here or there will not make a big difference when the stats are calculated over the entire season.
