_ _ _ - _ _ in the House!!!
AUGUST 18, 2005 -- Yes, the rumors are true. Aside from our media sponsor AsianWeek, which will run a story about the tournament and its champions around September, "you-know-who" will be paying a visit to Doolittle Community Center on Sunday for our championship!
Alas, we've been told that we're not supposed to use their logo or write about it. Write about what? Who? AZN TV at the Year of the Yao? Nah, not that one, the other one! You know...
"Television coverage of Dream League is not only very exciting, but very appropriate. Competitive, high-quality, high-caliber Asian American basketball has been going on in the U.S. for over 50 years," said Rich Twu, Executive Director and "commish" of Dream League.
"The close-knit community and invaluable friendships that have developed over this time through competitive basketball -- from old veterans with reputations to up-and-coming phenoms with a buzz about them, from team dynasties to cellar-dwellers, from star players who played college ball to team managers who put themselves on the roster as the 10th man -- are probably very much akin to pro basketball's own community and legacy."
Special thanks go out to Grace Niwa, our PR director, and tournament co-director Rafael Consing of the NCBL for helping put Asian American basketball on the map.
Big Pre-Game To-Do's for Teams
AUGUST 17, 2005 -- Each and every team captain must oversee the following:
(1) ONLINE WAIVERS: As with all other tourneys and leagues, Dream League cannot be held liable for any injuries sustained at our venues and all players must submit a waiver of liability before stepping onto the court. Click on ONLINE WAIVER from the left-hand navigation panel. This online waiver is good for all current and future Dream League events and venues. If you have already submitted an online waiver in the past, you need only resubmit if you changed your name, address, or phone number. We ask that team captains submit their players' information for all players who do not have access to the Internet. We will be keeping track of all online waivers submitted. Please remember to state your team name when submitting!
(2) PAPER WAIVERS NOT RECOMMENDED: Players who fail to submit an online waiver before tipoff will be required to fill out a paper waiver at the gym. This always takes longer than an online waiver and we will not be stopping the warm-up time or pushing back tipoff times for you to finish filling out that form. Team captains are asked to supervise the submission of waivers, preferrably online. Thank you for your cooperation.
(3) MANDATORY TEAM MEETING: Each team is required to have two team representatives, preferrably the captain and a backup captain, present at our registration meeting at...
The Brenden Theaters at the Palms 4321 West Flamingo Road Las Vegas, NV 89103 9:30AM sharp on Saturday, August 20, 2005 We will then have a free screening of Year of the Yao. Your friends, family, and teammates are free to join us. The movie will be followed by a Q&A panel with the film's producer. Then at 1pm, the first tipoffs will occur at Tarkanian Basketball Academy. Other games start at 2pm at 2 other gyms and 3pm at the 4th venue.
(4) FULL COMPLIANCE OF OUR RULES: See our new list of rules.

| Tournament Schedule
AUGUST 17, 2005 -- As of this writing, the schedule for Saturday has been posted, but we admit that our schedule grid below is very hard to read since it is designed more for a league than a tournament.
Therefore, captains are advised to check your team's schedule by clicking on your team name below and ensuring that your team has 2 games on Saturday and that there are no typos. These team links are also accessible on the STANDINGS/TEAMS page, but again are hard to read since, likewise, the standings are designed more for a league than a tournament.
Please note that the schedule is "set in stone" and may take a minor miracle to change at this point. If you read this website before 8/17 at 8:00AM, the schedule may have changed slightly, as noted below.
NOTES: - No excuses for schedules not read correctly. - Schedules not necessarily in chronological order. - Schedule grids ordered by gym first, then time. - "TBA" stands for Tarkanian Basketball Academy. - Do not confuse Dula Gym w/ Doolittle Comm. Ctr. - Doolittle Aux Gym is the one with the glass wall. - Tipoffs on Sat from 1pm-10pm. Sun from 10a-7pm. - Schedule updated as of 8/17 8:00AM with two small changes. - Las Vegas Aces (Masters) requested no back-to-backs -- done. - Average Joes requested later game after 2pm -- done. - Schedule for Sunday will be posted shortly. - Championships at 6pm and 7pm on Sunday. - Schedule took 8 hours to complete, very complex. - Many teams playing multiple divisions. - No more gym space available -- format must stay as is. - Potential back-to-back on Sun (maybe): MBBQ + LV Shakers. - During playoffs, players on multiple teams must choose. - Mathematically impossible to accommodate during playoffs. - Some captains getting discounts for providing a scorekeeper. - Call us at 415-377-7722 for scorekeeping discounts.
UPPER DIVISION (OPEN): 15 teams. 5 pools of 3 teams each for 2 games on Sat. Then on Sun, all teams are seeded in a 15-team single-elimination bracket (#1 gets a first-round bye). Players playing in other divisions are subject to schedule conflicts once the brackets start; such players will need to choose which team to play on. UNDER 6-FOOT DIVISION: 24 teams. 6 pools of 4 teams each for 2 games on Sat and 1 game on Sun morning. Then on Sun midday to evening, the top 8 teams are seeded by (1) W-L record, (2) biggest point differential, (3) biggest point differential of teams beaten, (4) lowest point differential of teams lost to, (5) coin flip. Single-elimination for top 8 bracket. Players playing in other divisions are subject to schedule conflicts once the brackets start; such players will need to choose which team to play on. MASTERS OVER-35 DIVISION: 8 teams. 2 pools of 4 teams each for 2 games on Sat, 1 game on Sun morning. Then on Sun midday to evening, the top 4 teams are seeded by (1) W-L record, (2) biggest point differential, (3) biggest point differential of teams beaten, (4) lowest point differential of teams lost to, (5) coin flip. Single-elimination for Final Four bracket. Players playing in other divisions are subject to schedule conflicts once the brackets start; such players will need to choose which team to play on. |

COMMISSIONER'S MESSAGE
AUGUST 16, 2005 -- Here are some urgent issues:
(1) The schedule is now up as of 5:00PM PDT Tue 8/16. Please limit complaints to only the most serious, because the schedule was very difficult to construct. If you are playing in more than one division, there is a good chance you will eventually play back-to-back in the same gym.
(2) MANDATORY TEAM MEETING: 9:30AM SAT 8/20 AT THE BRENDEN THEATERS INSIDE THE PALMS CASINO RESORT. ALSO SEE YAO FILM FOR FREE!
(3) All players must submit an ONLINE WAIVER unless you have done so already in a past Dream League season or tournament or unless your phone or address has changed since last submittal.
(4) All players must be of at least 25% Asian descent. Any player that is not obviously of at least 25% Asian descent must bring a birth certificate in case of protests. Any player in the 6-Foot division not obviously under 6'0" without shoes will be measured. Keep it simple, otherwise teams that put tournament directors in a precarious situation will not be allowed any excuses. All decisions made by tournament directors are final.
(5) Memorize and disseminate our pro-style rules (right col.), esp. to fans. Please, no spectators who are unfamiliar with our rules yelling at score- keepers from the stands. It ruins our concentration and we are more liable to make mistakes at that point. Have your team captain and your team captain only talk to a ref and a ref only for scoreboard corrections.
(6) Here's recap of recent developments:
- ___ TV to cover Open championship game - AsianWeek to run a feature on the tournament - Some games to be held at Tarkanian Academy - Christopher Chen signs on to do Yao Q&A panel - AZN-TV presenting sponsor of Year of the Yao - Final list of teams (right column)

Dream League is known as the players' league and the Sin City Shootout will definitely be the players' tournament of tournaments...

| OVERVIEW OF TOURNEY (cont.'d)
PRO-STYLE RULES: The pro-style rules we use include a 24-second shotclock, 6 personal fouls, 8 seconds to cross halfcourt, double-bonus on the 5th team foul in the quarter or 2nd team foul in the last 2:00 of the game, advance ball to halfcourt on timeouts, stopped clock on all made baskets and whistles in the last 2:00 of the game, jump ball on held balls, and more (please read up). To stay within the 1-hour limitations of gym rentals, we employ 9:00 quarters with the clock running until 7:00, then the clock stops during 1) free throws, 2) jump balls, and 3) the last 0:10 of the quarter on whistle and made basket, as well as 3 thirty-second timeouts per game (carries over each quarter), plus 1 each overtime. First OT is 2:00, second is 1:00, third is sudden death.
OTHER NOTES: Unfortunately, the schedule covering 3 divisions and a minimum of 6 simultaneous courts is too complicated to allow for a 3-Point Shoot. Check out our Elite Vegas Tourney from April 2005 and the Summer 2004 Vegas hype! LOGISTICS: AIRFARE/HOTEL/CAR
AIRFARE: It is advised that you check online travel sites and aggregators such as www.kayak.com to find out approximate airfare to and from Las Vegas (airport code: LAS).
As of 7/26, airfare from SFO ranges between $184-224, depending on when you can travel. Please note that some gyms do not open until 12pm on Sat 8/20, so you could take an early Saturday morning flight, which might be slightly cheaper.
Please expect the championship games on Sunday to end at around 5pm.
HOTELS: Some good rates found recently on Travelot. Also, check out www.ratestogo.com.
As of 6/9/05 Lowest rate off-Strip on www.ual.com: $30/nt, Gold Spike Lowest rate on Strip on www.ual.com: $79/nt, Riviera
RENTAL CARS: You will need a car to get to the nearby gyms (cabs cost too much). Because of the fast/free shuttle and assigned parked cars waiting for you on their lot, we recommend booking with Hertz. Use AmericaWest's partner code of CDP 1450445 or United's CDP 62455 (you may need to have a frequent flyer number for each, which is free to get, just visit the respective airline's website).
As of 6/9/05 Economy rate (2 days): $54.25 Economy divided by 4 players: $13.56/player
Mini-van rate (2 days): $127.84 Mini-van divided by 7 players: $18.26/player
