Division-by-division notes (for 11/1) thus far
THU 10/29 (8:15PM) -- Done with REC-, which means I'm done with 'em all! Check Bird's Eye from now on... (7:00PM) -- Fanagled REC+, see below... (6:30PM) -- Finished REC+. One more to go... (6:15PM) -- Finished 6FT-SJ... (5:15PM) -- Finished A/R-SJ... Oops looks like I skipped 6FT-SJ, will do that after A/R-SJ... Finished A/R-OSF. Up next: A/R-SJ, then both RECs... (12:30PM) -- Read the division-by-division updates below. Still looks like they're aiming to have the Bridge open by today, which means it should more than likely be ready to go by Sunday. I'll take that into consideration if we have SF vs OAK games... WED 10/28 (4:00PM) -- Good news, KCBS just had an interview with the Bay Bridge repair contractor, who said that they expect to have completion of the work done by tomorrow noon. That means I probably do not need to schedule the SF vs OAK games in RWC, as previously stated below.
THU 10/29 (2:15PM) -- Remaining: A/R-all and REC+ and REC-, but I'm realizing A/R is pretty complicated and I might skip it (see below)... Done with AAA-SJ... Done with AAA-OAK... I'm done from NL down thru 6FT-OSF, but I had to skip AAA-OAK because we still have not identified that one team to play 6 games instead of 7... WED 10/28 (2:15PM) -- As I'm building the season schedule templates off the Rumor Mill tables (which have not been updated, so all we got is the latest Core Dump below from Tue morning), here's what I've observed. Btw, assume that I've found a way to separate Oakland from SF due to the Bay Bridge issue, unless otherwise noted...
- N.L. (merged with AL-O): EBC has declared OAK homecourt, Catz always stay home as the Peninsula team, Game Time will probably take its turn to visit Catz on 11/1. My hope is to put Catz/GmTm at San Bruno, with Burlingame, then Sequoia as a backup.
- A.L. (merged with AAA-O): There's 3 OAK teams and 5 SF teams. Every week, there's one matchup of SF at OAK (since there's fewer OAK teams, we go with OAK homecourt now, then in playoffs, odds are there'll be more SF teams alive and that's when SF homecourts catchup). This week, it looks like it will be Shlamazel. Due to the Bay Bridge, I will probably put this game at Sequoia in RWC. I don't know of another solution unless we postpone one OAK and one SF team to another weekend. If any team is just dying to take a bye on 11/1, let me know asap but realize that there aren't that many options left as a makeup date, and a doubleheader is certainly a possible solution to catchup.
- AAA-E/V: I've assumed that Unleashed is in, so I went ahead with the 9-team schedule. Just remember that one team has to take a bye every week and Unleashed officially gets pegged for the bye on 10/25, so it's not them this Sun 11/1.
I cannot proceed with the season schedule for this division because the new 9th team has not paid. Therefore I don't really know if we have 8 teams or 9 teams. What I can say is, the Golden Ballaz are the only OAK team and under normal circumstances, it'd be easy to just have the great majority of SF teams take turns and visit them in OAK. However, with the Bay Bridge, we may need to force Golden Ballaz to travel to Sequoia in RWC and meet one of the Peninsula teams.
- AAA-OAK: I've identified the odd team out (6 regular season games only) to be Beast. As luck would have it, I've got The Usual Suspects pegged for a bye this Sun 11/1. Is that the only thing that can stop this championship contender?! I admit, I put them against Colossal on purpose last week, after watching Colossal the week before. Anyways, this is not set in stone right now (TUS bye 11/1).
- AAA-SFP: Done with season schedule. Most fun division to work on. I hope I didn't just jinx myself. Please note, there are 12 teams, so everyone plays every week. Then when we hit playoffs, we have a bigger bracket than usual and when you have that, you have the opportunity to have an interesting journey, i.e., it will be one heckuva marathon season for those of you who don't get bounced early. So we need to pack things in and get the regular season done right straight through, no byes.
- AAA-SJ/E/O: Go Getters and 10Guys1Ball started early, so I'm asking them when they want to have their bye later in the regular season. I also suggested that we go with all teams getting double-elim status for playoffs but having 6 regular season games instead of 7. I just think that the playoffs are what Dream League is all about and that after the round-robin of 5 games, we can repeat one more based on standings, but having another regular season game that repeats feels like borderline-overkill. Why not just jump in the playoffs and give everybody that double-elim status? Well, it's for debate and I don't think it will affect 11/1 either way. I have all 6 teams playing on 11/1.
- 6FT-OSF: 4 OAK teams, 5 SF. One of the SF teams, Bay Area Ballers, has volunteered to not only take a bye on 11/1, but also get cut to 6 regular season games in return for a pro-rated refund. This is because there are an odd number of teams, so not everyone can actually play 7 regular season games, mathematically. Incidentally, the SF Warriors 6FT "claimed" 11/15 as their turn for a bye. Every week, one team takes a bye. Finally, for 11/1, I have the SF Warriors penciled in for the weekly trip to the Peninsula to face Octavious. More on Octavious later (i.e., in the regular season, everyone visits Octavious, then it will balance out in the playoffs).
- 6FT-SJ: 13 teams, which means one sits every week. Chris Yang's Team asked for a bye on 11/1 so we'll give it to them. Everyone else is playing.
- A/R-OSF: Every week, one OAK team will have a bye. Right now I have Dream Crushers A/R penciled in for the bye on 11/1.
- A/R-SJ: 5 teams. Since 12/20 is so hard to schedule that cross-divisional with A/R-OAK, I think I will only take one A/R-OAK and one A/R-SJ team, most likely the first place teams or at least the highest-ranking teams that can play at 12pm that day and match them up as the only cross-divisional game. Everything else will be an intra-conference repeat based on standings (to be discussed later in greater detail). With 5 teams, this also means that during the first round-robin, one team will always sit. Last Sun 10/25 it was Rhino. Yeah Man request 11/15 and Burn It requested 11/22. That leaves just Greg Oden's Beard and SJ Jollybee to take the bye on 11/1, and right now I have Greg Oden's Beard penciled in for that. This will all make more sense when I go into further detail as the Rumor Mill core dump gets finalized and partitioned off, division by division, with explanations.
- REC(+): With Cereal and Wolfpack getting off to any early start, I managed to juggle a double-switch that allowed Reckless I-Ballin to take a bye this Sun 11/1, but the Cereal Killers will also take a bye on 11/1. Any team that draws the Wolverines for a matchup will need to travel to SF for that game. For this Sun 11/1, I have my fingers crossed that the Bridge will be fixed.
We have a tightly-packed schedule with 10 teams, so there are no byes to be afforded. Everyone plays on 11/1.
- REC(-): 10 OAK teams and 2 SF teams. I managed to pull a rabbit and give Dunjoz a bye on 11/1 thanks to a double-switch with Starting 7 vs Pac-Man starting early on 10/18, however, Dunjoz will need to play a doubleheader to catchup. Usually it's easy, we just have the OAK teams take turns visiting the scant SF teams, however, with the Bay Bridge closure, we may have no choice but to put the two games against the SF teams at Sequoia in RWC (or force both teams to take a bye). We'll see.
Keep checking for updates to the above division-by-division roadmap construction.
New core dump posted, scroll down
TUE 10/27 (8:30AM) -- Scroll down for the latest and greatest Core Dump. My goal is to also talk about each division before I start doing the season schedule templates. Not sure that I will be able this week to break the Rumor Mill out to its respective divisions as if you scrolled way down below the Core Dump. So you'll have to deal with the Core Dump til further notice.
Please check your payment status and tipoff timeframe, among other things to doublecheck for.
Assume you are playing 10/25, you can email me now again
THU 10/22 (10:30AM) -- AAA-O City Select just joined. Core Dump updated... (12:30AM) -- Latest and greatest Core Dump below, scroll down. I will now start verifying tipoff timeframes, checking emails for special requests and byes, then finally start laying out the schedule... WED 10/21 (2:15PM) -- Friggin finally! I'm done updating the payment statuses. See new Core Dump below. I'm not sure that I have enough time to setup the new Special Request form, so if you have a special request for this Sunday, please email me. As previously discussed, special requests will probably cost $5 each, via Google Checkout email invoices.
I still need to break out the Core Dump into their respective divisions, which will replace what's below the Core Dump right now. I'm not sure if I'll get to that until early next week, since we're flying by the seat of our pants and I need to chase down a few last teams. Please read the previous posts where I talk about whether or not you'll be playing this Sun 10/25 and how, if you are indeed matched up for 10/25, it will be a somewhat random process. Also, some preliminary explanation on the divisions was posted yesterday, below. Scroll past that to reach the update Core Dump.
As far as when the schedule will get posted, first of all it will be posted on the Bird's Eye page since that's the official weekly schedule page of all games in all gyms. Secondly, as explained on the Scheduling FAQ (link above), every week I need Mon thru Wed to sort out moving variables ranging from missing payments to your special requests to gym fluctuations, then my goal is Thursday morning to post it. Again, refer to the Bird's Eye for scheduling updates.
TUE 10/20 (7:45PM) -- Just realized I left new team Slow Motion off the AAA-SFP list. Sorry!... (7:30PM) -- Tuesdays are tough for me because I have to shuttle family members around to school, so I still haven't gotten around to updating every team's payment status per Dream League's Google Checkout account. I'll get to that late, late tonight and hopefully have it all updated tomorrow morning. I also spent all day on the phone trying to get more teams in various divisions where it would be nice to have another team or two.
Here are some divisions which I think I will merge, going down the Rumor Mill core dump:
- 6FT-OAK and 6FT-SFP. This means that (probably) five of the seven regular season games will be at your homecourt, then the 6th and 7th regular season games will be against the opposite conference/geography and also based on standings, which is a special (hopefully, cool) feature of dreamleague we always have. That means your 6th or 7th game is away in SF or OAK. Looks like all the 6FT-SFP teams are based in SF, so it really should be called "6FT-SF" (no "P" for Peninsula) and that's good because we don't have to worry about teams from down the Peninsula driving too far to Oakland. To have more teams in 6FT, I asked two AAA-SFP teams that were all under 6'0" without shoes, but they both decided to stay in the gigantic division AAA-SFP just because of the potential to travel to OAK. Kind of goes against the grain of the dreamleague way, which emulates the NBA in that you must learn how to win on the road, but whatever.
- A/R-OAK and A/R-SF. FYI, there's no Peninsula teams from A/R-SF, luckily. There's only four teams in A/R-SF, so that's why we have to do this. Also FYI, we'll have like 12 teams in the playoffs, which means the playoffs can be brutal, but if you survive it, it can also be very fun, but probably only if you secure double-elim status with a winning record.
- A/R-SJ and maybe A/R-OAK. I'm hoping to add one more A/R-SJ team of free agents headed up by SJ commish and super-scorekeeper Mark Sapinoso, but whether we do or not, I'm toying with the idea of renting a gym in Newark or Fremont (sort of the midpoint between IJRC gym in OAK and JLHS gym in SJ) and have A/R-OAK teams play against A/R-SJ teams. This would just to make the regular season more interesting. I don't think it will be possible to do this in the playoffs. Also, it's very hard to find a gym in that area. If anybody has any leads to schools or gyms in Newark/Fremont/Union City, please email me asap!
- AAA-E stays by itself? Looks like I got 6 teams in the AAA-E. Seven if defending champs Golden Ballaz come back. I might leave that alone, but we have to do something with AL and I will probably merge AL with AAA-O, see next bullet point. Also, there are two AAA-E teams who have players on AL teams, so merging these two divisions is not the best solution, therefore, I'm thinking we leave AAA-E alone.
- AAA-O and AL. The thinking here is that an AAA-O team can maybe pickup a "ringer" as needed to ante up to the AL. Honestly, the three AL (all-Asian, no non-Asians allowed) teams are pretty talented, so I put them a step above the AAA-O teams, although I haven't seen two of the AAA-O teams yet. I think the only team that would object to this is the Good Sires, because of their nice playoff run in AAA-E last season (and maybe the season before that, I can't remember) whereby they lost to the Golden Ballaz and probably want another shot at them. Oh well, maybe when things go back to normal (2010, I hope!). Does this mean an AL team can pickup a non-Asian? I don't know yet. It's something we need to discuss should the issue come up. If you're an AL team and you want to add a non-Asian, please email me out of courtesy to the Commish as well as your fellow opponents.
- AL-O and NL. This parallels the merger of AAA-O and AL. The Yay got depleted due to other leagues and issues, so that takes a chunk out of the NL. The solution is to merge with AL-O and I think that will not only be good competitively, but also more interesting for the NL teams. I'm not sure that the NL (all-Asian, no non-Asians allowed) is that much a step above the AL-O, but the NL teams certainly have a bit more chemistry whereas the AL-O teams tend to just be more athletic. If there are any teams out there who have players in both AL-O and NL, let me know because that would present a big complication. Finally, I'm thinking that it's okay for an NL team to pickup a non-Asian, if they really want to.
- REC-OAK and REC-SF. This parallels the merger of A/R-SF and A/R-OAK. There's only three REC-SF teams, so we must merge and I'll make it so that (probably) everyone plays 6 of 7 games at home.
Here are some popular email topics I got:
- To request a special tipoff timeframe different than your season timeframe (see Rumor Mill column "Tipoffs" in tables below), just email me for now but remember that I'm charging $5 per request because in season's past, it was just really overwhelming and stressful. It was a primary factor in my weekly pissiness too!
- To request a bye, well, we're not supposed to have byes and it's been that way for the past two seasons, but first off, if your division has an odd number teams, then usually it's no sweat off my back to juggle it around so that your division's block of games has you that week as the odd team out/sitting. If it takes more work to make your bye happen and you just absolutely need to have a bye for whatever reason, then I will charge $8. Please note, 11/29 is Thanksgiving holiday so that's an automatic bye everyone will take.
Again, for this Sun 10/25, as posted earlier below, assume you are playing but if you see that your division has an odd number of teams, then someone's gonna have to sit.

DIVISION BREAKDOWNS: For the new teams, to summarize, dreamleague's divisions use old-school baseball terminology and maybe a little hybrid of soccer terminology. We have the National League (NL), the American League (AL), and AAA. We don't use baseball's terminology past or lower than AAA because there would be confusion with the long-standing California Japanese League (NAU) basketball terminology, in which their highest division has traditionally been called "AA" -- where in baseball, AA is nowhere near the top and is the step lower than AAA. We put our Recreational (aka "REC") or "somewhat-non-competitive" division below AAA. Back up top, we call the top division "NL" because of the old-school baseball terminology of it being the "Senior Circuit", which alludes to having more veterans and experience, whereas the AL has more of the "upstarts" and was once called the "Junior Circuit". Obviously in our modern era of Major League Baseball, this is no longer the case with NL and AL. Finally, sometimes we will subdivide a division into "Elite" then "Premier" status, which borrows from soccer terminology. Our "6FT" and "Veterans" divisions are officially placed under the AAA heading. 6FT may even be considered its own division, although the 6FT division in our National Tournaments can turn out to be of really high caliber perhaps overlapping with AL. In 2008, we started to further subdivide divisions into geography and sometimes that changed the name of some divisions: 6FT Oakland became "6-OAK" and sort of lost its connection to "AAA-6FT", AAA-Premier San Francisco and San Jose which would have been known as "AAA-Premier SF/SJ" lost its "-P" and morphed into "AAA-SFJ", and a division in between AAA and REC became "AAA-REC Oakland" which was cut short to "A/R-OAK". This all becomes evident as you scroll through the various divisions below.

National League (NL)
For Asian American divisions, this is the top level in terms of speed, talent, experience (hence the reference to the baseball terminology for the National League's "Senior Circuit" as compared to the American League's "Junior Circuit" -- monikers which ironically no longer apply to today's MLB), and teamwork. No height restrictions. Each team typically has at least two players 6'2" or taller, but teamwork, chemistry and talent play a bigger role than height.
For the 2009-10 Fall-Winter season, we will offer non-Asians an opportunity to play in the AL-Open division.
No "impact" player in N.L. may play in AAA-REC or REC.

QUICK TAKE: (10/13) Too early to report. Worst-case scenario: combine with AL-O and maybe A.L., then re-split-up for playoffs (?).
American League Open (AL-Open)
The competitive level in AL-Open ranges from AL-Elite to AL-Premier (read each of those sections below and please note as explained below: today's "AL-E" is yesterday's "AL-P"). Also note that if your team has NL-caliber competitiveness, by all means you should be in the NL, not the AL-Open.
The key difference here between AL-O and the rest of the AL stems from our historical issues dealing with players (on AL teams and below) who may or may not have documented proof of being of Asian descent. AL-Open is our solution to this. If any team has any undocumented or otherwise unverifiable players, they are put in this division.
For this upcoming season, any number of non-Asians are allowed per team in this division. The previous rule restricted the number to two. We will see how the 2009-10 Fall-Winter season goes and make any necessary adjustments in 2010.
No "impact" player in AL-Open may play in AAA-REC or REC.

American League Elite (AL-Elite)
NEW AS OF 2008 SUMMER-FALL: Due to the logistical numbers, the "new" AL-E has been combined with the "new" AL-P to form one AL division. The description for the old AL-P is a more accurate description of the new AL. Therefore, we have crossed out the description below for AL-E.
OLD DESCRIPTION OF AL-ELITE: Almost as fast and talented as NL, but generally smaller players and not as refined experience and teamwork. Usually AL-Elite teams have two players on the court that can post up. Most players are 6'2" or under and typically if the team is a bit smaller, it has extraordinary chemistry to compensate for the lack of height. No more than two players over 6'2" are allowed on the floor at anytime, otherwise you'd probably be a better fit in NL. No more than 3 NL players that are in the top 7 in scoring on any NL team are allowed on the same team, otherwise it would just be a remix of an existing NL team.
American League (AL)
NEW AS OF 2008 SUMMER-FALL: The new AL is a combination of the "new" AL-E and "new" AL-P, considering we have the new AL-Open division explained above as well. Please read the updated comments below the table, which will be posted in due time to explain everything. The description of this division is borrowed from the "old" AL-P description, as alluded to in the above "old" AL-E description.
The A.L. is an Asian-only division.
Almost like AL-Elite except AL-Premier AL teams generally have one post up player on the floor as opposed to two. Height is similar to AL-Elite, but AL-Elite speed and talent is slightly higher. Still no more than two over 6'2" on the floor anytime allowed. Except for special circumstances, most new teams first enter Dream League at no higher than AL-Premier AL. 4 out of 5 starters in AL-Premier AL and probably could have started on their high school varsity teams.
No "impact" player in A.L. may play in AAA-REC or REC.

AAA-Open (AAA-O)
The competitive level in AAA-Open ranges from AAA-Elite to AAA-Premier (read each of those sections below). Also note that if your team has AL-caliber competitiveness or higher, by all means you should be in the AL or higher, not the AAA-Open.
The key difference here between AAA-O and the rest of the AAA stems from our historical issues dealing with players (on AAA teams and below) who may or may not have documented proof of being of Asian descent. AAA-Open is our solution to this. If any team has any undocumented or otherwise unverifiable players, they are put in this division.

*** FOR 2009-10 FALL/WINTER, WE ANTICIPATE THAT AAA-OPEN WILL BE COMBINED WITH AAA-ELITE, SEE AAA-ELITE ***
AAA-Elite (AAA-E)
NOTES FOR 2009 WINTER-SPRING: (1/2) Right now, my intention is to move up the "elite" teams of last season's AAA-P (AAA-OAK and AAA-SFJ) to fill out the AAA-Elite. There is also the issue of having enough AAA-Open teams. If the numbers are not there and depending on the teams that signup for AAA-Open, I may either move AAA-Open teams to AAA-E or AL-Open or those teams will just have to sit it out. Also, last season we merged AAA-V with AAA-E and we may need to do so again this season. For now, they are split so check the AAA-V section.
The biggest difference between AAA-Elite and AAA-Premier is that at least two of the starters in AAA-Elite probably did or could have played on their high school varsity team, or at least most of the players have experience playing in organized leagues. AAA restricts players to one on the court over 6'2" at anytime. Teams usually have one or two post up players who could even be 6'0" or shorter. Please note that AAA-Premier -- the one below this -- is the lowest competitive division (REC is not considered competitive) that allows players over 6'0", therefore AAA-Elite is one cut above that.
No impact player in AAA-Elite may play in the AAA-REC or REC.

QUICK TAKE: (10/13) We anticipate combining the AAA-30+, AAA-O, and AAA-E here, but if there's a team that doesn't quite fit in terms of geography, we may move those teams up to either A.L. or down to AAA.
AAA-30+ (formerly AAA-Veterans or AAA-V)
I've renamed this division to AAA-30+ to imply that all players must be 30 years old or older the average on-the-court age must be 30 years or older. This allows teams that have a bunch of guys over 30 to pickup at least one guy under 30, depending on how the numbers average out. This might be hard to police, but I think we're just encouraging the spirit of the rule. If there is a team that brings two or more really young guys, we could literally stop play and force certain guys not to play on the court at the same time, depending on their drivers licenses. If any team is going to be borderline over an average age of 30, it's best that the team take care of the math once on the court, have the scorekeeper check id's and write ages down on the scoresheet, and we'll know for future reference.
We have renamed this division because even when we changed the name from AAA-Slowbreak, a moniker most dreamleaguers didn't like because it sounded like the division was inferior, to AAA-Veterans, we didn't get a rush of registrations. Whether or not we need to resort to checking people's drivers licenses to see if they are really over 30, remains to be seen. Here are some intended characteristics of AAA-30:
- In theory, the AAA-P has younger (albeit less disciplined) ballhandlers that go coast-to-coast faster than in the AAA-30+. However, AAA-30+ teams tend to commit fewer turnovers than AAA-P.
- This division is the anti-thesis of the AAA-P and AAA-6FT divisions. AAA-6FT is guard-heavy, younger, in-your-face. AAA-30+ is more halfcourt, grind 'em, inside-out.
- AAA-30 teams typically would probably be forced to play a lot of zone defense if they were to remain in AAA-P or AAA-6.
If you can think of a better name than "AAA-30+", by all means suggest it to us!
No "impact" player in AAA-30+ may play in AAA-REC or REC.
*** FOR 2009-10 FALL/WINTER, WE ANTICIPATE THAT AAA-OPEN WILL BE COMBINED WITH AAA-ELITE, SEE AAA-ELITE ***
AAA-E/O (San Jose)
This is a division trapped in SJ since the teams usually don't want to go outside of SJ to play against similar caliber teams. For the time being, it is the highest division in SJ.
Please see the above information for AAA-Elite and AAA-Open.
No "impact" player in this division may play in AAA-REC or REC.
*** FOR 2009-10 FALL-WINTER, ALL AAA-O TEAMS ARE STILL CURRENTLY LISTED IN AAA-E. THIS WILL BE CHANGED SOON. ***
AAA-Premier
Only one or two starters on a AAA-Premier team did or could have played high school varsity. Lowest level for teams with at least one player over 6'0", otherwise you'd probably play in the AAA-6 unless you really wanted a challenge. AAA-P teams, in general, have only one player over 6'0", as well as one bonafide post player, unless the team has particularly strong teamwork or chemistry. Basically, AAA-P is like AAA-6 except one guy is over 6'0".
This season, we're finally at critical mass where we can split up the AAA-P by geographies. Last season, we had Oakland (AAA-OAK) and SF/SJ (AAA-SFJ). This season, the 2009 Winter-Spring season, we plan to have AAA-OAK, AAA-SFP (where "SFP" stands for SF/Peninsula), and AAA-SJ.
No "Big Three" player in the AAA may play in AAA-REC or REC.

AAA-6FT (AAA-6-Foot)
Obviously, no one on the floor can be over 6'0" (without shoes) and the assumption is that all of the teams are guard-oriented (no impact players down low). We are going to be strict about the height requirement. If you have any players questionably above 6'0", then your team should play in any of the AAA divisions other than 6-FT. Just because this is 6-FT does not mean this is an inferior AAA division. This is not the same as the REC level. This is still a competitive division.
This season, we're finally at critical mass where we can split up the AAA-6 by geographies (we probably could have done this last season). So from here on out, 6-OAK and 6-SFJ will refer to the AAA-6 level.
No "Big Three" player in 6FT may play in AAA-REC or REC.

AAA-REC
New for 2009 and onward: To be clear, AAA-REC is by invitation only. It is for teams that played last season and either struggled through the AAA-Premier division or waltzed through the REC division. While the REC prevents teams from sandbagging by not having any championship awards and limiting each regular season game to one ref, forcing new teams into the AAA-P also prevents the same and it further justifies my season-by-season stratification where the top AAA-P teams become the AAA-Elite. For some reason, teams always seem to want to avoid the AAA-Elite. Plus, I need to protect the existing AAA-REC teams. As such, new teams that have signed up for AAA-REC will be rightfully placed in the AAA-P.
Because every season the better teams in AAA-P, AAA-6, or REC turn out to be head and shoulders above the cellar dwellers in their respective divisions, we have created "AAA-REC" to represent the gray area between AAA and REC. AAA-REC has been designed for AAA teams that have been "thru the grinder". The only time we will accept new teams into this division is when it is unclear if they should be in AAA or REC, so we err on the side of caution whereby if that new team turns out too strong for REC, the seasoned veterans of AAA-REC (remember, they went thru the grinder) can possibly withstand such new "ultra" REC teams. AAA-REC can also be populated by teams that are having trouble even competing against sub-.500 teams from AAA-P and AAA-6 -- teams that typically win at most one or two games only at the AAA level.
Unlike REC, there will indeed be championship t-shirts here (and 2 refs per game) in AAA-REC. The establishment of AAA-REC also further discourages sandbagging in the REC (be it on purpose or not).
This season, we have experienced a hypergrowth of critical mass where we can split up the AAA-REC by geographies, just as we have done in the AAA-P and AAA-6. So from here on out, A/R-OAK and A/R-SFJ will refer to the AAA-REC level.
In 2009 Summer-Fall, we saw at least one player from NL be the star for a team in the AAA-REC. This was not the intention of this division, as explained above. Therefore, no "impact" player playing in AAA-Elite/Open or higher is allowed to step foot in a AAA-REC (or REC) game. No "Big Three" player, which means in the top three in scoring, from any higher division including AAA-Premier and 6FT, is allowed to play in AAA-REC (or REC). Any team in violation of this rule will be fined $25.

Recreational ("REC")
For fun only; to avoid sandbaggers, no awards will be given to the championship team here and regular season games will be handled by one upper-echelon ref only, but as of 2009-10 Fall-Winter, because we have moved to the "franchise fee" model whereby teams are responsible for paying their refs in cash on-the-spot, we will return to a two-referee format for all REC games. Teams should be groups of friends or random rec-level free agents. Picking up players specifically to help win the championship is not allowed. Mostly under 6-foot, but exemptions will be made for teams that have struggled in the AAA.
In 2009 Summer-Fall, we saw at least one player from NL be the star for a team in the REC. This was not the intention of this division, as explained above. Therefore, no "impact" player playing in AAA-Elite/Open or higher is allowed to step foot in a AAA-REC (or REC) game. QUICK TAKE: (10/13) May need to combine with REC-OAK like last season. More details on this later.
REC-SJ (REC-San Jose)
*** REC-SJ HAS BEEN MERGED WITH A/R-SJ (WHICH HAS MERGED WITH AAA-SJ), SEE AAA-SJ ***
QUICK TAKE: (1/12) If there's not enough in REC-SJ, we will merge with A/R-SJ (which may have its own merger issues).

TUE 10/20 (12:15AM) -- Alright, 10 hours later! Below is the latest and greatest Core Dump. Notice that I have not double-checked anything since the last rev for payments (many of them since last revision are listed as "tbd"), so that's my immediate next step, of course. For those of you in interesting situations such as NL/AL-O/AL, I'll be in touch soon, but we might be adding a few more teams so please do not despair. For those of you in AAA or lower and there's only a few teams listed in your area, please note that I may combine with teams from another locale, such as 6FT-SFP and 6FT-OAK. I will discuss that in greater detail after updating the payments since last revision.
You should check the new Core Dump below (scroll down past the last post) for correct placement in divisions, correct tipoff timeframes, and anything else that looks a little off. You can now email me any questions you might have pertaining to the Core Dump below.
MON 10/19 (2:15PM) -- Right now, in the interests of all of you, I really need to focus on finishing up the registration lists and matching them up with the Google Checkout payments. In the meantime, you should assume that you are playing this Sun 10/25. However, I say that with standard Dream League caveat of: "barring unforeseen circumstances". Here are potential unforeseen circumstances that may bar you from playing 10/25, even though that is my goal...
- The number of teams in your division just so happens to be an odd number, which means someone will need to not play a game each week. Usually, this is like the NFL: everyone takes a turn having a bye.
- As is the case on any given week, something might've happened to your gym which bars us from scheduling as many games as we would like.
- There may be some other payment-related anomaly or whatever else that hits us like a wrench from left field.
So please do not email or contact me unless it is absolutely urgent. At this point, the most pressing issues are making sure that your team paid and that your team is placed in the correct division. And sometimes that can get complicated because there are guys playing in multiple divisions, and of course they can't be playing on two teams from the same division. Anyways, back to work!
For new season: check each division for an idea of competition
TUE 10/13 (6:30PM) -- The following email was just sent to all captains who have paid and put either 10/11 or 10/18 as their team's start date...
WE ARE GOING TO POSTPONE THE START TO 10/25 UNLESS I HEAR BACK OTHERWISE FROM YOU, AS FOLLOWS. Please check your team's status on the first revision of the Rumor Mill page. Some of your divisions are still kind of in flux, as I try to hear back from last season's teams.
The only teams that are paid and ready to go for 10/18 are as follows...
AAA-OAK: Colossal vs Das Hoops AAA-SFP: Full Tilt vs Next Door Neighbor REC-OAK&SF: Starting7, EBAYC, Pac-Man, Cereal Killers, Wolfpack, S.Rhino, Wolverines -- an odd number of teams here
If you are in SF, we need to have a minimum of 2 games to get started, meaning S.Rhino, Wolverines, Full Tilt, and NDN will all need to agree to start this Sun 10/18 for us to start there. I am going to assume that everyone in SF is okay with pushing back to 10/25.
In Oakland, there are an odd number of REC teams ready to go, so one team would have to sit out. However, we can definitely get going if guys are really itching to play. If AAA-OAK is ready, then we would have 3 games there.
BUT... I will assume that everyone is okay with pushing things back another week. Now, if there's a team out there that really, really, really needs to play on 10/18 in order to *hope* to secure a bye later in the regular season, PLEASE SPEAK UP NOW!!!
Any other questions, let me know. TUE 10/13 (2:30PM) -- Rumor Mill first revision is now up. Just scroll down, scroll down, and scroll down and you'll see them, division by division. We have a lot of teams from last season who have not chimed in with their status. Maybe this has something to do with the new payment structure. I'll get some updates from them asap. For some divisions, we don't have enough teams paid to start on 10/18. I have emailed those captains already.
MON 10/12 (7:30PM) -- Actually, at 11am this morning I initiated the export, but it's been 8 hours later and I still don't have it. Screw it. I'm just gonna do it by hand, which is a pain. Basically, I should have a list of teams registered (and paid) soon. Remember, you can't start unless you've paid, with enough runway time ahead in advance so that I can book refs and gyms. (11:00AM) -- I just exported the latest and greatest from the REGISTRATION database as of 10:48AM, so if you entered information after that (e.g., this means you, Team Reckless I-ballin -- sorry!), it may not be captured until next Monday, assuming I forget to manually include it on the Rumor Mill. So, my plan is to have the Rumor Mill updated later today. This can sometimes take me a long time because it's a lot of Excel work, a ton of filtering and making sure data looks pretty and doesn't get lost.
SAT 10/10 (4:15PM -- Check the Bird's Eye for the $50 referral fees for new Open teams!
Core dump of Rumor Mill
MON 10/19 (12:15PM) -- As explained on the Bird's Eye, I will be spending the next 48 hours updating this page. I will first start with more core dumps, then I will finish off the work by replacing the core dump and going back to our division-by-division "capsules".
Some of you have been asking to switch divisions. To do so, the best thing to do is (1) have your captain email me and (2) goto the REGISTRATION page and resubmit with (a) your name, (b) your team name, (c) selecting or entering whatever it is that you want to change, and (d) putting a little note indicating your change in the Comments field, which is the field right above the Submit button. So then click Submit and after I get the reminder from you via email, I will go into the database and merge your record with the new information overwriting the old information. That way, we have your information still all updated and ready to go in the database. Please also try to explain briefly why you want the change to occur.
Every team should be checking back on this page to ensure that your information is correct (for now, just check the Core Dump + SUN 10/18 post below). If it is not correct, check the timestamp of the latest update and if you submitted your information after the timestamp (SUN 10/18 10:00AM in this case), then I haven't gotten to it yet. If you submitted your information before the timestamp, then your captain needs to email me to make sure I have the latest and greatest. Please note: everything here should have been submitted or resubmitted via the REGISTRATION page -- this is very important in terms of "version control".
SUN 10/18 (10:00AM) -- First off, some individuals have been paying by PayPal using last season's link from somewhere (I thought I took it off the site). We are no longer using PayPal. Please use the Google Checkout buttons on the Signup page (link above). Any PayPal payments, I will have to fully refund and consider you starting over as far as this season's payment is concerned.
About 20 more teams registered, although I haven't checked if they also paid, since the last post. Since I'm really busy running 5 games on the other side of the Bay, I probably won't be able to update these until by Monday evening. Here's an even "dumpy" core dump of these 20 or so teams, just in case you are dying to see if your team really got registered. Send me an email if you think there might be a problem...

FRI 10/16 (10:45AM) -- The following is a core dump of all the divisions. The divisions are listed in alphabetical order, so that the first division shown is 6FT-OAK and the last is REC-SFP. That means N.L. is no longer listed first, even though it is considered our highest division (although it can be argued that the AL-Open is actually higher, but that's outside the scope of this discussion).
The reason why I just did a core dump is because I'm starting to notice a flurry of registrations. It would be very difficult to keep up with it division-by-division and have to generate all these different tables. Instead, let's just go with one table until the next major division-by-division revision, which will occur after the database export on Monday morning. Since the last database export, I've just been updating this core dump table by hand. That's why some teams listed as "registered" have last season's data; I was basically copying them to the new table and just getting them on there, as opposed to actually extracting the registered data from our database.
If you want to skip this core dump table and go down to the previous revision by division, please click here. Division-by-division also details the competitive levels of each division, in case you are new to this page. Thanks for reading. Check back here for more updates.
I will continue to update the core dump below on a daily basis until the next major division-by-division revision on Monday.
THU 10/8 (2:30PM) -- Not enough teams wanted to start this Sun 10/11, so we'll push it back to 10/18 as the first start date. More info to follow shortly as I check with all of last season's captains.
TUE 10/6 (12:45PM) -- Still working on getting that Monday weekly export of registrations. For those of you looking forward to playing this Sun 10/11, please be patient and know that our Scheduling FAQ says to anticipate the schedule every Thu. Thanks.
WED 9/30 (2:30PM) -- Wow, it was exactly one week ago I first put this up! Anyhoo, teams are starting to pay and register, but one thing to remember is that our REGISTRATION database can only be mass-exported every Monday (well, once per week but I set it to Mondays) so that I can organize it in Excel. So please wait until Mon 10/5 for the first "dump" of lists of teams. I'll also try to find out which teams from last season are coming back.
Also, if you specified a start date of 10/11 or 10/18, just remember that we need enough other teams for you to play against. It is very possible that any particular division could be delayed to 10/25, or even after that if there are unforeseen circumstances like gym problems (it has probably happened before). So you just have to be patient and wait for the lists to get updated each Monday. Probably best to check back Monday nights.
WED 9/23 (2:30PM) -- Welcome to another season of Dream League. Once again, click on each division's link for an explanation of each division, and who is allowed or not allowed in that division (please note: the teams listed are from the 2009 Summer-Fall season). This season, we are enforcing the following (new) rules more closely...
- All "open" divisions are hereby entirely "open", i.e., there is no restriction on the number of non-Asian players. The only restriction on Asian ethnicity that remains is that any non-"open" division shall be considered Asian-only. Any exceptions to this rule shall be made in conjunction with the Commissioner's recommendation along with that particular division's majority vote of captains.
- No "impact" player in AAA-Elite/Open/Veterans or higher (i.e., the highest level of AAA, then also AL and, of course, NL, including the "open" versions of these divisions) may play in AAA-REC or REC.
- No one in the "Big Three" (top three scoring) for any team in AAA, which is one division higher than the hybrid AAA-REC division, or higher may play on any team in AAA-REC or REC.
- No more than 3 "impact" players from any higher division may be on the same team in a lower division.
NOTE: "Impact" shall be defined as being in the top seven in scoring on the higher division team. "Big Three" shall be defined as one of the top three scorers on a team.
Any team found in violation of the above will be subject to a $25 fine and correction of the violation. Should the correction involve moving the team to another division, doing so will incur an additional $25 change fee. If you feel that any of these rules are being violated by an opposing team, you may launch an investigation with the league, however, doing so may result in a $25 fee (see schedule of fees on Signup page).
