Scottie Reynolds of Villanova was named to the AP’s NCAA First-Team All-American earlier this week, yet he’s not highly touted on draft boards. He could be the first First-Team All-American to go undrafted in decades — congratulations to him, btw, because this award will help his draft stock. Essentially, he is a fringe draftee. However, he managed to sign one of the most powerful agents out there: Arn Tellem.
Our Asian-American community fan-favorite, Jeremy Lin, is also a fringe NBA prospect and, last I heard, was still interviewing agents. I’ll discuss this later in a separate blogpost, but unless he knocks the socks off the scouts at Portsmouth, which is entirely possible (he knocked my and others’ socks off last summer), he’ll get drafted primarily because he’s Asian-American and has a unique, niche fanbase that can potentially be cracked open for bigger and better NBA marketing opportunities, starting with ticket sales. He’s certainly a much better prospect than point guard Sun Yue was, when the Lakers drafted him a few years ago.
When you’re a fringe prospect, you need someone who can gain you some leverage. There are only 60 draft picks and there does not seem to be a priority with point guards this year, so essentially Reynolds and Jeremy are auditioning for the same scarce draft slot. Tellem probably does not need two guys that he needs to work extra hard for.
Bottom line: Reynolds signing Tellem is not good news for Jeremy Lin.
EXCERPT: “Reynolds signed a man who will do his best to help Scottie reach his dream of playing in the NBA, super-agent Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group. Arn’s list of 35 players reads like a who’s who of the league, including: Tyreke Evans, Derrick Rose, Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Russell Westbrook. One thing you’ll notice about his list is that not a lot of players were ‘long shots.’ It’s curious that Reynolds would pick such a big agent to handle him, considering he’ll need a ton of attention to reach the league.”
